We have simultaneous storms yet again in the Pacific Ocean, with Tropical Storm Lala headed towards Hawaii and Tropical Storm Hernan desperately chasing after her (he will dissipate harmlessly out-at-sea). A Hurricane Warning remains in effect for the Big Island.

The weather system weakened back to a tropical storm as it continued moving west.

The Category 1 hurricane’s core scraped the southern tip of the island, but its eye ultimately passed just offshore, narrowly avoiding what would have been the Big Island’s first hurricane landfall in 155 years. Volcanoes National Park has taken over 20 inches of rain. Mauna Kea clocked a 140 mph gust. Maui, Oahu and Kauai remain under tropical storm warnings as Lala tracks south-west. This is Hilo’s Rainbow Falls today compared to a normal day.

Latest look at Potential Tropical Cyclone One. The system is near the Texas coast and could briefly become a tropical storm. Heavy rain is the main threat, with flooding possible in parts of Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi. Gusty winds and coastal flooding are also likely.

The previously unnamed Tropical Storm in the shallow Malacca Strait has since been given the name Senyar. The system made landfall over the city of Langsa in Aceh, Indonesia at a 50 mph (80 kph), 996 mbar peak intensity. But Senyar isn’t done. The storm has now RE-EMERGED into the Malacca Strait and is forecast to soon make a second landfall, this one in Malaysia. While Senyar won’t be very strong (potentially only ~40 mph), a Malaysian landfall by a bonafide tropical cyclone is historically rare, as few storms on record have formed this close to the equator (due to the weakness of the Coriolis Effect here).

It’s quiet - now - as we head into peak season, but that may change soon. The Atlantic has been under large scale sinking, crushing tropical development. But rising air from the Pacific is rounding the bend, and heading into the Atlantic in the coming weeks. That will cause favorable conditions for hurricanes to develop especially by mid September, but there’s a wave moving off Africa right now with a good chance of development later this week/weekend. The hope is that strong cold fronts in the US will block these Atlantic storms from reaching the US. Stay tuned. (Hurricane pictured is merely an illustration, not a real storm) #fyp # hurricane

Like the print on these boxers, this fart felt like a tropical storm shooting out of me, at category 5 levels of intensity. The hot, eggy and sewage stink erupting from me quickly took over the room. I’m in an island paradise, basking in my own stench.
