When we came into office, we were confronted with a fictitious NHIF debt amounting to KSh 30 billion. Shockingly, KSh 5.6 billion of this was linked to the Linda Mama programme. This was not just a matter of numbers. It reflected years of weak oversight, inefficiency and mismanagement that compromised the quality of care delivered to mothers and their children. That is why, under the Social Health Authority (SHA), the Government has embarked on far-reaching reforms to rebuild trust and restore integrity in our health sector. We are tightening accountability systems, sealing financial loopholes and ensuring that every shilling invested in health translates into quality care for our people.

We are so close🤞. Please tag The Nigerian Senate and Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria to remind them🙏🏻. Retweet and ask others to retweet as well🙏🏻. Distinguished senator Senator Abdulaziz Musa Yaradua sir, we sincerely appreciate all your efforts and those of your colleagues in the The Nigerian Senate to bring sanity in the working conditions of the health workforce in Nigeria, particularly the Nigerian doctors. The excessive working hours of Nigerian doctors has been a nightmare and has caused many, their lives. It has also stood as a strong cause for outrage migration of many Nigerian doctors to other countries to practice. Mr presidents Bola Ahmed Tinubu renewed hope in Nigerias healthcare system which is been facilitated by the able minister Muhammad Ali Pate cannot be fully accomplished without a strong health workforce. This underscores the importance of targeting the root cause for this out migration of health workforce, which is the working condition. This is why we are calling on The Nigerian Senate to expadiate the hearing of the motion laid by Senator Abdulaziz Musa Yaradua on regulating the working hours of Nigerian doctors and abolition of the practice of continued work after a 24 hour in hospital call. The healthcare we desire is possible 💯🙏🏻. #abolish32hrsworkeverycallday

Even in war, healthcare is sacred. Yet in the past two years, World Health Organization (WHO) has recorded almost 2500 attacks on health. On #WorldHumanitarianDay, we call on world leaders to protect health workers and patients. The best medicine is peace. #ActForHumanity

In the terms of biochemistry and science, the last 50 years of modern healthcare have been an incredible success but when it comes to the health of the population, American healthcare has been a 50 year failure...we have had an entirely reactionary system, until now.

This is the most true statement that’s ever been spoken Conor McGregor “I am of the belief that the era of the politician must end. It must come to an end.” “It has proven unfruitful, and that is clear as day by the statistics and by what we see around us. It is straight chancery and our appointed ministers have no history in the roles that they are appointed to - Our Minister of Finance has no history in accounting - Our Minister of Health has no history in the health industry - Our Minister of Education was never a schoolteacher — It is straight chancery we are dealing with. The era of the politician must end.”

We also finalised virtual agreements with our Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda for the National Health Mission (NHM) and Ayushman Bharat. Under these, the central government has sanctioned ₹2,103 crores under NHM and ₹972 crores under Ayushman Bharat this year. Furthermore, we physically met with the Prime Minister, who also backed the newly launched 'Swachha App'. We discussed in detail the work that can be executed in the power and urban development sectors in West Bengal with the joint support of the Government of India and the State Government. West Bengal hasn't developed as much as it should have over the years. To completely rebuild this region, the Urban Development Ministry has an incredible opportunity to execute extensive work alongside the power sector. We will ensure that we seize that opportunity…”

