Every time I hear “Stop learning to code. AI will do it,” I worry. That is dangerous advice. Andrew Ng nailed it. When something becomes easier, more people should do it, not fewer. When coding moved from punch cards to keyboards, demand exploded. When higher level languages replaced assembly, people predicted the end of programmers. They were wrong. Now AI assisted coding is here. For the first time, a GenAI native graduate can outperform an experienced engineer stuck in old workflows. Impressive. But here’s what matters. The real advantage belongs to those who combine deep architectural thinking with AI fluency. In the companies I advise, the pattern is clear: - Experienced engineers who master AI - Deep thinkers who combine architecture + automation - Professionals who upgrade instead of resist AI lowers the barrier. If you make Power BI reports, I think you might enjoy stepping outside of Power BI to experiment with coding agents and dataviz libraries like Vega, Altair, or d3.js. Here's an example of a dashboard I made with FitBit data. While making the pbir-cli (testing starts this week, thanks to everyone who showed interest!), we learned a lot. Chiefly: we've found it's really, really hard to get an agent to work well with Power BI reports!! Power BI reports are built around abstraction and different intersecting layers. Themes, metadata, extensions, the model... all of it built for a low-code SSBI experience (clicky-clicky-draggy-droppy). That's fine for you and me (mostly). For a coding agent, though, it's inflexible... maybe even hostile. Even with the right tools and context, you simply can't get a Power BI report to reliably do _exactly_ what you want; it's just not meant for that. If you experiment a bit with Vega, Altair, or d3.js... you'll see what I mean; the contrast is pretty clear. This isn't necessarily a bad thing; unlimited flexibility may lead to inconsistency, and there's creativity in constraints. But still, I've been wanting to explore visualization without these constraints... My experiments beyond Power BI reports have been interesting and given me a lot to think about. The most promising approach so far: viz-as-code with custom embedded visuals, pulling from local or remote data sources. This stepcount dashboard is one such example... made in just a few hours between other tasks. Materializing a dashboard like this from natural language wasn't really viable a year ago. Project out another 12–18 months and it's certainly difficult to imagine what the future looks like... That said, reports and dashboards in an enterprise context aren't just visuals. Governance, distribution, integration, etc... years of individual and organizational investment. All of that makes change have a speed limit; we won't be plugging in custom embedded dashboards, overnight. But if you're curious, I do think it's a good investment to step outside Power BI and experiment. Investments you may even be turned into custom visual designs, anyway :). As Havens Consulting put it recently to me: it's time to multiclass...

Andy Reid shares his approach to coaching and the philosophy that guides everything he does. He has one notecard on his desk to remind himself of one thing. The notecard says: "Don't judge." Reid said, "We're here to teach, not to judge." "I'm gonna come in with an open slate. You're gonna paint the picture for me on how you take in the day." "Whatever God-gifted abilities you have and how you're willing to exploit those to the best of your ability - it's an empty slate when you come in. You're gonna paint that picture for me." Every player gets a fresh canvas. What they do with it is up to them. Then he was asked how he balances not judging with having to evaluate: "I'm (going to) give you an opportunity to show...Somewhere we gotta make a decision on who can make the team, who doesn't." "If you've gone about this the right way - if you've attacked that painting properly - we're gonna try to help you get on with somebody else." Even if you don't make the team, if you did it right, they'll help you find a home. Then he added something that shows who he really is: "There might be a few of you in here that are gonna be surgeons—and you might be doing surgery on me someday. So we're gonna treat you well." New short course on Pretraining LLMs! Developed with Upstage and taught by their CEO Sung Kim and CSO Lucy Park. While prompting or fine-tuning existing models works well for many general language tasks, pretraining is valuable for specialized domains or languages with limited representation in current models. This course walks you through the LLM pretraining pipeline: 1. Data preparation: Learn to source, clean, and prepare training data using HuggingFace. 2. Model architecture: Configure transformer networks, including modifying existing models. 3. Training: Set up and run training using open-source libraries. 4. Evaluation: Benchmark performance using popular evaluation strategies. As an example use case, you'll also compare the output of a base model with its fine-tuned and further pretrained variants, to see the impact of pretraining on a model's ability to write Python. The course also explores an innovative technique called depth up-scaling, which Upstage used to train their Solar model family, reducing pretraining compute costs by up to 70%.
