Lorentz Forces,I've seen it happen with 336 MCM aluminum cables at 13,800 volts. Primary feeders can do this in a short circuit too; 8-12 MVA is no joke.

This only happens with single phase cables for example when there is a short circuit. When you have phase and neutral wire in one cable, the magnetic field is zero. Also under normal/heavy load nothing moves.

Magnetic fields or thermal expansion?

High currents cause high magnetic forces between cables of either attraction or repulsion. When wires are not exactly parallel, it causes bending.

Is it creating its own magnetic field? How else would they move?

Think of it like water hoses. As I understand it, Current is the flow of electrons through a conductor. Usually measured in amps, driven by voltage Lots of current going from point a-b creates heat, friction and line loss (resistance). When you charge a firehose with lots of water flow it jumps and bounces around. I suspect the same is happening with high voltage/ current power cables. I work at a power plant, but have not seen cables move to the extent shown in the video.

Missing some context; this is fault currents generating massive electromagnetic fields in single conductor cables. 3 conductor cables usually cancel this out though they still heat up & do spontaneous unscheduled disassembly with fireworks.

Is this why the cable at the EVcharging station kicks when charging begins as if it is the hose at a petrol station? 😀

Someone should attach things to the cable and harness their power to move like this. Maybe call the apparatus a "motivator" or something. For marketing, they could even shorten the name to "mot'or."

Good cable dressing is always important, regardless of the amount current they are meant to draw. Even video and audio cables get all tangled up. I really think all cables have orgies when nobody is looking.

@grok, is this true that High current can move cables like in this video?

An electrician told me about a job where they ran large multiple cables for a 3 phase circuit through 3 metallic conduits 1 phase per conduit when the building was energized the conduit whipped like this and the whole thing had to be rerun with the phases distributed in all 3 conduits.

it's not merely the high current that cause it, but the change rate of the current relative to time

Similarly human nerves behave when high current flows through them during anger like activity.

You know those really big power lines you see real high in the air? Transmission Lines. During heavy loading they can sag upwards of 10-15 feet from the load on the wire.

For anyone here who can't believe a current flowing through a conducyor can create such forces: Look up how an electric motor (yes, those accelerating your 2 ton car to 60mph in 2 seconds) works.

It does not take much A to experience this: Home solar system, peak sun, maybe 200A flowing through my cables and I can hear them "singing" (pulsing noises). That 'cause of my inverters way to push the A into them, too. But same effect active here...
