We can just decide that our world should be different. That modern JavaScript can be made with #nobuild. That SaaS services can move out of the cloud. That Apple is not the end of history.

Modern JavaScript can totally be shipped #nobuild. When I was in Chrome, we experimented with how feasible this was at scale. You can load around 50-100 smaller scripts/chunks before the cost of IPC benefits from using a bundler/tooling. But you can go pretty far.

Yes! HEY is all #nobuild. That's a full-on email client with tens of thousands of customers. Fizzy is all #nobuild. Writebook. Campfire. Everything we now make. Love it. Import maps gave us the ticket.

Fantastic seeing apps at scale successful with #nobuild and so happy import maps enabled it!

Someone please clue me in, what is #nobuild?

Sending JavaScript and CSS straight to the browser without preprocessing, transpiling, or bundling.

Tak. ☺️

Agree! I am exploring dApps development using the Verus Protocol an open source blockchain. Using VerusID it is possible to store, distribute and resell your code and assets. As an example i have made a HTML5 space shooter all onchain with #nobuild 🙌

Can’t wait for DHH to try drizzle

I had a dream for decades: make the console great again. Most sysadmins do not really require fluffy React pages with managed side effects and complex to build. Something that simplifies ncurses, like Terminal.GUI for Elmish. One day it could be more interesting to target putty rather than a browser.

20+ years ago we put Linux on old PCs and made them firewalls/routers/mail servers/web servers for small businesses. One small machine that ran everything.

i'm down, let's free javascript from react

did nobuild on a side project last year . way less painful than expected

Agree, with the caveat that modern JavaScript is not modern _enough_ until this passes and is shipped:

Lol is this an unc Bob impersonation :D

I've decided my rails app can work offline with no js build, using hotwire and I am getting near prod release.

You need to fight industry-scale brainwashing machines pushing their solutions and corrupting the minds of people who think they are clever because they build weird scaffolding and write everything in fragmented, granular code, as if that proves they are seven-figure engineers.

I've been on a self-hosting binge lately. You can run everything on docker these days, so it's easier than it's every been.

definitely looking to move @pawrlink to nobuild and decide a better / best infra

People are normally too afraid of this decisions because they take time and effort. Every thing in life that is worth it takes time and effort, might as well focus on the things that we want to do than follow the norm we don’t agree

fight the merchants of complexity

But you know what. most of us dont have the privilige to make this decision. it's being decided for us and we have to deal with that

He isn't wrong at all but people don't like change and most are lazy.

That we don't want to be locked into walled gardens. That we refuse to use shitty software!

Leave the cloud, it's better down here.

It's not that we can't build better tooling; it's the fact that popularity matters more than results nowadays. For example, Datastar is faster/smaller/simpler and can do out of the box provably orders of magnitude less IO than any SPA or turbo/stimulus apps. Hype > results atm

I love this. I remember when I started college (2003). I first had a PC, but found setting up the dev environment unpleasant. Then I got a mac and loved how easy it was.

Yes, let's do this.

cloud-out is the take that ages best imo. infra eating into saas margin is real and most teams just treat it as a tax they can't avoid. you been calling this since basecamp left

the hardest part is convincing people that "industry standard" isnt the same as "only option". most devs ive talked to genuinely believe cloud is just how things work now

Nice, allow me to follow up on that: I’ve decided to create what may be the easiest solution for self-hosting Docker containers, from homelabs to enterprise environments. If you prefer simplicity over unnecessary complexity, give Lightwhale a try:

I’ve been doing this for years and ppl called me crazy 🤪 🤣

been running @omarchylinux on my dell xps 17 9720 and it is fucking pristine, on windows fans sounded like a jet engine grinding to death and battery died in under 2 hours, today i ran linux unplugged for 6 hours straight and did not hear a damn thing, i love it

Yeah and with AI it is now easier then ever to do exactly that! I'm on the same boat.

There's just one problem. Inertia of madness, it's showing no signs of slowing down. Hardware gets faster, yet software bogs it down faster than it gets faster.

the web got weird when “view source” stopped feeling like an invitation and started feeling like archaeology

htmx + streaming is underrated. js bundle complexity becomes its own reliability problem at scale. for most apps, SPAs oversold the complexity. server-driven UI with great UX is achievable — latency is the real constraint, not the paradigm

The internet needed you a lot more than I thought. Thanks for being around 🙏🏻

great vid but is your head always this big

how about a world with modern look and feel of SPA? with zero client side js framework.. #htmx #streaming #sovrin
