When the cost to borrow is 500% higher than it was 5 years ago it causes banks and hedge funds to exit investments that no longer provide a return given the new costs to borrow. There’s a lot of 5 year paper that’s coming due this year that was being loaned at 1-2%. Those loans get cancelled and the investments, derivatives 😉, etc they were funding on margin get sold off.
