Lack of lane discipline, creating additional columns & poor traffic arrangement are the reasons. A barricade must be placed from AU signal to separate the vehicles proceeding towards madhya kailash. Even with road widening, this won't solve since flyover widening is not on cards

This is also problem all across the city even sub urban inconsistent lanes 2 lanes is good enough to handle smooth traffic suddenly it goes to 8 and 2 to even 1. Insane architecture and design of Chennai roads.

Is there any logic why @ChennaiTraffic is routing West-bound SP road traffic onto OMR, through a U Turn, then back onto SP Road? Instead of using the flyover as designed? And preventing right turns onto OMR from east-bound sp road? Not allowing right turns from omr to sp road?

I think solution is to segregate the traffic for flyover even before it reaches the narrowing part you can clearly see heavy vehicles moving from extreme left blocking to merge to flyover causing bottleneck. It has nothing to do with number of lanes or widening just better design of segregation needed before the merge point atleast 500m before this should be segregated with proper road signs and markings.

Which moron designed this flyover. Clearly they failed to estimated the vehicle volume on the flyover compared to the road below. Ideally the flyover should have been much broader given the huge vehicle volume.

Nope the problems won't be resolved... The bridge firstly need to be widened to accomodate atleast 3 lanes of ongoing traffic Our folks here doesn't know anything about lane mathematics so even add 100 lanes the problem continues

I saw some chinese roads having moving medians to adjust the lane size during peak hours. If we use that it would be great as I have seen lot of places where one section road is less congested

Why can’t the lane division barrier start atleast a kilometre prior to the flyover. ?

I am sure they have a solution, looking at the width of the road after the bottleneck

Similar is the case near karapakkam junction in OMR. There are no traffic lights from karapakkam to thoraipakkam, traffic police could only help so much. No idea why there are no traffic lights, no u turn boards.

Sir, it is not multiple lanes converging. It is sheer indiscipline. Everyone want to get ahead of the rest. The victims are the ones who follow the rules. This used to happen in DXB Garhoud subway. All it took was a mobile radar to catch the lane cutting. The fines worked.

Been writing about this for a long time, some genius takes these utter foolish decisions and thereby wasting public infrastructure as well.

Similar issue happens in Pallavaram new flyover in GST Road also. It was initially planned as a one way , that time it was good . Then some intellectual converted it into two way creating a mess both over the flyover and in it’s mouths in both ends.

This is the number one reason for traffic jams in Bangalore too. From lanes roads suddenly naarrows to one or two lanes and with merging traffic. There is no road consistently of the same width for more than a kilometre in Bangalore. Chennai feels much better.

They can make compulsory left turn off the vehicles coming from kotturpuram and allow them U turn under the newely constructed bridge near mathya kailash temple. So that vehicles going towards kotturpuram and Guindy can go freely.

It won't..road width is more than the width of flyover..only option is to keep the flyover one way, which kind of allows more vehicles to pass through..but that wud impact vehicles going in the opp direction..

Once the roads are widened, this flyover should be demolished. It has become more of a nuisance, this 2way traffic switch is clearly not working anymore.

All the Vehicles towards PH road from thegolden George Nagar new bridge take the wrong side, since there is no right turn at the existing signal. Police should either stop this dangerous driving or open the right turn towards Maduravoil.

Most jams are causes by this kind of simple planning lapses unfortunately. Actually most flyovers are useless. They cause huge issues with narrow roads below where max traffic flows.

Open up the signal below the over pass for straight traffic. If not widen the overpass by taking Land from CLRI ( which is anyway empty at that stretch)OR build subway for MadhtaKailash to Nandanam and allow free way for Anna UNiversity to Madhya Kailash. Funds are plenty

Everything except what should be done has been done. The road below flyover on south side needs 2 more lanes. Widening from Raj Bhavan to Anna univ is useless, creating artificial jam with vehicles cutting lanes

Very poor traffic planning, bad signals, poor visibility of signal to the small vehicle riders, missing of signal mapping, absense of technology in Chennai roads traffic management. This will never improve irrespective of any Govt in TN.

Road widening cannot solve this problem. The IIT flyover needs to be widened too.

Dude, highlight the footpaths and pedestrian pathways. High time we need them; it's all messed up now. Very few high-profile places have a proper footpath. Other areas either don't have them or they're occupied by vendors. Uniformly across TN. Completely abolish vendors on footpaths @chennaicorp @chennaipolice_ Police and team, are you scared of removing vendors?? Why can’t you take a stand? So many lives would be saved by removing vendors from footpaths. People would walk properly on footpaths, there would be lesser traffic, and people wouldn't stop to buy things. Please, my humble request.
