No further details have been provided on the composition of the suspected explosive device, however the investigation is ongoing. -HomeFront- New York: On Saturday, an anti-Islam protest outside of Mayor Mamdani's residence was attacked by counter protesters, which involved terrorists attacking demonstrators with IEDs. Initially, groups of protesters were separated by the NYPD: The group protesting against Mamdani (and against Islam in general) was separated from a group of counterprotesters by pedestrian barriers as is customary for events where protesters have a high likelihood of attacking each other. In this case, two of the counterprotesters arrived with IEDs, lit their fuses, and threw them over to the main protest group, targeting the small group of about a dozen anti-Islam protesters. Both of the IEDs that were thrown failed to detonate, as the impact with the ground extinguished the lit fuses. The suspects were immediately detained at the scene, and a search of the area revealed additional IEDs located in a parked vehicle adjacent to the event. The two suspects have been identified as Emir Balat and Ibrahim Kayumi, both residents of Pennsylvania. More details are expected as the investigation continues. -----END TEARLINE----- Analyst Comments: A bit of back story is needed to explain the context for how important the attack in New York City actually was. The protest that started everything was an "Americans Against Islamification" protest organized by Jake Lang, who has become infamous for going into Islamic strongholds, and holding protests that are intended to inflame tensions. This context may result in many people being tempted to roll their eyes and dismiss this attack due to the history of Lang's protests usually being rather theatrical. For instance, the day before the IED attack on his group he crashed a vigil to the Ayatollah, driving by the event in a Uhaul van with a goat and an American flag. Theatrics aside, however, Saturday's IED attack was a VERY big deal that should not be ignored as a publicity stunt, because it's possible that this attack inadvertently exposed a much wider and more substantial terrorist network. This hunch is due to the composition of the explosive devices themselves...these were not the standard low-grade pipe-bombs that are the usual terrorist go-to for attacks like this. NYPD officials have stated that the devices were comprised of Triacetone triperoxide (TATP), which is a powerful Homemade Explosive (HME) compound that is highly unstable if made in an improvised weapons lab. Speculating a bit regarding this attack, it is unlikely that a terrorist group would build such substantial IEDs solely to target a dozen people at a pop-up protest. These take time to make, and the protest was only announced a few hours before it began. It is possible to make a batch of TATP in a day, however it's very unlikely that the explosives were made for this specific event. And for a bomb maker who seeks to avoid getting the nickname "lefty" these explosive compounds require some level of competency and experience to make. As a result, it's far more likely that these explosives were intended for some other target, before the last-minute protest caused the target to shift to the most emotionally-motivating target. It's possible that a terrorist cell saw Lang's defilement of the Ayatollah's vigil the previous day, and decided to take some of the pre-made explosives to commit a terror attack the next morning when he announced the protest at Mamdani's residence. If this theory bears any weight, it's possible that there are other individuals elsewhere (either acting on their own, or in coordination with more organized groups) which are probably sitting on similar armaments. Exactly where these cells are located is anyone's guess, but since the two attackers themselves travelled all the way from Pennsylvania to conduct the terror attack, these threats are not endemic to New York City alone. //The Wire//2300Z October 2, 2025// //ROUTINE// //BLUF: TERROR ATTACK STRIKES MANCHESTER. FAKE ACTIVE SHOOTER CALLED IN AT NEW JERSEY MILITARY BASE. BOMB THREAT DISRUPTS SERVICES AT MIAMI CHURCH.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE----- -International Events- United Kingdom: This morning a complex terror attack was carried out in Manchester. One assailant began the initial phase of the attack by ramming his vehicle into the perimeter fence at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue. Once the vehicle came to a halt, the attacker exited the vehicle and attempted to gain entry to the facility. Police were immediately on scene, and as the crowd scattered, police were able to corner the assailant. The attacker attempted to detonate a suicide belt that he was wearing, but the S-Belt did not explode (the belt was determined later to be either fake or not a viable explosive). A few moments later, the suspect was shot by armed police, ending the attack. Concerning casualties, 2x people were killed and 