A bullet wound brought Serenget to us – found alone in Tsavo West National Park a year ago, hobbling on her left leg. Nearly seven months of stockade rest and repeated treatment by the SWT/KWS Tsavo Mobile Vet Unit followed. In February she walked out to join the herd, making her first two friends by evening. She still takes her milk her own way, letting a Keeper pour it into the tip of her trunk – and today she turns three. Happy birthday, Serenget. We tried many different tactics – a bottle, a bucket, different formulas – but she flatly refused every attempt. Then we finally discovered a solution: a Keeper would pour some milk into the tip of her trunk. Serenget would signal when it was full to the brim, then tilt the milk into her mouth. We were all on guard. KWS Vet Dr Limo wasn't sure if new rescue Serenget would recover from the bullet wound to her leg, but we weren't about to give up. And so, Serenget became a patient at our Voi 'hospital wing' where she was prescribed bed rest. We were determined to make it as pleasant as possible for her, filling her stockade with a lush bed of hay and fresh grewia branches. Thankfully, she just seemed happy to be in a place that was entirely, safely, hers. Slowly, the shy, small elephant who once hid in the far corner started to approach the Keepers – a tentative step forward soon turned into an extended trunk, before she finally felt comfortable standing beside them. Soon, she became a great favourite of the Keepers. Throughout the day, everyone found a reason to linger by her stockade, saying comforting words or blowing into her trunk. Despite her initial shyness, Serenget also proved to be quite social and always greeted a familiar face with a friendly trunk-first hello. Her story in full:

Serenget is always the last to finish her milk. She is one of the younger orphans at our Voi Reintegration Unit in Tsavo and she has her own way of doing things. Rather than gulping from the bottle like the others, she takes it slowly – the Keepers fill the very tip of her trunk with milk, so she can pour every drop carefully into her mouth at her own pace. Two bottles takes her a good while. Every orphan drinks up to 24 litres a day, at whatever pace suits them. A gift of milk from our Wish List can help feed an orphan like Serenget:

