The government has said that medical interns will be paid the same amount, UGX 1,268, 929 which is subject to tax resulting to a net pay of UGX 1 million. To me, this is only a short term solution. What happens to the upcoming cohorts? Shall medical interns have to go on strike every time just to get paid? We must end this cycle once and for all. Let the government scrap the National Health Policy that was sneaked in and come up with a properly drafted, permanent solution to the remuneration and welfare of medical interns. And let’s be clear: the demand is UGX 4 million, not UGX 1 million. We need a lasting solution, not temporary fixes every time doctors and interns protest.

Today, the pre-medical interns who were denied deployment by government have filed a case against the Attorney general and DGHS Ministry of Health- Uganda in Kampala high court to challenge the decision against which these qualifying medical graduates were excluded. There is indeed no doubt that this decision was illogical, unfair and reckless. Our prayer is that the judges Judiciary Uganda review this decision and order for immediate deployment of all medical interns. I agree, Intern doctors should be ranked above DEI Pharma, Atiak Sugar, Lubowa, and Inspire Coffee – which have and continue to consume billions. While those other are (unnecessary) promises for the future, intern doctors are presently real in the lives of ordinary Ugandans. As has been said plenty of times, it is not uncommon to find a public medical facility manned entirely by interns. Their labor cannot to be for free. In fact, interns is the language of exploitation. These are actual doctors – only new in the field. Thanks Dr Obuku (Ekwaro A. Obuku)

While this seems acted, it is true that it is dangerous to put our lives in the hands of unpaid and demotivated medical interns. This is not just about them, it is a national health risk. There is a lot of money wasted on luxury, useless things and useless people. We can’t say we’ve failed to find money for overworked needy young people entrusted with citizens’ lives. Reservation in medical education is a ticking time bomb that will destroy the foundations of healthcare in this country. When meritorious students are unable to secure admission in the medical field while undeserving candidates become doctors, India's healthcare system is bound to suffer. A system that grants medical seats to students with lower scores while high-achieving candidates struggle, even with exceptional percentiles, is destined to fail. Medicine is a profession where competency should be the sole criterion. It is a matter of life and death. If this continues, we are heading towards a medical system where degrees are devalued, trust in doctors erodes, and the public ultimately suffers. Interns are being forced to eat from the hostel mess even though the food quality is so bad that students have suffered colonic edema, intestinal perforation, vomiting and diarrhoea Many had shifted to an FSSAI approved tiffin service due to poor mess hygiene and irregular duty hours. But on 19 June, when the tiffin provider came, the vice principal seized the food and the principal grabbed the provider by the collar and started shouting When the interns went to talk, they were blamed for not intervening during the scuffle. The principal then issued a 2 day hostel eviction notice to the entire intern batch and threatened to withhold their June stipend. This is not just harassment. It is a complete misuse of authority These are MBBS doctors in their mandatory internship, not hostages.

Zimbabwean Member of Parliament for Chinhoyi, Leslie Mhangwa, was speaking at a Workers’ Day event when the microphone was rudely taken away from him by ZANUPF thugs who are part of the intelligence infrastructure. He was saved by members of the public who were listening to his address. Now, if a Member of Parliament is not allowed to speak at a public event addressing issues that are affecting workers, and the microphone is violently taken away from him simply because he has said that the inflation rate is not matching wage increases, and that is seen as a threat to the government of the day, what kind of society has Zimbabwe become? What about an ordinary person like myself or others? What would happen to us if this can happen to an elected official, a Member of Parliament who is speaking to the constituents who elected him, yet is not allowed to do so? These are the things that have turned Zimbabwe into a banana republic. These are the actions that continue to delegitimise our country’s standing internationally. You cannot have mob justice. You cannot have a mob turning up at an official event where a Member of Parliament has been given the floor to speak and is then treated like this.

When I talk about the total collapse of Zimbabwe’s public healthcare system, some think I am just politicking. This happened in the early hours of this morning—this young man brought his mother to Zimbabwe’s biggest public health hospital group, Parirenyatwa, and there was nobody to help him. Some will only understand this when it lands on their doorstep. These are the direct consequences of corruption, for every dollar stolen, there is a price to be paid by ordinary citizens. The silence when this slow genocide is happening is tacit approval of it, thousands of Zimbabweans are dying while the looting carries on!

This is moral injury. — Moral injury. The pain of knowing what the right thing is for the patient, but being unable to do that because of systemic barriers. And over time, this wears you down. I have seen so many people leave the profession because it has eroded their sense of purpose, their love for the job. And we take a Hippocratic oath to do no harm.