3x others wounded during the attack. Analyst Comment: The attacker (who has not yet been identified) was probably targeting Yom Kippur events (which is today). Some time after the incident, two other individuals were reportedly arrested in conjunction with this incident a short distance from the initial attack site. However the status of these individuals is unknown, along with how these arrests are related to the initial attack. -HomeFront- New Jersey: Yesterday afternoon a fake active shooter incident was called in at JB McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst. Local authorities arrested Malika Brittingham (a civilian employee working for the US Navy) for calling in the fake active shooting, which resulted in the base locking down and local schools enacting active shooter protocols. Authorities state that Brittingham called in the active shooter because she was feeling ostracized by her coworkers, and that faking the active shooting would allow her to "trauma bond" with her fellow employees. Washington D.C. - Politics continues as the government remains shut down. This morning, several media outlets claimed to have access to a leaked letter that was sent from the White House to Congress. The letter allegedly contains a notice to Congress that the United States is now involved in a "noninternational armed conflict" regarding central/south American drug cartels. Analyst Comment: If this letter is being accurately described by journalists (which is a big "if"), this is quite the eyebrow-raising declaration. Since the letter itself is being withheld by media groups, there's no way to independently verify the information or if the context is being described accurately. Either way, the phrase "noninternational armed conflict" is an interesting choice of words as it sounds a lot like a war declaration without a war declaration. Until some level of clarification is obtained, it's all conjecture. However, the absolute lowest-hanging fruit of an assessment is that the conflict down south will not be ending or de-escalating anytime soon. Florida: Monday afternoon a man was arrested after making a bomb threat during the Liturgy at St. Andrew Greek Orthodox Church in Miami. This incident occurred on Sunday, however it's just now gaining wider attention due to the details of the case. Local authorities state that a man was clutching a backpack and was acting suspiciously during services on Sunday, which prompted a Deacon to approach the man. Upon making contact, the man handed the backpack to the Deacon, and stated that it was a bomb. The Deacon took the backpack, which was making a ticking noise, and placed off to the side of the nave. The church was not evacuated, and services continued as before. After a few minutes, a loud, piercing alarm was emitted from the suspect (which later was revealed to be the suspect's phone), along with an audible countdown to detonation. After a few more minutes, the man who brought the bomb suddenly ran to where the backpack was being stored, and placed his phone inside the bag. Services were allowed to finish, and at the end the would-be bomber (who remained unsubdued inside the church throughout the incident), stood up and shouted Allahu Akbar before departing. The man was arrested the following day, and was subsequently identified as Isaac Lopez, a Cuban national. After some time the bomb squad cleared the device as being fake, and the suspect was booked only on misdemeanor charges, and held under a $7,650 bond. No word yet on if any federal terrorism charges will be filed. -----END TEARLINE----- Analyst Comments: If this incident had been real, this would have been a mass casualty event and MANY lives would likely have been lost. While hindsight is 20/20, theses types of incidents have already become far too common for anyone to take these threats lightly. As a reminder, a very similar situation occurred at St. Michael's Abbey in California less than a month ago, in which a mentally ill man with a vehicle full of weapons entered the Church and told the Priest that he was there to conduct a mass shooting. In the interest of time, we cannot wait months to examine every minute detail of this case; this is not to judge or nitpick the actions of the day callously, but to rapidly understand this event so that lives could be saved, if next time the bomb is real. Speculating a bit regarding this specific case, it is possible that Church leadership thought they were dealing with a potential mental illness situation, and that making a fuss would make the situation worse. This is becoming very common during church services all around the US, so this is understandable. However, all bets are off when someone says "I have a bomb", and their backpack is ticking. At that point we transition into the realm of counterterrorism, which many Church staff members are simply not experienced in managing (understandably so). In that respect, a basic understanding of what to do during a bomb threat is crucial. