In feature film VFX, our lighting teams spend a lot of time shaving off as much render time as possible. Even 1 minute saved per frame adds up. For a 5 second shot, 1 minute less per frame saves you 2 hours of rendering per shot. Our shots are usually a lot heavier than this and our teams usually get a lot more optimization for render times than 1 minute per frame. Some shots can be rendering for up to 30 hours per frame depending on complexity. Large studios have a plethora of optimization tools which shave off a lot of render time from our shots. Rendering technology is always improving, bringing render times down and increasing physical accuracy. Video is of Hyperion with interactive rendering with Pixar's RenderMan XPU renderer, which is up to 5x faster than their older RIS architecture.

$Great question! 🤔 How do you simulate *multiple* layers of glass/refraction in video games? In the last breakdown, I discussed how to create a glass shader in Unity URP. In essence, we were taking the render of the scene from the camera without any transparent objects. This is available in URP as the global _CameraOpaqueTexture. This is good enough for most use-cases, and more or less the classic way of doing it. 🔍 What is _CameraOpaqueTexture? As the name implies, there are no transparent objects rendered into this texture, so it's not possible by default to have something like a transparent-type ocean material/shader rendered through a refractive glass shader (which samples and distorts this texture to render on its surface, as if it's transparent). ⚠️ Why it’s tricky: It's much easier to sort without much further setup if you don't have refraction, and only a transparent material, because in that case you're not simulating the transparency yourself via sampling the rendered scene texture. But for refraction, it's required-- unless you want to go down the ray/path tracing route. You could simulate accurate, real dispersion... and that's about as expensive as it sounds, and it requires a rework of your entire rendering. --> 🚫 It's not a viable suggestion to offer. 📚 There are well-known terms regarding transparency sorting you can search up, but as you've specifically asked for refractive boxes, I'll discuss briefly about that. 🧱 Simulating layers of refraction: For this kind of rendering, you need some way to render the backfaces before rendering the front. And the backfaces that are rendered may contain whatever data you'd like for additional processing in the layer front-facing mesh render. 🧪 Examples: You could render the back face as a glass shader of its own, as an intermediate step after _CameraOpaqueTexture. Then you sample this texture instead and you end up with multi-layered refraction, "just like that". You can also render the back normals only, via a fully opaque shader, and use that to manually account for that during the front render. You could even bake in data needed for thickness in realtime. 🛠️ Without making it complicated for yourself, the most straightforward method is via render textures, and you can easily set some fractional resolution. Cameras in Unity have an open slot for target textures to render to. You can use custom render textures to process _SelfTexture2D. ⏱️ It's great to do low-resolution processing for more complex tasks, like blurring and caustics. Fast View Synthesis of Casual Videos paper page: Novel view synthesis from an in-the-wild video is difficult due to challenges like scene dynamics and lack of parallax. While existing methods have shown promising results with implicit neural radiance fields, they are slow to train and render. This paper revisits explicit video representations to synthesize high-quality novel views from a monocular video efficiently. We treat static and dynamic video content separately. Specifically, we build a global static scene model using an extended plane-based scene representation to synthesize temporally coherent novel video. Our plane-based scene representation is augmented with spherical harmonics and displacement maps to capture view-dependent effects and model non-planar complex surface geometry. We opt to represent the dynamic content as per-frame point clouds for efficiency. While such representations are inconsistency-prone, minor temporal inconsistencies are perceptually masked due to motion. We develop a method to quickly estimate such a hybrid video representation and render novel views in real time. Our experiments show that our method can render high-quality novel views from an in-the-wild video with comparable quality to state-of-the-art methods while being 100x faster in training and enabling real-time rendering.

Fun fact: It would take the average PC roughly 138,069,000 hours or about 15,761 years to render Avatar: The Way of Water. Here’s how I worked it out: The average PC in 2024 has 6 cores. The average blade on WetaFXs renderfarm has between 16-64 cores. There is roughly 414,000 frames in the finished film, accounting for half of the film being 48fps and half being 24fps at the final runtime of 192 minutes. Each frame took an average of 20-80 hours to render on WetaFXs blades depending on shot complexity and accounting for the 4K delivery resolution. With that info, we can work out the average: We say that the average Weta blade has 40 cores (average between the 16-64 count). That gives a Weta to PC core ratio of 6.67 We also say that the average render time per frame is 50 hours (average of 20-80) Total render time for Weta: 50 hours x 414,000 frames = 20,700,000 hours To work out how long this would be on the average home PC we must multiply by the core ratio from earlier: 50 hours x 6.67 = 333.5 hours per frame Total render time on a home PC: 333.5 hours x 414,000 frames = 138,069,000 hours, which converted to years is 15,761 DISCLAIMER: This is all an educated guess done for fun based on publicly available technical information about the film and Wetas renderfarm. I’m insanely proud to share this collab between me, my wife ✨chelsea✨, Zedd, ARTECHOUSE, and The Render Network!! This is part of the Submerge group show of 15 genius artists, and all the pieces were rendered at 18K, an absurd resolution, and it literally would not have been possible without the Render Network! This piece began as a drawing in procreate by Chelsea, and after I spent days extruding and cleaning up the model, Chelsea painstakingly dropped in glass textures for every little pane of glass. Then, I rendered more than 100 passes of light animation to create the final result. 🤯 We had an amazing time creating this and it’s exhibiting for the next several months at Artechouse in NYC!! ❤️‍🔥

Krishna on how Anthropic thinks about the platform vs. application layer, and when they decide to build their own products like Claude Code. It’s the question every investor and founder is thinking about: “Most of what we're building is platform. There's so many examples of where a platform can accrue a lot of value, but the customers who are building on that platform actually accrue even more value. We will build our own applications on that same platform where a couple of things are true. Number one, if we feel like we have a vision into where the models are going and we can demonstrate that and create customer value in that, that might be something like Claude Code. The second is thinking about ways to demonstrate value for the ecosystem that others might emulate. If you think about Claude for financial services or Claude for life sciences, these are ways in which we've composed the platform. We're building on the same platform as our customers. That creates a level playing field. We also think that there's so much value that's going to accrue in these areas that our customers can win and we can win as well. So I think of our strategy as mostly horizontal. A lot of the value is going to accrue to the customers that are building on top of it. Our goal is build the best models and then build the products and tools and services that allow that intelligence to proliferate within customers."

On behalf of the government and the people of Plateau State, I appreciate UNICEF for their swift response and the interest they have shown in the calamity that has befallen us, their intervention has given us hope. As a government we will continue to collaborate with all our international partners and make sure we maximize all the services they can render to our people. I also pleaded with them to ensure the people return to their communities by providing things that make life easier to the community like water,education as we start the program of ‘return to the community’. I appreciate them for coming and I look forward to collaborating more with our international partners.

I’m proud of the progress this Rayce Rudeen Foundation team is making right now. We didn’t qualify as well as we wanted at the #Vegas4WideNats, but, with the Four-Wide, I don’t feel it is that important for eliminations. We were runner-up in the first quad (four cars) on a tie (time) and then, we outright won the next round and that makes us feel like we are gaining on it. I told the team that we are way ahead of where we were last week at Phoenix. And that was way ahead of the runs at Gainesville and Pomona. I feel like the team is doing a great job improving with each race, and we are in the window that we can make some small adjustments and pick speed. I think the crew is a little dejected with the final, but from the boss’ perspective, I can see us gaining on it. And we made great progress in just a week. I like seeing them pout a bit right now because of losing, but I’ll get them smiling again and ready for Charlotte. We will focus on the positive moving forward. 🎥 Las Vegas Motor Speedway
