Last week, a man in Toronto wearing the Palestinian flag was physically and verbally accosted on the streets, then told to "Get out of my country." Authorities have been notified, and we will be looking forward to seeing charges pressed against the person who initiated this incident. Yet again, we see what appears to be a peaceful demonstration for Palestinian human rights and identity met with violent threats, violence, and intimidation. This kind of anti-Palestinian racism has become normalized in Canada. It is a wide problem that requires immediate and broad solutions. We call on all leaders and elected officials to denounce this incident, and to sit down with Canadians to build a new way forward.

We have been aghast, as have many across Canada, with the racist and Islamophobic messages put forward by BC Post-Secondary Education Minister @selinarobinson. Her suggestion Palestine was a “crappy piece of land with nothing on it” is horrendous, especially in the midst of ongoing war crimes where thousands of children have been killed in Gaza. It evokes the language of terra nullius, where the people of Palestine are imagined to be non-existent. Her language is beyond offensive. Organizations across British Columbia are calling for her resignation, including organizations like the Canadian Association of University Teachers. It is hard for us to understand, given this comment amongst many others, how she can be expected to remain a Minister in Premier Eby’s cabinet. We note that Premier David Eby has sent a comment sending a clear signal that Minister Robinson’s comments were wrong and unacceptable. Islamophobia is wrong. Anti-Palestinian racism is wrong. Minister Robinson has been engaged in a pattern of behaviour that is wildly unacceptable. Full stop. We do note that we also find Minister Robinson’s “apology” to be woefully lacking, and contains no acknowledgment of Islamophobia or anti-Palestinian racism. We look forward to ongoing dialogue with the Premier’s office to understand what action steps will be undertaken to make things right.

We are in contact with those affected and with Halifax Regional Police. No one should face hate or fear while simply grocery shopping with their family. We call on all elected officials in Nova Scotia and Canada to publicly condemn this incident and to take concrete actions to formulate a national strategy against this massive rise in violent Islamophobia in recent months. We also thank the bystander who intervened against the man, and the Costco security staff who acted to remove the individual.

It is absolutely horrifying that an individual was able to invade a youth area inside the Winnipeg Islamic Centre Masjid Bilal just this weekend, while also screaming Islamophobic threats at those present. Authorities were called immediately and arrested the invader. The children are deeply shaken and scared, but thankfully, no one sustained any physical injuries. We now must come together with our elected officials across the country to address what has been a terrifying spike in anti-Muslim incidents across Canada. We are outraged by a recent incident of Islamophobia that occurred on the Durham Transit. A hijabi women travelling between Scarborough and Ajax was allegedly both verbally and physically assaulted. A man allegedly began yelling at her telling her to “f*** off, “b****, don’t sit next to me.”, as well as calling her a “terrorist”. The incident further escalated when the man began to physically assault her. Another hijabi passenger on the bus intervened. Violent Islamophobia continues to be on the rise. The fact that it constantly occurs in broad daylight in public spaces should send alarms to all levels of government, given Canada’s dark history with violent Islamophobia. We cannot afford to wait until an incident like this turns to murder yet again, all levels of government must condemn and take concrete action. We are in contact with the victim and local authorities.

It matters to the mothers who have buried their children. It matters to those who have been silenced and vilified for saying what is obvious to anyone with eyes and conscience. And it matters to every Canadian who still believes that moral courage must guide public life. Mayor Chow’s words tonight were not about politics — they were about acknowledging the genocide in Gaza, and the path forward. It is an acknowledgment that has important policy implications, as we all know, because as well also all know, there are far too many who have not made this acknowledgment.
