Pressing, transitions and goals in Canada! After the hiring of Jesse Marsch this week by Canada Soccer , there has been lots of talk about pressing and transitions in the football community. This is THE style of play that we have used for the last 5 years with Alliance United FC in @L1OMens and will give you some insight in how this can look. We went away from the 'possession' based 1-4-3-3 that everyone has been using as the 'best way' to develop players and win games. Many say this is the 'right way' of playing. However, we use the players' abilities and inabilities as the starting point and based on players produced in Canada, within our youth system, this is the way we think will get us the best results and help our players get to the next level. You need to understand youth development in our country to understand what is and what is not being taught to young players. This is not a negative outlook, it is just looking at the reality. Many mistake this style of play as just non-stop pressing and chaos. Yes, these two aspects are important but it is a much more deliberate and planned way of playing that is used to predict where the opposition will play the ball, where the ball can be dictated and what areas the opposition leave open for transitions when they attack. In 2019, I was introduced to Ernst Tanner former Academy Director of Red Bull Salzburg and current Philadelphia Union Sporting Director that has led the club to being one of the top clubs in MLS and arguably the best academies in North America the last few years. Both organisations are known for their pressing and fast transitions in addition to producing top players. He became a mentor to me and gave me insights and education on this style of play. He has changed the way I look at football. Every season we try to recruit players that can play this style that I will describe below and we do not waiver in the way we played. Every game since 2019 Alliance United FC have played either in a 1-4-2-2-2 or a 1-4-4-2 midfield diamond....every game. We have no secrets in how we play. We focus on defending, pressing, forcing teams into mistakes and transition football. It is important to understand that we do not care how much possession we have and we actually want the opposition to have the ball most of the time. Stats in football show that only when a team has the ball 70% or more in a match their is a correlation to winning. Anything less is not correlated to winning in a certain match. In addition, 80% of goals are scored under 5 passes or less and under 10 seconds when regaining possession. We follow the trend! So, here are some important points based on the video: a) Pressing higher up the pitch when possible. All 11 players are committed to the team intention (principles) and if anybody is not committed and does not contribute to this style of play, they do not play. There is no leeway on this. Either you are in 100% in or you are not. All it takes is one player to not commit and the plan will not work. If we do not win the ball on the high press, everyone is to drop behind the ball as fast as possible to restart the press closer to our goal. b) Based on the opponent's scouting we press certain players and decide if will press closer to the sideline and 'pin' the player to the sideline or we dictate the passes and dribbles centrally and 'surround' the player to win the ball in central positions. We also decide if we will sometimes drop lower for the opposition to advance so we can play behind them when winning the ball. This is done if we scout that the opposition centre-backs are slower than our two strikers. This means we will 'outrun' them in the space they leave behind. c) When winning the ball we want to exploit space behind their backline as the priority which means that a player(s) need to be passing options behind the backline and preferably centrally which is closer to the goal, players winning the ball has to look to play the ball to the player furthest up the pitch. Possession is not a priority but scoring goals as fast as possible is. d) When winning the ball we stay as central as possible with passes and dribbling. We use the width of the penalty area (44 yards) as the preferable dimension when transitioning. We want to stay within this width. The wider the team plays the ball, the more time the opposition has to block the middle. PLAY AS VERTICALLY AS POSSIBLE! The emphasis is to get the ball to the two strikers and play 1v1 against the CBs. e) We know that most youth players grow up playing against a 1-4-3-3 which means there is one central striker meaning the centre-backs one back press and one can cover. Against 2 strikers this is not possible and many centre-backs do not have the ability to play 1v1 with space behind them. They are not taught the cues to step and press or drop to protect space behind them. They are never taught at youth level. We exploit this deficiency. e) All 11 players must get up the pitch to close the spaces if we lose the ball from our attacking transition so the opposition cannot transition against us and we can counter-press. f) A goal is the best outcome based on the objective of attacking but at the minimum we want to get a shot on goal from a transition. This is a quick overview of a different way of playing football that Canada will see with the Men's National Team.

