We were invited to look at BAE Systems’ Herne, a large, advanced autonomous submarine. Herne is built to be expendable yet capable. In the next 18 months, BAE plans to enhance Herne's operational capabilities, range and performance.

Interested to know the cost of one of these, and with torpedos, it sounds ideal to have one just hanging around the Falklands, in addition to an upgunned River Class OPV.

I can see tomorrow’s headline: The seven Astute class will be retired starting in 2025, to be replaced by the Herne class of three autonomous subs beginning in 2038, providing the RN with a substantial increase in capabilities across all platforms.
