People care deeply about social status—specifically, the esteem in which they’re held by those whose opinions they value. That’s often the real reason people pursue wealth. It’s not just about having money for its own sake, but about converting it into status. In fact, many people care more about how they’re perceived than about the actual number in their bank account. One study found that sociometric status—being respected and admired by your peers—is a stronger predictor of well-being than socioeconomic status. Put simply, people who are well-liked and valued by their social circle tend to be happier than people who merely earn a high income. People with higher sociometric status—being respected, liked, and influential in their immediate groups—tend to be happier on average than people whose advantage is mainly socioeconomic status (income, education, occupation). In multi-site studies, sociometric status more strongly predicts both life satisfaction and day-to-day positive emotion than does socioeconomic status, even when income and education are controlled.