The reason Ruben Amorin needed “legs or ground eater” was because he never believed in players playing close to one another and keeping the ball for a long time. We often launched the ball to our strikers to beat press, he did the same at Sporting CP with Gyokeres and that caused our team needing to run so much because when we lose the second ball, we were in trouble.. It’s more about athleticism to him than techniques.. He never wanted players that are comfortable on the ball instead he likes players that can pick long passes so they can move the ball as quickly forward as possible and that’s why he never rated Mainoo.. Now Carrick has a different approach to football which is for players to play close to one another, take regulated and calculated risk instead of throwing the ball in the air at every chance which limits his need for “ground eaters” and increases his needs for actual ballers, guys that are comfortable on the ball and know how to pass it at the same time.

Cammy Devlin: Progress Play This again, is not a video to bash him, it's hard being a Rangers player & adapting to it, the attention and analysis from people like myself. Everything I do video wise, is the stuff I'd be open and honest with my own clients in professional football and with the same demands to "Play". Devlin is only just on & being a sub is not ideal but there are 3 occasions before his red card where he can do so much more with "little adjustments". The ball is with Dujon Sterling (RB): > Adjust to the Highest Central Point to support > Scan for the "Next Pass" before receiving > Explore Forward & Central Options First If you have done all that and still need to go back to where it came from, fine, do that but then re-adjust to get it forward or switched. Playing safe and being passive has contributed to the situation where he is trying to crash the box.

We are Kaizer Chiefs!❤️✌🏾 In just 4 months, coach Nasreddine Nabi has changed the mentality of our players. There is still a long way to go but we have made positive progress towards our goals: ▪︎ They don't settle for anything less than total domination! ▪︎ They use unbearable speed in attack, a clear Nabi attacking blueprint🔥🔥 ▪︎ Once we find spaces to attack, our movement and passes are very quick. ▪︎ The decision-making on the ball is getting better, and our structure is getting better every game. ▪︎ They create a lot of chances every game! ▪︎ They fight as a team! We are very flexible tactically. There is positive energy around the team. The players are regaining their confidence! How I Build My Teams I always liked the idea of ‘possession football’: - Control the game. - A tool to develop players. - The opponent can’t score without the ball. But I built it the wrong way: “Keep the ball. Find a gap to attack.” This turned into “side-to-side” passing. It was boring and ineffective. \ The idea. So, I flipped the idea: Instead of controlling to attack, we attack to control. Play as vertical as possible (while maintaining control). If not possible, pass back. Avoid sideways passes. For better connections and counter-press, we use a vertical, narrow structure: These simple decisions lead to short, vertical, and diagonal passes. This is what I call 'vertical possession' football. \ Make it work. The idea is simple. The execution is not. Over the years, I’ve worked to close the gap between vision and reality. (watch example below) My goal is to get closer to my vision every day. But as Vince Lombardi said: “Perfection is unattainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence.” Here’s my plan to 'catch excellence': 1. Build it my way. Ignore opinions. Opinions lead to conformity. We reduce our philosophy to its essence—and build from there. Everything else is a distraction. 2. Stick to it. We limit ourselves to core principles, and stick to them. When there’s a problem, we don’t change the idea—we improve its execution. 3. Eliminate waste. Building a style of play is like carving a statue. You start with a block of marble and chip away everything unnecessary. All that’s left is the sculpture. We do the same. We cut every unnecessary touch and step: - Fewer touches mean we need less time and space. We have more space to be creative. - The simpler it gets, the more recognizable the style. 4. Obsess over the players. We don’t adapt to opponents. We focus on our players. That's what matters in the long run. When our ideas work, we can compete against anyone. 5. Develop technical and creative players as a by-product. - Possession: Many touches to refine technique. - Vertical: No “easy” sideways passes. Learn to play in tight spaces. - Control: Avoid hectic football. Control the ball to make deliberate decisions. 6. One Training Structure. We compress our philosophy into one structure. Then, we repeat it every session. We make our style of play a habit. And we develop the tools to execute it. 7. Master a Few Exercises. We repeat a small set of core games over and over. We focus on improving execution, not on new drills. The better we execute, the faster we get to our vision. 8. Bottleneck Coaching. We can’t predict what happens, so we don’t over-plan. Instead, we prepare for what might happen. This liberates our coaching: Rather than sticking to pre-planned coaching points, we solve the most critical issue—the bottleneck. 9. Competition Drives Development. Games are the core of our training. Players compete to win. They force each other to get better and better, session after session. 10. Positive Team Culture. I used to react with anger when things didn’t go right. And yes, it can work in the short term. But to build something great, players must stay on the path for a long time. This is more likely when they enjoy the process. Positive reinforcement is harder to do, but more sustainable. \ What's next? That's the plan. Now, it’s all about execution. I'll keep you updated.

