Many people, particularly those with college degrees, have absorbed a steady message that poverty is primarily the result of unfair systems, inequities, and forces beyond individual control. There is some truth to this. We do not live in a perfectly fair society. Still, in rich countries today, individuals have more influence over their economic outcomes than at almost any other point in history, and certainly more than in most societies past or present. When someone has been taught that poverty is caused almost entirely by external constraints, encountering poverty up close can be destabilizing. Seeing people repeatedly make self-defeating or irresponsible choices clashes with that moral framework, and for many observers, the tension between structural explanations and individual behavior can be genuinely unsettling.

This one hurt different. A 15-year-old kid… gone after a basketball game. But by someone who looks just like him. And that’s the part nobody wants to talk about. I didn’t move my son out the environment I grew up in because I was scared of the police… I moved him because I was scared of this. The reality where I gotta raise my child… and at the same time hope another child don’t take his life. That’s not okay. That’s a crisis. And where are the politicians now? They loud when it’s convenient. They loud when it trends. They loud when it gets them likes. But when our kids are killing each other? Silence. If you only speak on certain violence… then you’re not about justice. You’re about attention. Because real leadership means speaking up even when it’s uncomfortable… even when it forces us to look in the mirror. This is bigger than politics. This is about our kids. This is my first long conversation in a very, very long time. The idea was to talk about all the things that make Zerodha what it is today, because a lot of people don’t really know how differently Zerodha has been built compared to most other companies. We’ve never raised external capital. We don’t advertise. We don’t have a sales team with sales targets. We don’t do much marketing. We don’t push people to trade or invest. And we have a relatively small team that has remained at roughly 1,000 people since around 2018–19, even though the business has grown five or six times since then. In this conversation, I spoke about all these things and more: how we think about growth, risk, competition, and the future of Zerodha. This is also the beginning of a new series where we want to shine a spotlight on the people who have made Zerodha what it is today. I got a lot on my mind… We need to have real conversation on the left about many many things including why we continued to give Graham Platner multiple passes and look the other way despite all kinds of allegations since October. This is not just about dropping out the race. Yes he should do that. AND, we need a bigger conversation. We need to also have convos about Tucker Carlson, Marjorie Taylor Green and the recent death of a young Black boy in Mississippi. It’s all connected. I’ll just simply say, white supremacy is not going to save us. Patriarchy is not going to save us. We need to have real talk about white supremacy and patriarchy, because it’s a disease that affects us consciously and subconsciously and it’s systemic across all Americas institutions. We need Medicare for all and all the things we are fighting for and we need to cure ourselves of patriarchy and white supremacy. Time for a process of truth, reconciliation, and collective healing!

But when something addresses the concerns of the American people, we need to find common ground and get things done. This isn’t just about the election in 2026 or the election in 2028. It’s about right now. It’s about making people’s lives better now. A lot of people will say, “Well, the Republicans didn’t do that. They didn’t help Biden get things done. They didn’t work across party lines when they controlled the House.” And that’s true. It was the least productive Congress in modern history… But just because that’s what they did doesn’t mean that’s what we should do. It’s not just about winning. It’s about trying to move the country forward, solve problems, and make people’s lives better. This business isn’t worth it for the ego or just for the competition—“I’m right, you’re wrong; I win, you lose.” It’s only worth it if we’re actually making the world a better place to live in.
