If I just buy her something nice for her anniversary, then I can stop worrying about it and I don’t have to [do other things].” No, it’s not like that. It’s endless. As soon as you accept the endless nature, you start looking at it differently. ![Sidney Lumet on the theme of "Daniel" (1983): "I don’t know if I’ve ever said this publicly, but I’ve done three movies, 'Daniel' (1983), 'Running on Empty' (1988), and 'Family Business' (1989), that are thematically the same thing—the cost that others pay for one’s passions—and I only recognized this after wards. It really begins with 'Daniel'. As I’ve said so often about 'Daniel', I wasn’t ever denying its political nature, but I was not being disingenuous when I also said it’s the exact same suffering that I’m talking about that kids have when their parents are artists. Any deep emotional commitment on the part of the parents is going to cost something . . . not just to the parents but also almost always to the children. Now, it can be a constructive cost or a destructive one. There are too many factors that go into it for me to try to label it one way or the other but there is no doubt that there is a cost. The positive side—one of the positive sides—is that the kids learn about passion, learn about commitment, learn about a million things that I personally admire. Never! We were just saying that it’s broader than the Communist Party, U.S.A. And I was very bothered by the reception that the picture got, first of all because I felt that the reception was political. I certainly know it was political as far as the New York Times went. When you analyze the movie, when you really look at it from a moviemaking point of view, it’s a brilliant movie. It’s an extraordinary movie. And that was never acknowledged."