Introducing the “Get” action in basketball to lacrosse! The “Get” is a 2man action where a player passes the ball to another player and sprints to go “Get” it back on a handoff. This action has similar concepts and reads to pick and roll, but the picker is actually the ball handler! In lacrosse, we have been experimenting with Gets because it creates so many interesting situations and reads for the players. The way we teach it in small sided games is to have one offensive player declare “I’m shut” and the defense has to face-guard him. From there we pick for the shut off player trying to spring them free for the Get. The ball handler has to engage and control their defender, anticipating the shut player trying to get open. The shut player can backdoor if being overplayed towards the get (rejecting the get), receive a flip, or continue curling around the ball getting open for a late pass. The ball handler can feed the reject, flip the ball, or fake the flip to attack the goal or make a late pass to the shut payer curling to the goal. I’ve seen examples of this run in men’s and women’s DI lacrosse at Ohio State and Northwestern, respectively and I’ve run this myself when I was coaching HS girls lacrosse. You will also see on this reel a sick application for Gets vs. a common big-little invert coverage where the short stick doesn’t go behind with his man and plays “Safety” in front of the net. Gets are fun for the players, are incredible for teaching your players 2man game on and off ball, dealing with double teams, and creativity with passing, and can be used to score goals. Possession vs Progression: Patience or Lack of Ideas? Is Kaizer Chiefs showing more patience on the ball, or a lack of ideas to penetrate defensive blocks? Kaizer Chiefs were more comfortable in possession and better organised against Sekhukhune than against Golden Arrows over the weekend, but the key question was whether this represented patient control or a lack of attacking invention. Chiefs kept the ball but rarely broke lines. Circulation was often safe and predictable, with few passes between the lines, limited rotations in the final third and little movement behind the defence. Possession, therefore, did not consistently translate into clear chances. This also exposed structural and personnel issues in build-up. When we build in a 4-2 and the opposition blocks passing lanes to Maboe and Ox, progression becomes difficult. The fullbacks are not consistently high, while we lack enough quality from the back to play through pressure and connect with Baartman or Ighodaro moving into the half-spaces or behind pressure. These are passes a player like Aden McCarthy used to provide more naturally, but we often resort to long balls with poor accuracy. Midfield control is another concern. Ox made more passes into the final third[14] than Maboe, despite Maboe playing as the 8. We need the 8 to be more influential in these areas, helping control the flow and connect midfield with attack. Ox was effective at winning the ball and playing forward, but that responsibility cannot fall primarily on him given his technical flaws once the expectations rise. Sekhukhune's passive press gave Chiefs comfort on the ball, but it also highlighted how dependent our possession can be on the opponent's approach. We can circulate when unpressured, but still struggle to play through a well-organised press. Ighodaro is another example: he often drops too deep to get involved, yet when he makes runs behind the defence, he is not consistently found even when the space is available..we lacked players brave enough to play "that pass". We also rely too heavily on low-probability long shots instead of getting the ball into the box for players such as Silva, Ighodaro and Duba. Final-third decision-making has to improve. We need to get our best midfielders on the ball more often and, once we reach the attacking third, consistently find our most dangerous players in positions where they can hurt the opposition. We struggled to get Phili in the game in the 1st half. The second half was an improvement on the pointless circulation of the first. Chiefs played more forward, increased the intensity a little and benefited from substitutions that brought better movement in the final third. Instead of simply passing around Sekhukhune's block, we began moving it, creating spaces from both wide and central areas and the goals followed. Having a player capable of operating between the lines also made a difference by providing a link between midfield and attack. There are clear signs of progress in the coach's positional model, particularly in our ability to retain the ball and control games for longer periods. However, possession must become more consistently penetrative. This is also a squad-balance issue. The coach has asked for 4 attacking reinforcements, and management is yet to provide them[Only Phili came and Faiz is more of a project buy than a player who comes and hits the ground running] Some of these limitations, if attended to, should improve with better attacking profiles, but the existing group must still make better decisions in the final third. Kaizer Chiefs were more comfortable in possession and better organised against Sekhukhune than against Golden Arrows over the weekend, but the key question was whether this represented