As it turned out, the situation was worse than we could have ever imagined. The two-year-old orphan had been shot in the leg and could barely hobble a few steps before halting in pain. When impala strayed onto the path down to the feeding area, she saw them off before the first group had even been called – ears flared, clearing the way so the little ones could drink in peace (or perhaps fearing they might try and get her milk)! Lamuu is unrecognisable from the calf we rescued and milk only tells part of the story. We rescued her on 4 January 2026 from the northern coast of Kenya. She was around 17 months old, alone, with a snare wound around her front left leg that had sliced through an artery. The snare had been working as a tourniquet – KWS Vet Dr Lawi performed emergency surgery in the field just to keep her alive. Five months on, at our Kaluku Neonate Unit, the ring wound around her leg has healed thanks to daily wound care. She's put on weight thanks to three-hourly feeds and she's bonded closely with her Keepers, following her Keeper Lekoli everywhere – his shadow, our team calls her. In fact, we often find her loitering around the pool, just waiting for the other orphans to vacate so she can have it all to herself. As the herd headed into the bush this afternoon, Akina noticed Rokka lagging behind in the water. She about-turned to join her friend, and the two girls enjoyed a splashy show-off session. The snare severed the tip of her trunk before her rescue, taking the two 'fingers' she would normally use to grasp her food. She has been inventing workarounds ever since. On her very first day out with the Voi herd, Ashanti dropped to her knees and began grazing straight from the ground with her mouth. The older orphans looked on, seemingly bemused, as she worked out a way to feed herself. Today, she can scoop pellets from the trough with her mouth or flip lucerne into it with a front foot. I genuinely cannot understand how someone can watch this story and still stand there, looking at two women, and somehow decide that the wrong one is the victim. On one side, you have a girl (Yıldız) who has been mistreated her entire life. Since the moment she was born, she was treated like a sacrifice for a conflict she was never even part of and later we find out that this conflict never even existed. Her right to study was taken from her. She was pushed into a marriage at a very young age just imagine being six, seven, eight years old, living in fear of being tied to someone you don’t even know. She was treated like a servant in her own home, by the very people she thought were her family. And just when she gets close to the happiness she dreamed of, the man she was engaged to shows up with another wife. She gets mistreated by that wife, by his family, and even (unintentionally) by him, because he was trying to run away from his own feelings, and that only caused her more heartbreak. The whole world was literally against her. She fought through all of that, only to find out in the end that everything she suffered for was based on something that wasn’t even real. Her entire life was built on a lie. That she isn’t even part of that family that she has literally no one in this world. Now on the other side… You have a girl (Melek) who, yes, was taken from her biological mother but she was raised by loving parents. She had everything anyone could wish for: education, freedom, a happy childhood, a healthy environment. She lived her life, fell in love, went out, made choices and no one questioned her, no one controlled her. And then what did she do? She found out that her man was engaged to another woman before marrying her (and even saw him marry her) and instead of holding on to her dignity, she chose to stay, to fight for a man who lied to her, to hold onto a marriage he tried to end multiple times. She used her unborn child to keep him tied to her. She lied constantly, and her excuse was that she was “protecting her marriage” a marriage that was already broken from the moment Serhat removed that ring at the airport in episode one. She tried to hand Yıldız (a woman who had already suffered enough) over to dangerous people. Then she found out the truth about her own birth (that her father ra*ped her mother.)And still no empathy. No moment of humanity toward her own mother. All she cared about was herself. And even though none of this had anything to do with Yıldız, she still found a way to blame it on her. Instead of holding her father accountable, she went and made a deal with him to get rid of Yıldız. She literally made a deal with the devil just to hurt Yıldız one more time. And after all of that… you want me to feel sorry for her? You want me to call her a victim? I honestly cannot believe we are living on the same planet with people who see this and still say, “she’s the victim.” Not morally. Not logically. Not emotionally. The day she first opened her eyes, the day she met everyone in the Game Development Club — that is the day she chose to call her birthday. Not because someone told her to, but because she decided on her own to hold that day close. One month after her rescue, Zuri is firmly part of the family. When she wakes up each morning, Wamata knocks on her stable door. By the time the Keepers let her out, a queue of older girls has formed, waiting to take her out to the forest each morning. This game never fails to make me cry. Dorothy never wanted revenge. She just wanted somebody to recognize her sacrifices for the Ark. She was heartbroken because she was abandoned. Her friends moved on, and she couldn’t. That's ok! It just shows how human she is, and how being so human brings out all of her flaws so naturally that it hits perfectly. She just needed headpats and praise. When I first read Ark Guardian, I saw all of her struggles. She was keeping it all together as the leader of the squad, and losing all of her precious people one by one broke her. The wound the Ark gave her was the last straw. I’m so happy I never lost faith in her. I knew she wasn’t meant to be a bad person, she’s a hero and will always be one. This chapter was so emotional as fuck. BURNINGUM IS THE TRUE MVP HERE.

After talking about how SMN got their first win during the UFO promotions, they kept emphasizing that this is only the beginning for them. But then Sung Sikyung reminded us that this is already Hiichan’s third debut, and that she’s been in the industry for 12 years… It really made me think about Hiichan’s journey. She debuted in AKB at just 12 years old, but back then, she never really got close to senbatsu. So she challenged herself with PD48, successfully debuted with IZ*ONE, and finally got her name out there. After IZ*ONE ended, she returned to AKB, this time as a senbatsu member and eventually even a center. Then, as she approached her 10th year in the industry, instead of simply staying where she was already comfortable and established, she decided to challenge herself all over again, leaving her home in Japan, returning to Korea, and redebuting from scratch with SAY MY NAME. And she didn’t stop there. She continued working hard on her Korean, took the TOPIK exam and achieved Level 5, and even got a Korean driver’s license (though she got this right before IZ*ONE ended). It really feels like she didn’t just come back to Korea to redebut. She genuinely committed herself to building a new chapter of her life there. It’s been such a long and unusual journey for Hiichan. Every time she reached a new stage in her career, she somehow found the courage to challenge herself again rather than settle for what she had already achieved. I have so much respect for her hard work, courage, and growth over all these years. Truly admirable. And to think I’ve been supporting her for almost 8 years now… 🥹 It’s been quite a journey for me too...
