Well, for all the strength vs endurance arguments this kid just said “how about I just excel at both?”. Wild.

This should inspire guys like @Brady_H (already a beast of a runner) and @BioLayne (super strong lifter) & it’s not meant to criticize anyone who prefers just/mostly strength training or endurance training. It’s just remarkable when somebody does both at such a high-level.

It was always a false dichotomy but high school and college sports make you choose a lane and then inertia sets in. Now that you can build a brand doing dazzle dazzle hybrid performances, people see what's possible.

Having competed in both masters powerlifting & masters track my observations is wow so many of them look to have injuries, aches & pains overall poor health. I'm not sure if its a crap diet or focus on just one aspect of training IMO you want balance especially as you get older

The kid just broke the 'you can only optimize one system at a time' rule that coaches have been selling for decades. Which protocol did you see him running - concurrent training or fully periodized blocks?

For surf prep, I’ve found a short circuit of pull-ups, split squats, and hard bike intervals keeps both qualities moving. I keep the reps crisp and stop before the next session feels flat.

Exactly. Strength and endurance don’t have to be an either/or choice. Especially as we get older, I want to preserve strength, muscle, power, cardiovascular capacity, balance, and the ability to keep doing hard things. After decades working in physical therapy and rehabilitation, I’ve seen what happens when those capacities are allowed to disappear. Train for capability, not just appearance. Build as much reserve as you reasonably can while you still can. That reserve matters later.