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Administration has produced both a Bomb Threat Guide and a Bomb Threat Checklist for those to use who do not have a counterterrorism background. These guides may be of use for Churches who do not have experience with such threats, and are linked below. But again, in the interest of time a quick and dirty explanation of what to do is as follows: 1. If a bomb is discovered DO NOT touch or move it. 2. Calmly but immediately vacate the premises. 3. Isolate the suspected explosive device (i.e. prevent others from going near it). 4. If the terrorist is on site and is an active and unchallenged threat, those who are so able must do what is necessary to save life and limb. 5. Once clear of the structure, call 911 as soon as possible to report the incident. Regarding the potential attacker, whatever means necessary should be undertaken to prevent the terrorist from re-gaining access to the bomb; allowing a terrorist to tinker with a potential explosive device in a packed Church is the least desirable possibility, and should be avoided at all costs. Considering that rapid, unplanned evacuations are not something that Churches may be familiar with, it will be up to the Deacons or the Priest to organize an efficient and calm evacuation outside. A good rule of thumb is that the blast zone for an IED is always bigger than you think it will be, and flying debris will be a threat for a considerable distance. As such, do not simply mill about immediately outside the front doors, but transition to a safe zone some distance away from the structure if able. If a scenario arises where a Church official is handed a potential explosive device, place the device on the ground as gently as possible and rapidly vacate the area. Homemade explosives are usually unstable and likely to go off with the slightest provocation, so moving the device at all is ill advised while the Church is being evacuated. Parishioners should refrain from using their cell phones until clear of the blast zone, as if the bomb has a radio-based trigger the use of cell phones might prematurely detonate the device. For any churches that have on-site security that use radios, the use of radio comms is also not recommended for the same reasons. Specifically with regards to the special considerations presented to religious institutions, and also understanding that services are a Holy time for worship, if there ever were a more pressing moment to interrupt a Priest during services, it would be when there is a clear and present bomb threat actively unfolding inside the Church. Florida: Monday afternoon a man was arrested after making a bomb threat during the Liturgy at St. Andrew Greek Orthodox Church in Miami. This incident occurred on Sunday, however it's just now gaining wider attention due to the details of the case. Local authorities state that a man was clutching a backpack and was acting suspiciously during services on Sunday, which prompted a Deacon to approach the man. Upon making contact, the man handed the backpack to the Deacon, and stated that it was a bomb. The Deacon took the backpack, which was making a ticking noise, and placed off to the side of the nave. The church was not evacuated, and services continued as before. After a few minutes, a loud, piercing alarm was emitted from the suspect (which later was revealed to be the suspect's phone), along with an audible countdown to detonation. After a few more minutes, the man who brought the bomb suddenly ran to where the backpack was being stored, and placed his phone inside the bag. Services were allowed to finish, and at the end the would-be bomber (who remained unsubdued inside the church throughout the incident), stood up and shouted Allahu Akbar before departing. The man was arrested the following day, and was subsequently identified as Isaac Lopez, a Cuban national. After some time the bomb squad cleared the device as being fake, and the suspect was booked only on misdemeanor charges, and held under a $7,650 bond. No word yet on if any federal terrorism charges will be filed. -----END TEARLINE----- Analyst Comments: If this incident had been real, this would have been a mass casualty event and MANY lives would likely have been lost. While hindsight is 20/20, theses types of incidents have already become far too common for anyone to take these threats lightly. As a reminder, a very similar situation occurred at St. Michael's Abbey in California less than a month ago, in which a mentally ill man with a vehicle full of weapons entered the Church and told the Priest that he was there to conduct a mass shooting. In the interest of time, we cannot wait months to examine every minute detail of this case; this is not to judge or nitpick the actions of the day callously, but to rapidly understand this event so that lives could be saved, if next time the bomb is real. Speculating a bit regarding this specific case, it is possible that Church leadership thought they were dealing with a potential mental illness situation, and that making a fuss would make the situation worse. This is becoming very common during church services all around the US, so this is understandable. However, all bets are off when someone says "I have a bomb", and their backpack is ticking. At that point we transition into the realm of counterterrorism, which many Church staff members are simply not experienced in managing (understandably so). In that respect, a basic understanding of what to do during a bomb threat is crucial. