On Wednesday, Chris Hipkins said the party would release more policy after the election, before quickly walking back his apparent Freudian slip and claiming it would be after the budget. On Friday, Willie Jackson was asked the same question. He began to say “just after the election,” then caught himself and changed it to “two to three months before the election.” Labour clearly has serious problems with its policy platform. More concerning, however, is the strong impression that it is keeping controversial policies up its sleeve, ready to release them only if it wins the election.

Standing on the stage with Labour Party deputy leader Carmel Sepuloni, other labour MP’s, John Tamihere and Rawiri Waititi, Willie Jackson announces Labour will now work with the Māori party to get rid the govt - directly contradicting his leader, Chris Hipkins. “We will work with the Greens, the Māori party whoever in terms of getting rid of this govt… it’s time to put a strategy in place”. So to be clear, just 3 days ago Hipkins was adamant Te Pāti Maori was being left to sort their own issues out… now they are working together and developing a strategy.

Chris Hipkins must be tearing his hair out listening to interviews with Labour’s coalition partner, the Greens, where their policies and numbers are being properly challenged. Case in point: Marama Davidson’s nightmare interview with HDPA on the Greens’ proposed synthetic fertiliser ban — a policy with the potential to wreak havoc on farmers and the economy.

Train wreck interview from Chris Hipkins on RNZ this morning. Unbelievably, Hipkins suggested that one of the reasons the CV-TAG advice wasn’t shared at the relevant press conference, was that it had already gone on too long. He then shifted responsibility back onto Ashley Bloomfield. Hipkins went on to claim that the decision not to make the CV-TAG advice public (speak openly about it) was not his. The press gallery now has an open goal: Simply ask Hipkins whose decision it was within government not to publicly discuss the CV-TAG advice. This is getting much worse.

Another great presser from the PM. Luxon now looks very comfortable being more direct and calling out the incompetence of the opposition, which is great to see 12 months out from the election. You could almost feel the press gallery nodding in agreement as the PM described the utter chaos a cabinet consisting of Hipkins, Swarbrick, Waititi and Ngarewa-Packer would bring.

Just 24 hrs after Hipkins appeared on MATA with Mihingarangi Forbes and failed to commit to working with Te Pāti Māori to change the govt, Willie Jackson and Carmel Sepuloni took matters into their own hands and announced Labour will be working with Te Pāti Māori and “it’s time to put a strategy in place”.

Hipkins says Auckland’s suburban hospitality businesses are booming, and the CBD’s struggle is down to commercial enterprise, completely oblivious to the devastating impact empty offices would have on the hospitality sector.

Chris Hipkins has now admitted that the party’s flagship promise of “three free doctors’ visits a year” might not involve seeing a doctor at all. According to Labour’s own policy, these so-called “free doctors’ visits” can be used with nurse practitioners instead. The party openly admits this, yet it cannot even say how many of those visits will actually be with a real doctor. Meanwhile, Labour is marketing the policy as “free doctors’ visits” to win votes, only to quietly concede it’s just another primary care appointment. What doesn’t change, however, is that taxpayers will still be forced to pay for it through the party’s proposed capital gains tax.

Good grief. This is a must listen! Labour’s Transport spokesperson Tangi Utikere has had an absolute shocker of an interview this morning on ZB with Heather du Plessis-Allan. Either he wasn’t across the numbers, Labour announced a major policy with zero modelling, or they’re too embarrassed to reveal the real cost to taxpayers — and how few people will actually save the amount they’re claiming. When HDPA pressed him on how many commuters would actually hit the $20 weekly fare cap, and what the true subsidy burden looks like (already ~87% on some services), Utikere dodged, deflected, and just repeated preset talking points. A two and a half year wait for this half baked cost of living “relief” stunt and Labour still has no idea what it’ll actually cost or how many people will truly benefit — is insane. Absolute amateur hour from Chris Hipkins and the Labour Party.

Labour leader Chris Hipkins had claimed at a presser yesterday that no one in Auckland had raised the issue of the Covid 19 lock downs with him. Newstalk ZB, said Chris, were the only people still concerned with this. This remark earnt him the ire of presenter Heather Du Plessis-Allan. She said Hipkins's words implied the broadcaster was conducting an ideological campaign against Labour. A suggestion she angrily rejected. Heather wants you to tell Mr Hipkins that she is not the only one who is still angry about the lock downs. So if you see him around, feel free to do that.

This is just awful optics for Chris Hipkins and Labour. Excluding the COVID years, this appears to be the first time in at least a decade that the Labour Party has not had a stall at Fieldays. This will come back to haunt them on the campaign trail. National Fieldays is more than a farming event it’s a major exhibition and celebration of small business, technology, the environment, innovation, investment, and rural New Zealand as a whole. By turning up with little more than a token appearance, Labour is effectively sending a clear message to the rural community: we don’t really care about you. It will be interesting to see whether the media presses Hipkins on this when he makes his brief visit today — assuming he actually turns up.

Eventually Hipkins admits to being a socialist or as he puts it, someone who thinks there is "a more active role for the state". Not that Mr Espiner would agree of course, but Mamdani is really a communist. So IMHO is Chris Hipkins. So far as NZ's pluralistic democracy will allow him to be anyway. The "more active role for the state" he wants is one that in his mind doesn't have any limits. Meaning he and his ilk will gradually, bit by bit by bit by bit, drag NZ into communism. If he is given the chance. Some would say we're already well on the way to this destination, or maybe even there already. In New Zealand, the Fabian or "frog in the slowly heating pot" strategy is working just the way it is meant to.

This is despite a Royal Commission finding that Auckland was locked down for too long, official advice was ignored, and maintaining the Auckland boundary over summer was neither necessary nor remotely practical. This is on top of Hipkins’ own atrocious track record of ignoring facts, being economical with the truth and failing to correct the public record. Nothing short of disgraceful.
