Why is status so important? Why do we care so much about it? It's a little taboo to talk about status directly. If someone says, "I want a promotion because I want higher status," people tend to look at them sideways. It sounds vain or self-serving, as though status is an unworthy motive. But notice what happens when we use different language. If someone says, "I want a promotion because I want more respect," that sounds perfectly reasonable. Most people would regard it as a legitimate and even admirable goal. Yet respect is, in many ways, just another form of status. Both involve being valued by others and being treated in a certain way.
