Unbelievably, Hipkins suggested that one of the reasons the CV-TAG advice wasn’t shared at the relevant press conference, was that it had already gone on too long. He then shifted responsibility back onto Ashley Bloomfield. Hipkins went on to claim that the decision not to make the CV-TAG advice public (speak openly about it) was not his. The press gallery now has an open goal: Simply ask Hipkins whose decision it was within government not to publicly discuss the CV-TAG advice. This is getting much worse.

Another great presser from the PM. Luxon now looks very comfortable being more direct and calling out the incompetence of the opposition, which is great to see 12 months out from the election. You could almost feel the press gallery nodding in agreement as the PM described the utter chaos a cabinet consisting of Hipkins, Swarbrick, Waititi and Ngarewa-Packer would bring.

Good grief. This is a must listen! Labour’s Transport spokesperson Tangi Utikere has had an absolute shocker of an interview this morning on ZB with Heather du Plessis-Allan. Either he wasn’t across the numbers, Labour announced a major policy with zero modelling, or they’re too embarrassed to reveal the real cost to taxpayers — and how few people will actually save the amount they’re claiming. This is just awful optics for Chris Hipkins and Labour. Excluding the COVID years, this appears to be the first time in at least a decade that the Labour Party has not had a stall at Fieldays. This will come back to haunt them on the campaign trail. National Fieldays is more than a farming event it’s a major exhibition and celebration of small business, technology, the environment, innovation, investment, and rural New Zealand as a whole. By turning up with little more than a token appearance, Labour is effectively sending a clear message to the rural community: we don’t really care about you. It will be interesting to see whether the media presses Hipkins on this when he makes his brief visit today — assuming he actually turns up.

This is despite a Royal Commission finding that Auckland was locked down for too long, official advice was ignored, and maintaining the Auckland boundary over summer was neither necessary nor remotely practical. This is on top of Hipkins’ own atrocious track record of ignoring facts, being economical with the truth and failing to correct the public record. Nothing short of disgraceful.
