Another major governance problem in the NYDA is that there are essentially 3 CEOs. I don’t understand why we need an Executive Board Chair and Executive Board Deputy Chair when the Youth Agency already has a CEO. The Board is way too operational! Worse the Board Chairperson says that the Executive Management Committee (EMC) meets every 3 months. How can an operation committee meet every 3 months? Fundamentals of Corporate Governance are clear that the Board should provide oversight, while the CEO manages the day to day affairs of the entity. I actually feel very sorry for the CEO, who must navigate competing centres of authority. Though, it’s a historic policy issue that predates this Board, my suspicion is that the ANC created this structure to give politicians in the Board more grip over the operations of the entity. That’s how the stealing starts!

Try not to post during the day (legal team worried I’ll drop a clanger) BUT Have to comment after that evidence. Chair ‘can I ask who is in charge of the decisions. The clinician or the patient?’ Dr T ‘um……’ Says it all….. Everything that is wrong in Psychiatry today. Autonomy for patients must not override serious risk to others. Parliament cannot script a judgement of a court. Parliament can only legislate and hold institutions, including Judiciary and Executive, accountable. Judgement writing, adjudication, is the sole prerogative of Judiciary, as much as legislation is that of the Parliament. But frequently we are seeing that the executive governance is by judicial orders. When the government is elected by people, it is accountable to Parliament. The government is accountable to the people at election. There is a principle of accountability in operation. In Parliament, you can ask questions, critical questions, because the governance is by the Executive. But if this executive governance is by Judiciary, how do you ask questions? Whom do you hold accountable in elections? Time has come for our three institutions, Legislature, Judiciary, and Executive, to blossom. And they blossom best when they operate in their own area. Any incursion by one in the domain of the other poses a challenge, which is not good. It can upset the balance. The relationship between these three must be wholesome, soothing, one of deep understanding and coordination, not show of authority. #RajyaSabha

Today I raised an urgent question in parliament about the systemic failures in the water sector. The constants disasters of privatised water are not the symptoms of market failure. This is the market working as designed: profits out, sewage in, cost of living up, security of supply, decimated. You can no more regulate privatised water companies than you can the tide. So I asked the Minister for Water: how many more failures, how many more inquiries, how many more deaths - before the Government accepts these problems are systemic – and gives the public the option of taking their water back?

Ably backed by his support team of ‘least resistance staff’ at NHS Nottingham and Nottinghamshire to ensure he never faced stigma, never had to be challenged, do anything he didn’t want to do - or, god forbid, be held to account. 📢 PAKISTAN IS THE PROBLEM - Lalit Modi I was the one that brought Pakistani players into the IPL and then I had to move them after the 26/11 massacre in Bombay. The problem is if the Pakistan Cricket Board was independent and ran independently, if it wasn't politically influenced, we would have some traction. But today the Pakistan Cricket Board is so politicised by the powers that be and they are pulling the levers and making it political. We have tension at that level, political level and that is not going away. It's only going to get worse. So I fear for the players. I don't see an immediate solution right now and and you saw Bangladesh trying to get into it. They shouldn't have. (© - The Overlap Cricket)

Having served on the board of SWB NHS Trust as a Non Executive Director (NED) since the summer of 2015, I’ve now served the maximum term of office for a NED on an NHS Board so it’s time to say goodbye to my amazing colleagues at this brilliant institution. I’ve learnt so much during the 8 years working alongside some of the best public servants who go above and beyond the call of duty to care for patients and tackle health inequalities in our community. I want to put on record my thanks and gratitude to all my colleagues on the board led by david nicholson and Richard Beeken and wish the entire team across the trust all the best for the future.
