As the SPVM works to identify and find the individual, we call for all potential motives behind this act targeting an Islamic centre to be thoroughly examined, including the possibility of a hate-motivated act. The son of a Muslim couple targeted in a racist and Islamophobic attack in Sunderland has spoken out about the incident, saying the man responsible has been arrested and released on bail. Aaryan Amin, who posted a video on TikTok explaining what happened to his parents, said the attack left his family shaken. Northumbria Police confirmed that a 44-year-old man was arrested on August 1 in connection with the incident.

On the morning of October 22nd, 2023, a man approached the front of a prominent mosque and Islamic centre in Ottawa. Then, in full view of the surveillance camera, he proceeded to commit a disgusting act of vandalism using a plastic bag and feces. This utterly appalling incident is another reminder of the extreme spike in Islamophobic acts reported across Canada in the past two weeks. NCCM has received an over 1300% spike in such reports. This is utterly unacceptable. Our leaders must come together to formulate a real plan to stem this tide. We are in touch with leaders at the mosque, Ottawa Police Services, and all parties on the ground to ensure this incident is appropriately investigated from all angles. We will provide updates.

We are aware of an incident inside a school in Ontario’s Halton region where a student was labelled a “terrorist” for wearing the keffiyah scarf. It is utterly appalling and completely unacceptable for this kind of anti-Palestinian racism to exist in our schools, let alone to children. Teachers and administrators are supposed to protect students from this kind of racism, not enable or produce it. We salute the courage of this young man in standing up against racism. Let’s be clear: this teacher has no place in the classroom. We are in touch with those involved, as well as local advocates like @MACCMuslim, to push for change. We will have more updates as the situations evolves.

Yesterday, an area of the Baitul Mukarram Mosque building in Montreal, QC was lit on fire. The damage is extremely extensive and destructive, but thankfully no one has been hurt. Authorities have been alerted to the incident and are investigating what happened as a possible arson attack, along with possible hate motivations. We strongly urge the public wait for full facts to be confirmed and to refrain from speculations. We are on the ground and in touch with all parties, including authourities. We will have more to say as the situation evolves.

We visited the scene of the explosion which occurred at about 7.44 pm yesterday, 16 January 2024 in Bodija, Ibadan. This unfortunate incident resulted in death and injury to residents in the vicinity and also affected properties. We have already deployed first responders and all relevant agencies within Oyo State to carry out comprehensive search and rescue operations. These operations will continue throughout the night. Earth moving equipment, ambulances, emergency lights, and security were deployed to the scene of the incident. The wounded and injured are being treated and moved to public and private hospitals within Ibadan. Medical personnel are on standby at these hospitals to provide all needed assistance to the injured. We have visited UCH to see some of those injured during the incident. In total, we have 77 injured victims so far, most of whom were treated and discharged and 2 fatalities. May their souls rest in peace and may God give their loved ones the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss. I have directed that the medical bills of all victims be covered by the government. We will also be providing temporary accommodation for those whose houses were affected and ensuring that they are supported to rebuild their lives. Preliminary investigations by the security agencies revealed that illegal miners occupying one of the houses in Bodija had stored explosive devices there which caused the blast. The investigations are ongoing. All those found culpable for this will be brought to book. I urge all residents to please call 615 for any emergencies they may be experiencing at this time and to remain calm and stay away from the immediate scene of the incident to allow rescue operations to be carried out without interference. We are grateful to the first responders, security personnel and all those who are at the scene to assist with the rescue operations as well as the medical personnel taking care of the injured. Please say a prayer for those who have been affected by this disaster as we continue with the rescue operations.

The fact that the mosque is carrying on with its weekend food drive for the general public as usual is a testament to this house of worship and the positive role it plays in supporting its neighbors of all faiths. We commend local law enforcement for working with the community to keep the community safe. We encourage all elected officials to condemn the anti-Muslim extremism that Greg Abbott, Ken Paxton and others have fomented. We urge all community members to follow the instructions of EPIC leadership and law enforcement authorities, ignore the provocations of these racist and bigoted losers and carry on with their worship and lives as usual.

As I visited earlier this week with survivors of the California wildfires, I was impressed by their faith and their goodness. Despite their own trials, they have continued to diligently look for opportunities to love and serve one another. We plead to heaven for all those around the world who are affected by tragedies. May we all feel God’s love and find the comfort we seek.

Today, the NCCM team stood by brother Mohsin Bhuiyan in Bowmanville and Clarington, ON after he and other Muslim farmers in the area suffered weeks of harassment, death threats, and other forms of abuse from local white supremacist and Islamophobic groups. What started as a crude online conspiracy theory about Muslim farmers running slaughterhouses in the area soon evolved into online death threats, in person harassment, and even the presence of drones flying over the properties of Muslim owners in the area. After prolonged investigations, authorities have long cleared these Muslim farmers of any wrongdoing, but that has not stopped the harassment. Now, an anti-Muslim rally is planned for tomorrow to further intimidate brother Mohsin and others in the area. Even a local Islamic school has been harassed by drones. Enough is enough. We will stand by those who have been badly shaken and affected by these utterly ridiculous and dangerous provocations. We are in touch with the authorities and call on all leaders to denounce this blatant campaign of Islamophobic harassment and intimidation.

This is why we believe organisations like the LMA and the PFA as well as the The FSA need to come out and condemn such behaviour in this country.
