Australia is a country and is an island, there is no discussion about that. Also, as any country, it belongs to a continent where there are other countries as well such as New Zealand in this case. Depending on what part of the world you went to school to, you call that continent Australia or Oceania.

Of course the whole world sees Americas continent as a whole. Why the hell would north America be "America". Even Américo Vespucio (Who actually the continent is name after) came actually to central/south America. It doesn't make any sense.

Why tf is Australia the island not counted? Even if it’s part of the dubious Australian continent (which has multiple names), the island itself of Australia should still count.

Need to look at what an island is. If you have a land border you aren’t an island. Indonesia has a land border with Malaysia and PNG. PNG with Indonesia UK with Ireland Madagascar is fine, Japan, Philippines too. But lots of these aren’t island countries.
