The Online Safety Act has had a chilling effect on free speech. It has been made worse by the fact that two vital free speech protections have still not been implemented — even though the Act became law three years ago. More than 50 peers — including three former Cabinet Ministers — have signed a letter from the Free Speech Union’s General Secretary, Lord Young, to the Technology Secretary, Liz Kendall, calling on her to implement these protections. The concern centres on duties in the Act to protect journalistic content and content of democratic importance which have not yet been commenced. Legitimate and lawful social media posts have already been censored — most concerningly, a speech on the grooming gangs scandal by Conservative MP and Shadow Home Office Minister Katie Lam. Even spiked’s documentary on online censorship was censored on X. It’s time for Liz Kendall to instruct Ofcom to get on with protecting free speech. Google is the latest US tech company to warn about the threat the Online Safety Act poses to free speech. The Free Speech Union long warned the government about the dangers the Act would pose to UK citizens — and those overseas. No one can seriously claim there is a political or ideological motive behind Google raising concerns about censorship. The Free Speech Union has said that, should Heather Herbert join the Free Speech Union, we would do our best to help him. Heather Herbert posted a vile and deeply offensive statement on the social media platform BlueSky about the tragic murder of Ann Widdecombe. The University of Aberdeen employee has now been arrested and charged over his offensive comments. While the Free Speech Union does not support Heather’s offensive comments about Ann — a dear late friend of the FSU — it is not an offence, no matter how offensive, to speak ill of the dead. Ann was a staunch defender of our fundamental right to free speech, and we very much doubt she would have supported Police Scotland’s actions. Police Scotland has a poor record when it comes to recognising citizens’ rights to free speech. If Heather has been charged with a speech offence, the Free Speech Union is here to help. Samiksha Bhattacharjee (Samiksha's State of the Debate) is a first-year student and President of the University College London Libertarian Society — a group that stands for free markets, free minds and free speech. But when Samiksha invited FSU External Affairs Officer Connie Shaw to speak on free speech and women’s rights, all hell broke loose. A petition sought to pressure the student union into cancelling the event (which would likely have been unlawful under the Higher Education (Freedom of Speech) Act), and a protest was organised to “resist Connie Shaw”. On the day, Connie required close protection, with the Met Police and campus security present to ensure the event could go ahead safely, as a mob of students protested outside — and disrupted proceedings inside. Samiksha became the “most hated” student on campus for daring to host the event. While the student union could not cancel it, it did issue an apology to the trans and non-binary community for Connie’s “objectionable” views. When the Government says it is banning something to ‘protect’ people, more often than not it is not about safety but about clamping down on free speech. FSU External Affairs Officer Connie Shaw was on Talk to discuss the Government’s new draft Bill to ban conversion practices and the chilling effect it could have on free speech — particularly on conversations between parents and gender-confused children. You can easily imagine a situation in which a vulnerable child, having been radicalised into believing their parents are evil for not affirming their gender identity, reports them to the police. Even the threat of being reported could deter parents from having well-intentioned conversations with their children for fear of prosecution. Being rich is not FU MONEY. (sorry for the low volume. there are critters around me) There are many people in this space who are "rich". But they are not free. If you ask a lot of people "What does it mean to be free?" you get 3 core principles. "Being free means to do what I want, when I want, and with whom I want." 1. To do "what you want" you have to know yourself and what makes you happy and fulfilled. To have purpose. 2. "When I want" means time. This is you most precious gift, pleb. I see my last block out there on the horizon being mined. Don't waste time. Understand when you have enough, and get on with your life. 3. "With whom I want" means you need to cultivate deep friendships NOW so that at the end of your life people remember you as someone they admired and loved. There are people in this Bitcoin space who will never have enough things, or enough Bitcoin. They will stand in front of you at a Bitcoin conference and never engage with you while "working the room" with their eyes. You can have FU MONEY sooner than you think. Think quietly on the above and realize it is not a number. It's what is between your ears and in your heart.

Calling for death and murder does not fall under die ambit of freedom of speech. Freedom of speech does not imply that speech cannot have consequences. Calling for people to be cancelled because they say things you disagree with, but then claiming to be an advocate for free speech when you incite murder is two-faced dishonesty. Employers have a right to know if their employees encourage racial extermination and murder on social media. We desperately need freedom of speech. We also need certain rules to maintain it.

The UAE decision to exit OPEC has been long in the making. The UAE has been quite open about its focus on holistic energy solutions. It also speaks to the UAE worldview and attitudes toward multilateralism which has been under strain in the past few years. The Gulf states agree on a prosperous region but diverge on the means to achieving it, and this is playing out in oil policy. The UAE exit does not preclude its cooperation with OPEC.

Like in a bank robbery case you have to rob – it has to be a financial institution, you have to show intent," said former prosecutor Andrew McCarthy. "Those are the things the jury has to agree on unanimously that they were proved beyond a reasonable doubt. Here what we’re doing is taking the element that actually makes this a felony, because remember falsification of records is normally a misdemeanor in New York. What makes it a felony is that you are concealing or committing another crime." Free Speech Is Now a Government Privilege in the UK As of midnight, the UK’s Online Safety Act is live — and with it, your right to free speech is officially on life support. Forget “protecting children.” This is the West’s biggest censorship machine yet. And yet there he is being grilled on what the hell is going on with this war and its costs. So I think the Iranian calculation would be we can sustain this longer than them. And that has been an accurate calculation until now. James argues that the Bill will criminalise parents who refuse to affirm their gender-confused child’s decision to embark on an irreversible medical pathway. He says they could be reported to the police or their local council, hauled before a judge and, in effect, made subject to a restraining order.
