I wish to sincerely thank everyone who participated in the Fort Portal City clean-up exercise as part of the National Clean-Up Campaign. During the exercise, I discovered two “baby Rwenzori Mountains” made entirely of accumulated garbage. This is a clear reminder that we must strengthen waste management and make cleanliness a shared responsibility. Special thanks to all the leaders who have been part of this campaign. God bless you for your commitment and service to our people. Thank you, MTN Uganda, for partnering with us and supporting this important initiative. We shall clean all local governments across Uganda. Together, we will build cleaner, healthier, and more beautiful communities.

Our first stop was at Lilian Ngoyi Street. We have done a lot of work in the past few months to make this city is clean, but we know the job is far from over. The affected structures were obstructing the right of way and contributing to traffic congestion and environmental nuisance along the corridor. However, illegal dumping remains a major challenge, with some business communities, hawkers, and matatu operators using street families to dispose of waste improperly. I urge all businesses, hawkers, and matatu operators to take full responsibility for the garbage they generate by disposing of it at designated holding points. If they do not wish for the county to manage its transfer to the Dandora dumpsite, they can register with private service providers for doorstep collection. Maintaining a clean city is a shared responsibility. If we all embrace change and manage waste responsibly from source to final disposal we can achieve a cleaner, healthier environment for everyone.
