Why is status so important? Why do we care so much about it? It's a little taboo to talk about status directly. If someone says, "I want a promotion because I want higher status," people tend to look at them sideways. It sounds vain or self-serving, as though status is an unworthy motive. But notice what happens when we use different language. If someone says, "I want a promotion because I want more respect," that sounds perfectly reasonable. Most people would regard it as a legitimate and even admirable goal. Yet respect is, in many ways, just another form of status. Both involve being valued by others and being treated in a certain way. We may avoid the word "status," but much of what we call respect, recognition, prestige, or standing is simply status by another name.

Status is interesting because it lives in the minds of other people. You don’t get to decide how much status you have. You can’t just say, “Hey, everyone, I have high status.” People will say, “Prove it.” And they’re the ones who get to decide. So why do we care about status? There’s a neuroscientist I really like, Michael Gazzaniga, who says that when you get up in the morning, you think about status. You think about where you stand in relation to other people. There’s actually a lot of research in neuroscience on what happens when the mind is at rest—when you’re not focused on a task and your thoughts start to drift. Scientists call this the “default mode network.” It’s a set of brain regions that become active when your mind is wandering. What’s striking is that these regions overlap with the ones involved in thinking about your social world—how you’re seen, how others are seen, where you fit in, how you’re evaluated. So when we have free time, when our minds wander, what do we think about? We think about exactly what Gazzaniga is pointing to. Status isn’t some abstract concern. It’s the background hum of thought, the thing your mind returns to when nothing else is demanding your attention.

Two different studies have found that that upper class people have the strongest desire for wealth and status. Both of these two studies indicate that relative to lower-class individuals, upper-class individuals have a greater desire for wealth and status. Affluent people crave distinction. Naval Ravikant reveals why getting rich has never been easier in human history and why most people are playing the wrong game: 1. status games are zero sum. wealth creation is not. in hunter gatherer times there was no stored wealth so status was the only game worth playing. high status meant you ate first. today you can build a product, scale it, and create abundance for millions of people without taking anything from anyone. i can be wealthy and you can be wealthy at the same time. you cannot both be number one. 2. there has never been an easier time in history to create wealth. a few hundred years ago you were born a serf and you died a serf. there was almost no way out. that has changed entirely. the leverage available today through technology, code, and media means wealth creation is accessible to more people than at any point in human history. it is still hard. it will not fall in your lap. but it is possible. 3. status is hardwired into us because wealth creation is evolutionarily new. we spent hundreds of thousands of years in hunter gatherer societies where status determined survival. wealth only became real with the agricultural revolution, accelerated with the industrial revolution, and exploded with the information age. your brain has not caught up. it still craves the ranking ladder. 4. get rich first. then go for fame and status if you still want it. trying to build a following to then monetize it is a much harder path than building wealth first and trading some of it for status later. rich people go to davos, donate to nonprofits, start appearing in films. they trade money for status because once you have money that is what you want next. do it in that order not the other way around. 5. you can reach a point where you are satisfied with your wealth. you cannot reach that point with status. the leaderboard never ends. youtube shows you your likes going up and down every single day and keeps you running on the treadmill forever. wealth has a finish line. status does not.

There are two very different ways to acquire social status: Dominance and prestige. Dominance is the older form of status-seeking. You can see it in non-human animals—chimpanzee troops, gorillas, even pecking orders among chickens. You’ll see these animals fighting or posturing to establish who outranks whom, who’s in charge, who’s second in command, that sort of thing. In humans, dominance shows up as intimidation, bullying, violence, reputation destruction, gossip—ways of asserting control or inspiring fear. People acquire dominance through those less savory means. Someone like Joseph Stalin gained status through dominance. Then there’s the other pathway to status, which is prestige. This kind of status comes from doing impressive things—things that make people want to be around you. It’s earned by contributing something valuable to the group or by doing something others find admirable. People confer dominance because of what you can do to them—because you can inflict costs. But they confer prestige because of what you can do for them—because you can teach, help, or inspire them. And if you spend time with a prestigious person, some of that status tends to rub off. That’s why people want selfies with celebrities and post them on social media—it’s a way of absorbing a bit of that prestige. Someone like Stephen Hawking is a good example. He obviously didn’t acquire status through dominance; he earned it through brilliance and achievement.
