We are outraged by a recent incident of Islamophobia that occurred on the Durham Transit. A hijabi women travelling between Scarborough and Ajax was allegedly both verbally and physically assaulted. A man allegedly began yelling at her telling her to “f*** off, “b****, don’t sit next to me.”, as well as calling her a “terrorist”. The incident further escalated when the man began to physically assault her. Another hijabi passenger on the bus intervened. Violent Islamophobia continues to be on the rise. The fact that it constantly occurs in broad daylight in public spaces should send alarms to all levels of government, given Canada’s dark history with violent Islamophobia. We cannot afford to wait until an incident like this turns to murder yet again, all levels of government must condemn and take concrete action. We are in contact with the victim and local authorities.

“Let the Epstein class fight the Epstein war." Listen to this important statement from Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew regarding how Canada must be unequivocal in our stance against the illegal war in Iran and Lebanon. We must not fight Donald Trump's war. We must not align with a mockery of international law and human rights.

Please listen to the story of Nevien Waly, who lost her position in Quebec’s education system due to Bill 94, which bans the hijab in public schools. Yesterday, the NCCM team spoke on Parliament Hill alongside Quebec women who lost their positions in the school system due to Bill 94, which expands on Bill 21. On March 23rd, NCCM will be at the Supreme Court of Canada to argue against Bill 21 ahead of the Court’s decision this year. This battle is about a Quebec government that is stripping citizens of their rights and freedoms. Canada must speak up. We will not stop until our Charter rights are fully restored.

We are deeply concerned about the alleged firing of a Palestinian journalist by Global News. Our legal team will be reaching out to provide support as needed. We will also be reaching out to Global News to better understand the reasoning behind the decision. 🎥 Zahraa Al-Akhrass

Please listen to the words of Mohamad Haidar, who spoke this morning in Windsor, Ontario about his brother, Hassan Haidar, who was killed last Friday by a senseless Israeli strike in Southern Lebanon. Hassan was a beloved member of his family and of the Windsor community. He is now among over 1,500 people killed by Israeli forces in the illegal bombing and invasion of Lebanon. It is time for Canada to back up its condemnations of these attacks with specific actions. As the family said, that means placing targeted sanctions on the Netanyahu government and ensuring that Canadians who are fighting for the IDF and committing war crimes must be appropriately prosecuted. We must have transparency and justice. Canada must stand up when its own citizens are being killed.

Today kicks off four days of hearings at the Supreme Court of Canada for the legality of Bill 21, Quebec’s religious symbols ban on public sector employees in positions of authority. We, alongside our partners with the CCLA, have been fighting for years. This is arguably the most consequential legal battle of our generation.

We are deeply concerned by an incident that took place outside a downtown Montreal mosque, where an individual urinated on the premises and, when confronted, proceeded to shout racial slurs. As the SPVM works to identify and find the individual, we call for all potential motives behind this act targeting an Islamic centre to be thoroughly examined, including the possibility of a hate-motivated act. At a time when incidents targeting Muslims and their places of worship are reaching alarming levels across the country, we urge elected officials to strongly condemn this act and take concrete action to address the rise in hatred and Islamophobia.

We want to begin by saying something very clearly. This weekend, at the NCCM & Islamic Relief Canada gala, the Mayor of Canada’s largest city, stood with us and spoke the truth: that what is happening in Gaza is a genocide. That truth matters. It matters to the mothers who have buried their children. It matters to those who have been silenced and vilified for saying what is obvious to anyone with eyes and conscience. And it matters to every Canadian who still believes that moral courage must guide public life. Mayor Chow’s words tonight were not about politics — they were about acknowledging the genocide in Gaza, and the path forward. It is an acknowledgment that has important policy implications, as we all know, because as well also all know, there are far too many who have not made this acknowledgment. Mayor Chow’s words tonight make it clear that recognizing genocide for what it is the only ethical imperative. The standard should be speaking the truth. What is happening is a genocide. The time where everybody had to sit around and pretend that what wasn’t happening wasn’t happening has passed. We don’t need to be bullied and cowed. That time is over, and it was over years ago. Speaking the truth is the only way to be decent right now. Everyone - and that includes our politicians - must speak the truth. As the Mayor also reminded us, there is still much wrong here in Toronto. And we’ve seen terrible things happen to shut down peaceful protests to stand against the genocide in Toronto over the past few years. There are communities who do not feel safe. There are systems that must be rebuilt. There is work that lies ahead. That is why NCCM exists. To call for justice in Gaza, and also justice everywhere in Canada. To challenge hate wherever it lives. In policy, in policing, in silence. To remind this country that our values mean nothing unless they apply to everyone.

