The fourth edition of Ather Community Day is here! The idea behind these community days actually goes back to 2016. Back then, we were a startup without a product. We started Community Meetups as a way to tell our stories and, just as importantly, learn from our owners. Those conversations shaped not just how we talked about Ather, but what we built. Exactly five years ago Fahim & I launched the very first version of NMKR. Back then NFTs were completely new, Native Assets on Cardano just became a thing, Cardano had no support for Smart Contracts & the Spacebudz were barely 1 month old. NMKR was still called NFT-MAKER and our primary colour was blue, not green. Fahim designed the page & I built NFT-MAKER v1 in a few days, while writing my final university thesis (about creating a Metaverse on Cardano btw). There was nothing going on in Cardano, no dApps, no users, nothing. ADA price was at less than 10ct (if i remember correctly) and all of Cardano X was just Stake Pool Operators shilling their Stake Pool to other Stake Pool Operators. NFT-MAKER became incredibly popular very quickly, even though you could only mint 1 NFT at a time and the tool was super rudimentary. But people liked it and we minted I believe almost 50,000+ NFTs just with NFT-MAKER v1. Then NMKR Studio launched a few months later and changed everything. Today 5 years later, with many very high highs & low lows I look back and can proudly say: We're still here. And even though the market has changed a lot, the team has changed, cofounders left, we almost ran out of money multiple times + all the other hard things we had to do, we've adapted and have shown resilience. Taste is invisible until you try to write it down. This is probably my biggest lesson with AI building as of late. At Sundial, I get to work with really friggin' amazing analysts who know the art, and I see how much of our collective time now is now spent turning that art into playbooks or skills for an LLM. Encoding things like: "How would a great analyst actually look at this metric move?" or "What is ACTUALLY the interesting signal in this story versus noise?" or "How can we know if a product change actually moved the needle?" It's really humbling work! You write an instruction set. The LLM misses. You add more context. It still misses. You add even more. Now it's confused. You strip it back. Now it's too vague. You try a different framing. Better, but inconsistent. Works on Monday, fails on Tuesday. You go again. I've come to realize the gap between 70% quality and 95% quality is not 3 or 4 big things. It's more like 100s of small things. Which is exactly why you can't write an article about it, or copy it, or shortcut it! This gap *is* taste, quantified. The accumulated weight of a thousand small judgments you don't notice you're making, until you sit down to externalize them and realize you can't. Being good at something is not the same as being able to articulate why you're good at it. I now see two bottlenecks to making something better than today's generic AI: 1. Can you *see* what better looks like in the first place? 2. Even if you can see, can you *articulate* what that is in a way that the LLM can understand and systemize? #2 is now a new craft, the art of distilling the art. The people who can do it well are the ones building standout products.

As a millennial, I've spent my entire adult life hearing some variation of the same economic warning. Recession. Inflation. Housing crisis. Cost-of-living crisis. Rising interest rates. Stagnant wages. Every few years, there's a new headline, a new concern, a new reason Canadians should be paying attention. At some point, you stop paying attention. Not because you don't care. Because you've heard it all before. I'm 36 years old, and Canada has entered its 5th technical recession during my lifetime. Eventually, it shows up in bigger ways: postponing children, delaying homeownership, working overtime, or realizing the future they imagined keeps moving further out of reach. What I find most interesting is that even after Canada officially entered a 'technical recession', much of the media conversation focuses on reassuring Canadians that it isn't as bad as it sounds. We've become completely desensitized to what a recession actually means. Not because the definition has changed. Because our relationship with the word recession has changed.
