Mamelodi Cash and Carry was closed two weeks ago and they quickly reopened operations. Today, we are back to ensure they never reopen again. This is an illegal structure. Our second stop was an unregistered recycling facility in Marabastad. TMPD arrested two illegal immigrants who were found working at the facility. Across the State right now, LAWMA intervention trucks are working side by side with waste compactors from our Local Government Councils and I am pleased to confirm that they are actively collecting and evacuating every bag, every pile, and every debris generated during the monthly environmental sanitation exercise. This collaboration between LAWMA and the Local Government Councils is exactly the kind of synergy we envisioned when we reinstated this exercise because waste management must be a shared responsibility from the state level right down to the grassroots. I commend the swift response of our teams on the field and I assure every Lagosian that we will not rest until the entire city is clean, cleared, and safe. This is the operational backbone of our commitment to a #CleanerLagos and a #GreaterLagos.

Despite the City of Tshwane’s newly implemented city cleansing levy being declared illegal by the courts, Tshwane has now expanded its reach by billing sectional title property owners across the city for city cleansing, even when they are utilizing the city’s waste removal services and paying for this service on their body corporate’s account. Residents of sectional title properties’ September bills include an amount of R223.53 for waste management and R447.06 for miscellaneous charges for city cleansing. All residents of sectional title properties who have received this levy on their bills must officially dispute this charge with the city. DA councillors are making an inventory of complexes with a waste management account from the city where residents are also being billed a city cleansing levy. We will submit these particulars to the city manager and the chief financial officer for the double billing to be reversed.

So, we are talking about a range of waste that is going to be separated. It's a project component with various infrastructures are going to be we started with the encapsulation,landfills ,water treatment plant and sorting plant. Now, this is the last leg of waste management, this waste handling plant. It's going to produce 16 to 22 megawatts of electricity, and it will be fed to the national grid.The work is going to commence this month. It's going to take 18 months. The final position we are going to produce electricity to fed the national grid.This is a Chinese contractor. What I can say is this is the first project in Zimbabwe and in Southern Africa. By doing so, we are putting Zimbabwe on the map in terms of proper waste management."Dr Delish Nguwaya