Today, NCCM was at Parliament Hill to ask our government to do more to bring the direct relatives and dependents of Canadians out of Gaza, as well as call for a permanent ceasefire. We have heard far too many heartbreaking stories as we have tried to work to get Canadians and their families onto the list so that they can escape. While we continue to work with the government in this regard, it is also clear that the status quo situation is not acceptable anymore. “We are living night and day through non-stop bombing, through air, sea, and land invasion. Our neighbours’ buildings falling down. And hearing the screams of people asking for help. — Israa Alsaafin, a Palestinian Canadian reading a statement from her sister trapped in Gaza.

Today is the seventh anniversary of the Quebec City mosque shooting where six worshippers were gunned down and 19 injured. A night thay changed this country. A night that changed this community. A night that forever altered how we see our place in #Canada. It is because we honour their memory and their legacy that we have decided to cancel our meeting with PM Justin Trudeau as part of NCCM's national Advocacy Day today, focused on combating systemic #Islamophobia and anti-Palestinian racism. Enough is enough. We have waited long enough for empty promises to fulfill themselves, from an effective online harms bill, to intervention on Quebec's Bill 21, to the affirmation of Palestinian human rights. We either believe in human rights, or we don’t. This is why, in consultation with leadership from coast to coast, we made this decision.

We are deeply concerned by a man who appeared to try to use his car to ram a pro-Palestine protestor in Victoria, BC yesterday before accosting the latter and going on a racist tirade. This is the kind of apparent violence we have seen increase across this country. It is reprehensible, and our leaders must step up to stem this tide of hate. #Islamophobia and anti-Palestinian racism have no place in #Canada. We are looking into the details surrounding the incident and will be reaching out to affected parties. We will provide an update as it becomes available.

Today, Prime Minister was asked on where Canada stands when it comes to recognizing Palestinian statehood, as France just did, and as hundreds of UN recognized states have done, including Spain, Norway, and Ukraine. For the record, here was his answer. Canada must act now. It is impossible to stand for international human rights, to stand against illegal annexation, without acting to recognize Palestinian sovereignty and self-determination. Send a letter and push Canada for change.

This week, MP Sameer Zuberi took time to question Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) VP Aaron McCrorie at a House Immigration Committee hearing regarding IDF soldiers trying to enter into Canada. Zuberi asked McCrorie a series of questions regarding the process of screening those who have served in the IDF's campaign in Gaza for evidence of any involvement in the atrocities there. Any member of any military who violates international law and is credibly accused of war crimes must be held to account. For the record, here is the full exchange between MP Zuberi and Mr. McCrorie. Canada must align itself fully with human rights and international law, including at our borders.

Minister of Justice Sean Fraser was asked about Bill C-9 today and the possibility of the amendment to strip the Criminal Code of the protection for free religious speech in Canada. For the record, here is his full statement. While we appreciate that Minister Fraser thinks that the amendment to strip the good-faith religious text exemption will have no real implication on religious and individual freedom, we respectfully disagree. Among other factors, there would be no reason to strip the exemption at all in the first place if doing so had zero effect of the Criminal Code. We need more consultation on Bill C-9. All Canadians and concerned communities must be heard. We must protect freedom and free expression.
