They are humans before being journalists.” Al Jazeera English correspondent Tareq Abu Azzoum has spent over six months reporting from the ground in Gaza. Many of his colleagues and loved ones have been killed in that time. He spoke with me about the reality of reporting from inside Gaza.

The National Union of Journalists (NUJ) has held a vigil outside Downing Street for Palestinian journalists killed by Israeli forces since the start of Israel’s war on Gaza in October 2023. The vigil followed the killing of Anas al-Sharif, one of Gaza’s most prominent reporters, alongside Mohammed Qreiqeh and three others, when Israeli forces targeted a tent sheltering journalists outside Al-Shifa Hospital. Each attendee at the vigil held the name of a journalist killed by Israel in Gaza. According to figures, at least 283 Palestinian journalists have been killed since the beginning of Israel’s war on Gaza.