patient control or a lack of attacking invention. Chiefs kept the ball but rarely broke lines. Circulation was often safe and predictable, with few passes between the lines, limited rotations in the final third and little movement behind the defence. Possession, therefore, did not consistently translate into clear chances. This also exposed structural and personnel issues in build-up. When we build in a 4-2 and the opposition blocks passing lanes to Maboe and Ox, progression becomes difficult. The fullbacks are not consistently high, while we lack enough quality from the back to play through pressure and connect with Baartman or Ighodaro moving into the half-spaces or behind pressure. These are passes a player like Aden McCarthy used to provide more naturally, but we often resort to long balls with poor accuracy. Midfield control is another concern. Ox made more passes into the final third[14] than Maboe, despite Maboe playing as the 8. We need the 8 to be more influential in these areas, helping control the flow and connect midfield with attack. Ox was effective at winning the ball and playing forward, but that responsibility cannot fall primarily on him given his technical flaws once the expectations rise. Sekhukhune's passive press gave Chiefs comfort on the ball, but it also highlighted how dependent our possession can be on the opponent's approach. We can circulate when unpressured, but still struggle to play through a well-organised press. Ighodaro is another example: he often drops too deep to get involved, yet when he makes runs behind the defence, he is not consistently found even when the space is available..we lacked players brave enough to play "that pass". We also rely too heavily on low-probability long shots instead of getting the ball into the box for players such as Silva, Ighodaro and Duba. Final-third decision-making has to improve. We need to get our best midfielders on the ball more often and, once we reach the attacking third, consistently find our most dangerous players in positions where they can hurt the opposition. We struggled to get Phili in the game in the 1st half. The second half was an improvement on the pointless circulation of the first. Chiefs played more forward, increased the intensity a little and benefited from substitutions that brought better movement in the final third. Instead of simply passing around Sekhukhune's block, we began moving it, creating spaces from both wide and central areas and the goals followed. Having a player capable of operating between the lines also made a difference by providing a link between midfield and attack. There are clear signs of progress in the coach's positional model, particularly in our ability to retain the ball and control games for longer periods. However, possession must become more consistently penetrative. This is also a squad-balance issue. The coach has asked for 4 attacking reinforcements, and management is yet to provide them[Only Phili came and Faiz is more of a project buy than a player who comes and hits the ground running] Some of these limitations, if attended to, should improve with better attacking profiles, but the existing group must still make better decisions in the final third. I’m not sure Gvidas Gineitis is quite the style of player many seem to be casting him as. I don’t think he profiles best as a ball-winning midfielder or destroyer type. He likes to cross (takes set-pieces), has some athletic capabilities in carrying the ball and has a decent range of passing. Reasonably good in the air too. He seems to work hard defensively, but his efficiency rate in defensive duels is very poor. If he is a target, in my opinion it’s because of his physical profile and willingness to go forward and get the ball in the box.

DO YOU HAVE THE MOTOR TO BE THE BEST PLAYER? Players underestimate how hard it is to be the best player on a team or on the floor every night. To go out and score the ball while impacting the game in multiple ways takes alot of energy, effort, and resilience. Then, to go out and do that consistently on a night in and night out basis is even harder.

People of Nabi Ball!❤️✌🏾 There is progress in this team👏🏾 The patterns need time to develop and for the team to be consistent in them. ■ The left side looked better with Mmodi and Shinga✅️ ■ We needed Duba to attack the box and be available more when these 2 attacked on the left. He dropped to the edge of the box very often. ■ Unlike in the 1st half, there was a better understanding between Shinga and the LW. When Shinga overlapped, Mmodi was willing to occupy the pockets and combine. ▪︎ When Shinga inverted, Mmodi was happy to hug the line and take his man on. This understanding was key in that side coming to life in the 2nd half. ■ What was also impressive was the ability for them to create good combinations and movements with Mdu and Duba on the offense from the left side. ■ Lilepo from the right was getting into good goal scoring positions when the left was creating in the 2nd half, but poor decisions on the ball and slow reactions were a problem. He should compete on the LW with Mmodi. ■ In the 1st half, it was Monyane and Vilakazi on the right, and 2nd half it was Mmodi and Shinga with some of our best moments in attack. Overall, you can see the general attitude of this team changing. They want to play now.