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Administration has produced both a Bomb Threat Guide and a Bomb Threat Checklist for those to use who do not have a counterterrorism background. These guides may be of use for Churches who do not have experience with such threats, and are linked below. But again, in the interest of time a quick and dirty explanation of what to do is as follows: 1. If a bomb is discovered DO NOT touch or move it. 2. Calmly but immediately vacate the premises. 3. Isolate the suspected explosive device (i.e. prevent others from going near it). 4. If the terrorist is on site and is an active and unchallenged threat, those who are so able must do what is necessary to save life and limb. 5. Once clear of the structure, call 911 as soon as possible to report the incident. Regarding the potential attacker, whatever means necessary should be undertaken to prevent the terrorist from re-gaining access to the bomb; allowing a terrorist to tinker with a potential explosive device in a packed Church is the least desirable possibility, and should be avoided at all costs. Considering that rapid, unplanned evacuations are not something that Churches may be familiar with, it will be up to the Deacons or the Priest to organize an efficient and calm evacuation outside. A good rule of thumb is that the blast zone for an IED is always bigger than you think it will be, and flying debris will be a threat for a considerable distance. As such, do not simply mill about immediately outside the front doors, but transition to a safe zone some distance away from the structure if able. If a scenario arises where a Church official is handed a potential explosive device, place the device on the ground as gently as possible and rapidly vacate the area. Homemade explosives are usually unstable and likely to go off with the slightest provocation, so moving the device at all is ill advised while the Church is being evacuated. Parishioners should refrain from using their cell phones until clear of the blast zone, as if the bomb has a radio-based trigger the use of cell phones might prematurely detonate the device. For any churches that have on-site security that use radios, the use of radio comms is also not recommended for the same reasons. Specifically with regards to the special considerations presented to religious institutions, and also understanding that services are a Holy time for worship, if there ever were a more pressing moment to interrupt a Priest during services, it would be when there is a clear and present bomb threat actively unfolding inside the Church. When Lawyers Try to Spin Science: The Messy Interpretation of Gunshot Residue in UgandaVsMollyKatanga. We’ve been following this case for more than 2 years now. The major reason for that is to bring hundreds of thousands of people into the courtroom and show them the underbelly of the Ugandan criminal justice system, with the hope of pushing for reforms. The case is now in its final stages, with both sides making submissions on a no case to answer. This is where things get rather interesting and the interpretation of science becomes crucial. Walk with me here as I explain: See, the main accused person, Mrs Molly Katanga is said to have shot her now deceased husband using his gun. Her defense team says Mr Henry Katanga likely shot himself after beating his wife to near death (a key state witness said she could have died if she hadn’t got urgent medical care). Anyway, part of the investigations for gunshot crimes is to run a test for Gunshot residue. There are components of gunpowder that are spread in the vicinity of a discharged gun and if one is within 2 meters or so of the discharged gun, they’ll most likely have it on them. GSR has both organic and inorganic components. Traditionally, it’s the testing for inorganic components like Lead, Barium, Antimony that’s widely done and widely accepted in courts. But there’s methods for testing for Organic GSR (OGSR). Components of GSR include items in propellant like nitroglycerin, diphenylamine and some stabilizers. The methods for running and interpreting OGSR results are not so standardized (internationally) and the whole process of interpretation is fraught with controversy. Reason: these same components will exist in everyday items like perfumes, cosmetics, fertilizers etc so finding the OGSR signature might not be that specific. But also, they disappear (vaporize) so fast. Anyway, because of those reasons, OGSR