The City’s Bad Buildings Committee has returned to Pretoria Industrial for an illegal electricity disconnection operation. We've arrested an individual who was allegedly posing as a City of Tshwane contractor and was connecting electricity illegally in the area. A fake City of a Tshwane logo was found on their vehicle. We have also impounded the vehicle. Illegal connections endanger lives, damage infrastructure, and undermine service delivery. The Ekurhuleni government continues to demolish illegal structures in Cloverden Benoni, the informal settlement was built temporarily without any promises of permanent settlement. Illegal foreigners mining illegally in Benoni mines hijacked the informal settlement meant for South Africans and pushed out South African natives, which resulted in the informal settlement becoming a crime hotspot with motorists being targeted while driving on the N12.

The informal Settlement has a large number of foreign nationals and that has complicated efforts for relocation. Today, we targeted Christoffel Street, where we uncovered a hidden informal settlement situated at 473, behind a local supermarket which was previously a church. We discovered 30 shacks at the rear of the property, along with additional rooms inside the main building. Tenants are reportedly paying R1 300 in rent. We found a panel beating business and a ice shop operating inside the property. We also discovered that makeshift rooms had been established inside a toilet. Today, we conducted a special operation targeting Cemetery View and Plastic View Informal Settlements. We arrested over 90 illegal immigrants who are now being processed by Home Affairs. Deportations are expected in next few days following court approval. This is the beginning of a process to clean-up these areas. We have 800 South Africans who reside in Plastic View and they will be relocated by the City. City Power removes 3 tonnes of illegal cables in Kew: City Power, working with JMPD and SAPS, conducted an electricity enforcement operation in Kew, Johannesburg. Teams removed an estimated 3,000kg of illegal aluminium cables, worth about R200,000. Properties at 131 and 133 10th Road were disconnected after illegal connections and unregistered meters were found. City Power says illegal connections, cable theft and vandalism are placing severe pressure on Johannesburg’s electricity network. The operation forms part of a wider intervention following concerns raised in Alexandra, including overloaded networks, illegal connections, meter bypassing, cable theft and vandalism. City Power says it pays about R250-million a month for electricity supplied through the Alexandra network, while only about R29 million is recorded as revenue. An Alexandra Electricity Imbizo will be held on 18 August at 10:00 at the AlexSan Kopano Resource Centre. Residents are urged to report suspicious activity and electricity infrastructure theft.
