When rain falls, most of it disappears into drains. But in one district, it began flowing back into the earth. IAS officer Prathap M, the son of a farmer from Virudhunagar, Tamil Nadu, grew up understanding the value of water. As the first graduate in his family, he once cycled kilometres to school with a dream of serving society. Years later, that dream took shape through a simple but powerful idea. Instead of sealing abandoned borewells, his administration converted over 1,200 unused borewells into rainwater-harvesting recharge structures, allowing monsoon water to seep back into underground aquifers. History, they say, is the greatest teacher. Its lessons remind us that the most magnificent engineering marvels of the past aren’t just beautiful—they’re brilliant with purpose. On this Engineers’ Day, we look back at such an engineering marvel from the Mauryan era, the Ahar–Pyne, a traditional rainwater harvesting and irrigation system. Primarily built to sustain irrigation for agriculture in drought-prone areas; this unique method helped to divert and store floodwaters into reservoirs, called Ahars. Once almost forgotten, this ancient system has been revived with the collaborative efforts of ICICI Foundation for Inclusive Growth (the CSR arm of ICICI Bank), Gram Panchayats and Panchayat Samitis in Bihar. Highlights: - 32 Ahars revived - 57 crore litres of additional annual water storage created - 900 acres brought back under cultivation - Over 20,000 lives positively impacted across 16 villages Where fields had dried, crops now flourish. Where families had left, they are returning to rebuild. This is not just history remembered. It is engineering reborn.

We will care for the children who, instead of going to school, spend their days fetching water. We will care for every single citizen for whom water becomes the most precious commodity during the summer. We will care for our future generations. ​The little we can do is: 1) ​Stop wasting water in our daily routines. 2) ​Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth or shaving. 3) ​Use a bucket for bathing instead of running the shower. 4) ​Recycle the wastewater from your RO systems and AC units for cleaning or watering plants. 5) ​Reuse water from washing food (like vegetables, rice, or lentils) to water the plants at home or in your locality. 6) ​Carry a refillable bottle instead of buying single-use plastic mineral water bottles every time. 7) ​Finish the last drop if you do use a plastic water bottle, rather than taking one sip and throwing the rest away. 8) ​Adopt rainwater harvesting in your home or building as much as possible. 9) ​Take a pledge not to pollute water bodies, as millions of people depend on that water directly. 10) ​Start planting more trees to help restore groundwater levels. 11) ​Repost and share this with others and be part of the change.

Thoughts I've had about having children : 1. Perhaps having kids is the 4th most important aspect of a human birth. The others being : - Spiritual growth. - Taking care of your parents - Giving back to society, through your work. 2. I'm sure that the birth of your kids makes you more responsible. But maybe it also makes you relive your childhood. And therefore makes you dive deeper into your own psyche. 3. Spiritual growth is definitely accelerated if you protect & raise a child. Living for the sake of another human being is one of the greatest things that one can do in a human birth. 4. One needs to be financially, spiritually and biologically ready to bring life into this world. Be aware of "responsibility", before multiple duties become your reality. 5. Having progeny is your chance at the propulsion of your value system into the future. If your kids make the world a better place, you have done your bit for society. 6. Considering where world population demographics currently stand, many believe that a couple should produce more than 2 children. Personally I want more than 2 kids. But not at the cost of the quality of fatherhood I can provide. Time will tell... 7. As I age, I love my parents more with every passing year. I also realise that I carry generational trauma & tendencies that I've inherited from my bloodline. Fatherhood will be my test. What am I passing on to the next generation? What tendencies or trauma will be held back from reaching them? All I can do now is work on being the best version of myself. --- Every stage of adult life throws new challenges your way. If you put your mind to it, you'll become better annually. Study about fatherhood. Study people's mistakes. Visualise a warm reality. Prepare for responsibility. #spirituality #fatherhood

Yorkshire, starting on Friday 11 July, a temporary use ban (TUB), which is a restriction on the use of hosepipes, will come into effect. This will help our region’s reservoir levels recover and protect Yorkshire's water resources throughout the summer months, following one of the driest springs on record and the region being in drought. We've tried everything possible to avoid these restrictions, and despite our customers' help to save water where they can and our efforts to manage water resources, including adding an extra 100 people to our leakage team and upgrading our infrastructure to reduce leaks and bursts, the dry weather and warmer-than-usual temperatures have increased demand. We have supplied an additional 4.3 billion litres of water between April and June compared to a typical year - that's enough to supply Leeds for five weeks. This has left our reservoirs more depleted than expected and lower than average for this time of year. As a result, we’re kindly asking everyone to please put their hosepipes away for a bit. We understand you may have some questions about the restrictions. You can find detailed FAQs, including activities covered by the hosepipe restrictions and who would be exempt from it, on our website at or watch the video below to see how this might affect you. The restrictions will be in place until the region has seen significant rainfall to bring reservoirs and groundwater stocks back to where they need to be. Doing our bit for a healthier, stronger India 🇮🇳 As an athlete, I’ve always been mindful of what I eat and over the years, I’ve come to realise that small changes in our daily habits can make a big difference. That’s why I’m proud to join hands with the Department of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare, Government of India, for a special awareness campaign under the National Mission on Edible Oils (NMEO). The message is simple but powerful: Let’s try to reduce our edible oil consumption by just 10%. Not just for ourselves but for our families, and for the country. India currently consumes over 20 kg of edible oil per person every year. That’s much higher than what’s considered healthy and it’s also one of the reasons we spend nearly ₹80,000 crore on oil imports annually. This campaign is a reminder that good health starts at home.