has found difficulty being used in courts allover the world. Enter Uganda and the case of UgandaVMollyKatanga; The state presented their 12th witness, a one Dr Jaffar Kisitu (PhD). He’s the country’s expert on this. He told Lady Justice Rosette Comfort Kania that he tested for organic components of GSR on Mrs Katanga’s hands, dress, her daughter’s dress etc. Court heard that he’s the first such expert ANYWHERE in this region to show up in court and present OGSR evidence. When asked for the protocol he followed, its standardization and use elsewhere, he said he used the protocol used by a student of his who was studying (not GSR analysis but) soil samples in Amuru district. The defense says he didn’t run these tests because he had no swabs to begin with; the swabs that were taken from Mrs Katanga having been fully used up by the DNA analysts. But that’s not why we are here. That’ll be for the Judge to decide. The reason I’m writing this piece is to show you the hustle in interpretation of results in as far as it relates to inferred guilt. The hope here is to put Judiciary Uganda, lawyers and citizens on alert that while we are embracing science (forensics) to decide some of the crimes, misinterpretation and misrepresentation of results is a real possibility. For this, I’ll use courtroom video as well as submissions from both sides in this case. Frame 1: after a back and forth with the witness that included the Judge, defense attorneys and the prosecution, Mr Elison Karuhanga asks PW12: “Dr Kisitu, under oath, are you saying you can use an OGSR result to infer someone fired a firearm?” PW12: “You cannot use OGSR to infer that someone fired a firearm.” Fast forward to prosecution submissions, page 14 and 15 (see frame 2): “the presence of those GSR components on the hands of A1 clearly points to her as the person who shot or discharged the firearm in issue”. Not what the expert said. Defense submissions in rejoinder: pages 16,17,18: prosecution is misrepresenting their witness, no swabs, no match. (See frames 3&4) Deliberate from the State or a mistake?

🐰 I have a friend, and he’s just a regular office worker. When I look at that, I think it’s really impressive. That friend always says to me, “Ah… Seonghwa, it must be really hard for you.” And I tell him, “The work you do yourself always feels the hardest. Rather than comparing or analyzing, it’s just that what you do feels the hardest. So let’s just be thankful for the days we can meet like this.” As I get older, I have friends from Jinju that I’ve been with for 12 years. No - 11 years. We all went to different schools, but somehow we’ve stayed close until now. Our group chat is called “Animal Crossing”, and up until about three years ago, we met often. Until just three years ago… what was it…? We would at least meet once during the holidays, but in these past three years, there’s always been one or two people who couldn’t make it, or sometimes I couldn’t make it. It’s gotten harder and harder to gather. So now we say, “Well, at least it’s lucky if we can see each other at someone’s wedding.” Because I travel abroad often, I might not be able to go, and since there are friends in Jinju too, when they get married, they’ll live there, right? When I think about that, I realize, “Ah, I might not be able to go.” So it’s a bit sad, but it also means that each of us is settling into our own place in life. Someday… That’s why I like a certain line from a drama: “When we meet again, let’s finish the conversations we couldn’t finish.” I really liked that line. And now each of our lives is different. For me, I now have my members, and for my friends, they’ve probably found someone even closer to them.

This question and answer from the Pentagon briefing this morning was so thorough and interesting. My friend Jerry Dunleavy IV 🇺🇸 asked a tough, but substantive question. You can ask those in power real questions without it being a "gotcha" or trap.... Dunleavy: “As part of the justification for the war against Iran, the White House has laid out in fairly comprehensive fashion that Iran — the Iranian regime is 47 years of terrorism aimed at the us, including pointing to the IRGC’s provision of weapons and efforts to help kill Americans in Iraq. The Pentagon in 2019 assessed Iran was responsible for the deaths of at least 603 service members in Iraq, but there hasn’t been a similar accounting — public accounting by Iran’s role helping the Taliban in Afghanistan. And that also hasn’t been part of the White House’s public argument. I was wondering if you could speak to Iran’s role in helping the Taliban during the war in Afghanistan. And, chairman, as — as you and the Secretary eloquently spoke, about, 13 U.S. service members have been killed so far during Operation Epic Fury. I was wondering what lessons have been learned from those deaths, both from Iranian strikes from an aircraft refueling accident? How are those lessons being applied to the current conflict, and how are those lessons going to be applied to a potential conflict in Indopacom?” Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Caine: “Thank you.” Secretary of War Pete Hegseth: “Well, thank you for the question and it’s — it’s true. In a town that can have a very short memory, President Trump does not. He remembers what this regime — Iranian regime was founded on, what their declaration has been from the beginning death to America, death to Israel. They’ve stated that. they’ve attended to in every way, try to accomplish that, killing Americans in any theater they can. Embassies for a long for quite a long time. In Iraq, that was the deadliest weapon was the EFP, the explosively formed penetrator. I was there when that tactic and technique started to emerge, and the realization was it wasn’t just jihadis putting together one, five, five rounds, daisy chained. It was an entire state, a country with its apparatus — apparatus able to mold steel in a way that was specifically designed to penetrate American armor and kill Americans. The same goes in Afghanistan. Name the Islamist enemy, whether they are Sunni or Shia, because this is a Shia regime, Sunni or Shia, and Iran’s been willing to harbor them as long as that group is willing to try to kill Americans. So, the enemy of their enemy has been their friend as well. And the Islamist world. So, Iran, whether it’s Iraq, whether it’s Afghanistan, whether it’s around the world, has been targeting Americans and what they wanted in this context — and what President Trump would not tolerate — is a regime of that nature being closer and closer to nuclear capabilities, a capability they would have said they would want to use. And we all believe what our enemies say they would do if they got the most dangerous weapon in the world. So, it’s been across every theater that Iran’s been — been a threat to America. And sometimes we have to remind folks of that. But thank goodness we have a commander in chief who, on behalf of this country has internalized that and said, hey, we’re going to do something about it.” Caine; “Jerry, I do want to talk about the lessons learned question because it’s important to me. I won’t share particular tactical lessons. And the KC-135 incident is under investigation. But I do want to talk about how I think about this and how we think about it. And this is something that I’m pretty passionate about. I believe the Joint Force has to be a very fast learning organization early, often and always. And so, in each case, both at the strategic, operational, and tactical level, we’ve charged a joint force to look at themselves and say, what was our plan? Well, first, did we have a plan yes or no? The answer is always yes because we plan for literally everything. Did we execute our plan, yes or no? If we did, did it work? If not, why not? If we didn’t execute our plan but did something better, what’s the lesson learned associated with that? And then how do we quickly capture those lessons after every loss or every engagement, and quickly adopt those lessons, and then share them across the entirety of the joint force. And inside the joint staff, we’ve tasked our J7 Directorate, under the lead of General Lieutenant General Laszewski, a United States Marine, to be extremely entrepreneurial in harvesting and capturing those lessons in a proactive and not reactive way. In fact, we’ve got teammates from the J7 who are now spread out across the CENTCOM theater, both here in the States and forward, to ensure that in every opportunity, we do not miss a chance to grab that lesson and quickly accelerate it into the practice that we adopt inside the joint force so that if there’s a loss or if there’s something that we can learn from, that we learn it not only in the CENTCOM, aor, but we adapted across all of the combatant commands, not just Indopacom, and it’s across all of the warfighting functions. Israel Is Beginning To Choke On Its Own Lies Netanyahu has confirmed reports that Israel plans an extreme escalation in Gaza which will entail the total military occupation of the entire enclave and the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians, which the Israeli spin machine has termed “voluntary migration”. To be clear, anyone who says the expulsion of Palestinians from Gaza would be “voluntary” is lying. Starving a population and deliberately making their land uninhabitable is exactly the same as forcing them out at gunpoint. Saying “leave or you’ll starve” is not meaningfully different from saying “leave or I’ll shoot you in the head”. Israel’s planned mass expulsion will be as forced and involuntary as any in recorded history. President Trump has fully signed off on this move, washing his hands of the mass atrocity he is cosigning by telling the press that it’s going to be “pretty much up to Israel.” Trump is lying. It’s up to him. That’s why more than 600 former senior Israeli security officials from Mossad and Shin Bet just sent Trump a letter urging him to compel Netanyahu to make peace in Gaza.
