What if AI agents had to pay every time they read a webpage? Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince 🌥 says that's where the internet is headed. Visa handles about 80,000 transactions per second at its peak. Cloudflare expects to need about 10 million on day one.

@Cloudflare @eastdakota @Visa @FlexaHQ with their collateral token ethereum:0xff20817765cb7f73d4bde2e66e067e58d11095c2 is positioned perfectly with instant and completely fraud proof transactions.

@Cloudflare @eastdakota @Visa That volume gap means agent payments need rails with predictable fees and instant confirmation, not card networks

@Cloudflare @eastdakota @Visa if agents have to pay every time they open a page, half my prototypes just got a grocery bill i'd rather knock first than vacuum the whole internet

@Cloudflare @eastdakota @Visa Night shifts taught me that free attention is already expensive. If agents start paying per page, the value shifts to who owns the meters, not who writes the longest prompt.

@Cloudflare @eastdakota @Visa What if humans had to pay everytime they take a step? AI agents can hardly perform and verify tasks without fetching a webpage. Monetizing such action will hurt users more. Can't imagine paying for a model and still paying for what the model does to complete a task. 😕

@Cloudflare @eastdakota @Visa Finally, a paywall that charges the one reader who actually reads the whole article.

@Cloudflare @eastdakota @Visa API costs for agent-to-agent reads could make paid web access look like a rounding error if every model call hits a metered endpoint.

@Cloudflare @eastdakota @Visa each ai action being monetized would change everything especially for big models someone's gonna make serious cash here

@Cloudflare @eastdakota @Visa Visa peaks around 80,000 a second, and Cloudflare expects about 10 million on day one. Does a crypto rail close that gap, or do the card networks just adapt?

@Cloudflare @eastdakota @Visa AI agents paying per request could create an entirely new machine-to-machine payments economy. Stablecoins may be a natural fit at that scale. Curious what @NYKrant thinks.

@Cloudflare @eastdakota @Visa 10M payments/sec only works if most of them never settle on-chain one by one. Expect batched or channel-style settlement with periodic netting. The harder problem is authorization: per-agent spend caps and scoped permissions, not raw throughput.

10M transactions per second "on day one" isn't a roadmap. It's a press release. Visa built 80K TPS over six decades of testing. Cloudflare's estimate assumes the entire stack — settlement, dispute, chargeback — works at that scale on a blockchain nobody's built yet. AI agents paying per webpage is a real future. Cloudflare's timeline isn't.

@Cloudflare @eastdakota @Visa Agents are already paying. Mine buy billboard space on a 3D tower through an API. 10 million a second starts with the first one.

I’ve been watching x402 since Coinbase 🛡️ launched it in May 2025. I did a quick research pass. Here’s the snapshot ↓ Early integrations: • CoinGecko: x402 pay-per-use access for agents (shared by Coinbase Developer Platform🛡️). • Vercel: x402 AI starter template (x402 + modern AI stack demo). • Firecrawl: x402-powered search endpoint (pay per request). • Concordium: x402 + native age verification for agent payments. • Multiversᕽ: “agentic payments” built around x402 support. • AltLayer: building an “x402 Suite” for value exchange between agents. • Solana claims x402 has processed 35M+ transactions and $10M+ volume since launch. TL;DR x402 turns HTTP 402 “Payment Required” into a payment flow. A server returns a price for a request. The client pays in stables like USDC. Then the server returns the result. → Coinbase launched x402 via Coinbase Developer Platform (May 6, 2025). → Coinbase + Cloudflare announced the x402 Foundation (Sep 23, 2025). → Cloudflare added x402 support into its Agents SDK + MCP servers. Why? - AI agents need a clean way to pay for tools. - Data, compute, APIs, services. - No accounts, cards, or subscription screens. x402 is trying to make pay-per-request feel normal. Use cases that already make sense → Paid APIs Pay per call instead of subscriptions. → AI tool calls Pay per query, per inference, per task. → Agent-to-agent payments Software paying software automatically. → Micropaywalls Pay for one endpoint, one action, one piece of content. If this takes off, stablecoins stop being a story. They become how apps and AI agents pay for things online.

Chamath Rips Cloudflare CEO’s Layoff Memo: “Shut the f**k up. You suck at this.” @jason: “Matthew Prince, who is the CEO of Cloudflare, said, ‘Two weeks ago, I laid off more than 20% of my workforce. I didn't do it because Cloudflare is struggling. We posted record revenue growth, have strong free cash flow…’ And he says, basically, he's getting rid of measurers. Measurers manage people and measure data. (Prince says) they're unnecessary because of AI.” Chamath Palihapitiya: “I thought the Matthew Prince note was horrible. This was, like, from the PR School of Retards. You could not have written a worse memo. You reduce humans to a label called ‘the measurer,’ and then you're like, ‘I'm going to lay off all the measurers.’ Who cares what Matthew Prince thinks? The reality is that, if this is the way that you're going to message something as critical as this, I think you did a horrible job. And now you label these people, and you put a scarlet letter on their back, so now when they try to get a different job, they're like, ‘Oh, you're one of the Cloudflare measurers?’ How does that help anybody? There's enough of these tech CEOs that are now public. You can hear them, you can understand them. And I think what we're learning is, man, they're really good at one thing, and they're not necessarily as good at all the other things. And so I would say shut the f**k up, get behind the keyboard, just do your job. And if you need to manage something, just manage it. But don't write these missives. You're terrible at it, all of you. You suck at this. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.”
