so I started with FreeCAD, since i am a linux guy, haven't touched windows since the past 8 years. Also I did this online course from Uni of California Irvine on "building your hardware for your embedded and IoT projects" which had FreeCAD as the main CAD software. FreeCAD was free, and fun, yeah a bit buggy sometimes but gets the job done, since initially all the CAD work i had was just builidng cases, or mounts, or some light hobby stuff. So FreeCAD did just fine. Then I joined a company as a product engineer where I worked with LiFePo4 home energy storage battery packs and was responsible for all the modules of the pack (Cells, BMS, MCUs, Touch Display ) mainly the embedded system. Since I was the product engineer, I'd have back and forth convos with the CAD designers off the battery pack box/casing. I didn't really do any CAD work on that project, tho it seemed really interesting to me. They used Solidworks, and I installed windows for it(swallowing that was difficult); to do Solidworks in my free time which I hardly got. I tried Solidworks and I kinda liked it. But then I quit the job and started working on my SAAS products. A few months into it, it's not fun anymore, slowly getting started with CAD and eventually to electronics to hardware products. Now, I want to go about CAD. I'll be doing a 30 days CAD challenge increasing in complexity and will be sharing daily progress here! It was day 2; I designer a bolt and a nut. I'm going with Fusion 360 for now, coz i like the UI/UX and the hobbyist version is free. So yeah. This is so much fun, i completely lost track of time while doing it. Gemini on the side is alot helpful.

Say hello to text-to-cad, an open source tool for generating 3D models in Codex! Prompt and edit complex 3D models. Export STEP, STL, GLB, DXF and URDF files. Built for CAD newbies. Link to github below. CAD is hard. As a software engineer getting back into robotics, I’ve been humbled by new tools like Onshape. Struggling to kick old habits, I started prompting Codex to generate 3D models and had some limited succes. After a few iterations I found a recipe that actually works: 1. Generate a python script for every STEP file. The agent can easily edit each part’s source without touching the raw STEP file. Use build123d > cadquery. 2. Reference specific faces and edges in prompts for precise edits. I built a basic local ui to inspect / cache STEP B-reps to make this easier. 3. Maintain markdown explaining important part features in plain English so the model can index on project context quickly. 4. Verify results with screenshots and geometry. Models don’t have great spatial awareness, but they can interpret images and verify constraints very well. For the best results I’ve been using GPT 5.4 xhigh / Opus 4.6+. Fair warning, this will burn through tokens, I recommend the Pro/Max plans if you’re planning on building anything serious. PRs welcome!

Build a humanoid robot yourself! 🪚 OpenArm is an open-source humanoid robot. It comes with full CAD, control code, firmware, and simulation tools, everything needed to build, modify, and operate it. The arms are designed to be compliant and backdrivable. Teleoperation is supported, with force feedback and real-time gravity compensation so operators can guide the arm naturally. Super important, on the simulation side, OpenArm works with platforms like MuJoCo and Isaac Sim, letting developers test policies in virtual environments before running on hardware. New Course: ACP: Agent Communication Protocol Learn to build agents that communicate and collaborate across different frameworks using ACP in this short course built with IBM Research's BeeAI, and taught by Sandi Besen, AI Research Engineer & Ecosystem Lead at IBM, and Nicholas Renotte, Head of AI Developer Advocacy at IBM. Building a multi-agent system with agents built or used by different teams and organizations can become challenging. You may need to write custom integrations each time a team updates their agent design or changes their choice of agentic orchestration framework. The Agent Communication Protocol (ACP) is an open protocol that addresses this challenge by standardizing how agents communicate, using a unified RESTful interface that works across frameworks. In this protocol, you host an agent inside an ACP server, which handles requests from an ACP client and passes them to the appropriate agent. Using a standardized client-server interface allows multiple teams to reuse agents across projects. It also makes it easier to switch between frameworks, replace an agent with a new version, or update a multi-agent system without refactoring the entire system. In this course, you’ll learn to connect agents through ACP. You’ll understand the lifecycle of an ACP Agent and how it compares to other protocols, such as MCP (Model Context Protocol) and A2A (Agent-to-Agent). You’ll build ACP-compliant agents and implement both sequential and hierarchical workflows of multiple agents collaborating using ACP. Through hands-on exercises, you’ll build: - A RAG agent with CrewAI and wrap it inside an ACP server. - An ACP Client to make calls to the ACP server you created. - A sequential workflow that chains an ACP server, created with Smolagents, to the RAG agent. - A hierarchical workflow using a router agent that transforms user queries into tasks, delegated to agents available through ACP servers. - An agent that uses MCP to access tools and ACP to communicate with other agents. You’ll finish up by importing your ACP agents into the BeeAI platform, an open-source registry for discovering and sharing agents. ACP enables collaboration between agents across teams and organizations. Wow! AI ASSISTED GARAGE MANUFACTURING IS ABOUT TO EXPLODE! CAD Drawings From Just A Picture! MIT just released something profound for creators and engineers alike. Picture this. You take a photo of an object, upload it, and an AI delivers a fully parametric CAD model, complete with editable code and construction history. This is open source GenCAD, from MIT's Decode Lab. It uses autoregressive transformers and diffusion models, trained on hundreds of thousands of images and CAD files. Input a 2D photo or sketch. Output valid CadQuery Python code that beats models like GPT-4.5 in accuracy. Why does this matter? It speeds up reverse engineering, prototyping, and part searches in vast databases. No more hours spent modeling from scratch. Field repairs, custom designs, education, all transformed. It even retrieves similar parts from libraries of thousands. For industries like manufacturing and aerospace, it cuts costs and boosts innovation. Hobbyists gain pro tools without the steep curve. I am testing it now on random objects and can not believe how much of a super power this is. I can start dozens of companies just on this AI model.