It was a profound moment today as His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR Bola Ahmed Tinubu, launched the National Health Fellows and unveiled the State of Health Report 2024—two landmark initiatives that reinforce this administration’s commitment to a stronger, more resilient health system under the #RenewedHope Agenda. The presence of young Nigerians—brimming with potential and standing as a testament to merit, accountability, and service—captured the significance of this moment. This is not just a program; it is the foundation of a deliberate and strategic movement to improve health outcomes, strengthen service delivery, and foster leadership across all levels of the sector. The Fellows Program is a bold step toward investing in the next generation of health leaders, ensuring that talent is developed, nurtured, and deployed effectively. Out of over 360,000 applicants, 774 young men and women, representing every local government in Nigeria, were rigorously selected on merit. Their diverse expertise—spanning medicine, public health, technology, and policy—positions them as critical agents of change in the health sector. As President Tinubu aptly stated, the Fellows, “…are the future, the leaders of our health system, the torchbearers of a stronger and more resilient Nigeria.” Beyond this launch, the initiative signals a structural shift in how Nigeria cultivates and retains high-caliber talent within its health system. These fellows are not just recruits; they are workhorses of transformation, expected to strengthen accountability, improve service delivery, and enhance health system resilience at all levels. Recognizing the depth of their potential, I strongly advocated for their absorption into public service, reinforcing the need to retain skilled professionals within government institutions. President Tinubu affirmed this commitment, making it clear that these fellows are not just engaged—they are “hired.” This marks a decisive step in ensuring that investments in human capital translate into tangible improvements in health outcomes. The unveiling of the State of Health Report 2024 further underscores this administration’s commitment to evidence-based policymaking. For the first time since the National Health Act 2014 mandated an annual health report, Nigeria now has a comprehensive, data-driven assessment of its health system. Developed through extensive collaboration with development partners, state governments, civil society, and technical experts, the report offers critical insights into sector performance and serves as a baseline for future interventions under the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Initiative (#NHSRII). The findings highlight early signs of measurable progress, demonstrating the impact of ongoing reforms while underscoring the need for sustained investments and accountability. I would like to recognize the technical expertise of Sector-Wide Approach (#SWAp) Office, led by its National Coordinator, Dr. Muntaqa Al-Sadiq Muntaqa Umar-Sadiq, for their pivotal work in translating policies into action, fostering accountability, and ensuring effective coordination across stakeholders. Their dedication remains a cornerstone of Nigeria’s health sector transformation. As this movement gains momentum, the National Health Fellows now have both the platform and responsibility to translate this opportunity into sustained impact. Their work will strengthen frontline service delivery, drive innovation, and enhance accountability within the health sector. The task ahead is significant, but with the right support, policy continuity, and collective commitment, these fellows will drive the system-wide transformations needed to achieve equitable, quality healthcare for all Nigerians—fulfilling Mr. President’s vision of a healthier, more prosperous nation.

Fellow Nigerians and friends from around the world, good day to you all. Trust deficits between the governed and those who govern have long shaped our national story. Overcoming this requires public administrators across all tiers and branches of government Government of Nigeria to embrace accountability and transparency in managing the commonwealth of our people. In line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Bola Ahmed Tinubu Renewed Hope Agenda, we have begun the deliberate and necessary work of institutionalizing this approach in the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare Federal Ministry of Health, NIGERIA and in the agencies under our oversight. I am pleased to inform Nigerians that our ministry and its parastatals have entered into a multi-year pact with the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission ICPC to monitor, track, and audit expenditures involved in the nationwide overhaul of health infrastructure across all local government areas of the federation. In the medical profession, prevention is better than cure. This principle applies equally to our new approach to addressing official corruption and financial misconduct in the health sector. The primary objective of this pact with the ICPC is to institute preventive and corrective anti-corruption mechanisms, with particular emphasis on close surveillance of health parastatals and funding pathways under the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund Basic Health Care Provision Fund, which serves as a federal conduit to subnational entities responsible for the judicious use of resources. As part of this partnership, state and local governments will be integrated into strengthened accountability processes to ensure standardized anti-corruption measures nationwide. More specifically, the ICPC is mandated to report on the status of projects identified by the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency NPHCDA as a prerequisite for final certification of project completion. In real time, the ICPC will provide stage-by-stage monitoring of primary healthcare revitalization projects across all implementing states and local government areas to ensure value for money. Additionally, our pact with the ICPC introduces a new certification process for anti-corruption training and capacity-building initiatives to support health sector staff in preventing and addressing corrupt practices within their mandates. While these historic steps offer a sustainable template for fiscal prudence in the sector, we are simultaneously advancing a multi-dimensional strategy to confront the threat corruption poses to the health of every Nigerian. We recognize the critical role of our youth in driving reforms at the community level. This recognition led to the recruitment and deployment of hundreds of Performance and Financial Management Officers (#PFMOs) across all local government areas to continuously assess primary health centre rehabilitation and operational performance. This initiative complements President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commissioning of the National Health Fellows—774 young leaders from every local government area—selected through a rigorous process and prepared to sustain the new anti-corruption procedures aligned with their technical and administrative responsibilities. This fight against long-standing development inhibitors in the health sector is essential not only for improving the lives of Nigerians but also for enhancing donor confidence, with direct implications for non-governmental and multilateral financial support for key health interventions for our nation. This is our time to reclaim the nation we love, to reject what has held us back, and to affirm a new social contract grounded in integrity, renewed trust, and renewed hope. Thank you, and God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
