How can you hope to integrate if you don’t speak English? Pauline got a very strange question from an SBS journalist at her big media event earlier this week. The journalist said that SBS provides news in over 60 languages. According to the journalist in question, this was meant to help integration! In response, Pauline made it clear that no one should be allowed to permanently settle in Australia unless they speak English. Clearly, this must be an absolute prerequisite. This clip has caused quite a stir - I stand by every word. It's estimated that the NHS spends £100 million a year on translation/interpretation. Is that a cost the British taxpayer should bear? The answer is a resounding no. I'm told that foreign patients feel 'more comfortable speaking in their native language'. To be entirely honest, so what? It's not our problem. If that's the case, they can bring a friend/translator - as Brits have to do all over the world if we want to access healthcare. That, or use tech/AI, which can provide rapid and incredibly accurate translation services. Not forgetting that we also have a huge issue with foreign nationals using the NHS, and then not paying. The Department of Health has confirmed to me that £100,000,000 was the amount due from 'chargeable overseas visitors' in 2022/23 for NHS treatment. The amount actually collected? Just £32,000,000. So yes, we should be more aware of people unable to speak English accessing NHS services - failure to pay invoices is costing us a vast amount of money every year. Clearly, exceptions should be made for sign language and Welsh speakers, but this is a minuscule amount of overall translation costs. Why should the British taxpayer fund translation into Romanian? Urdu? Bengali? And hundreds of other languages. Sorry, but it is NOT our problem. And you know what? A huge number of MPs agree with what I'm saying, but don't have the balls to say it. The country would be in a far better place if our politicians would outline uncomfortable truths, even if it results in being insulted and abused. I don't care. The NHS pleads poverty, then pumps money into translation/DEI. Health service leadership needs to get urgently get its priorities in order. We need a selfish NHS, that puts the British people first.

I’m told it is to help local residents in the area that are “evolving”. My view is simple: if you live in England, you should speak English. Full stop. Now, the whole UK is erupting. We do not want this in America. If democrats ever get back in power, they will bring this to OUR DOOR. They already tried under Biden. Do you want that? Currently, Floridians have to pay a fee to the government just to be able to keep their home. This is wrong. I agree with the Governor that we should eliminate homestead property taxes. We also must ensure key local government services are fully-funded and remain operational.

My goal in this budget process has always been to make sure we’re funding core, basic services in a balanced and disciplined manner. We know there is an inherent tension between asking people to pay rates, fees and taxes— and the issue of affordability. We want to make sure our city can provide the quality-of-life services that our residents deserve, but we also want to make sure we’re putting affordability first in our community. While I worry a lot about affordability, I also worry about the ability of our city to deliver quality services without more revenue. I strongly believe that if we're not making the kinds of investments we need to make in our people and our services, we will be managing decay in Austin in a very short period of time. This budget will not meet everyone’s concept of perfection. Truthfully, there are parts of the budget that I don’t like. That goes with living in a big, diverse city—different people will have different priorities, and we need to make room for all of us. Now, it is time for us to trust our voters. Voters have an opportunity in November to make a very important decision. From my perspective, the best part of this budget is that we fully fund our homeless strategy office. That was my greatest emphasis, and we've achieved it. It will make a world of difference in getting homeless people off the street in a very short period of time. I'm also very pleased with what we’ve added to funding for public safety, EMS, and wildfire prevention. A positive vote in the November tax rate election will allow us to pay for these needed services. And we make a significant investment in our parks. I look forward to a result that will be the best benefit of our community.
