The best scene, albeit tragic, was those field gunners being left and wiped out by Stuka’s. I believe the burning bodies under the truck scene was years ahead of its time too. Film critic Barry Norman’s father was the director.

One of my favourite films, set in this period, is 'Operation Amsterdam' 1959. I'm a huge fan of Peter Finch. @ReelJoBotting

“Well they’re our boats!” It’s strange that every time the boats sail down the Thames past Parliament, someone always starts chopping onions near me…

Lorries, goods trains brought some soldiers to Bar End Winchester straight from the boats en route to the main station. My mother said she made tea and sandwiches. Men soaked in sea water, fuel. All cold. All very shocked. It was first she knew something bad had happened

Always worth a watch, particularly as it was made when the event was still relatively recent for many. The more up to date version pales in comparison despite CGI, etc.

Dunkirk, Cruel Sea, Sink the Bismark - b&w classics that capture the understated approach of the british in WW2. My grandparents fought in it and didnt like the modern stuff as it was all "too emotional", they said people just got on with it.
