For three long days, a pregnant Gangetic dolphin fought for survival after getting trapped in a fast-flowing canal in Uttar Pradesh's Maharajganj district. The 7.2-foot-long, 147-kg dolphin had been swept into the Paratawal canal during heavy rains. An initial rescue attempt failed, but the teams refused to give up. On Monday, the Uttar Pradesh Forest Department, Gorakhpur Zoo, TSA Foundation, the Irrigation Department, Uttar Pradesh Police, and the Namami Gange Gangetic Dolphin Rescue Ambulance came together for a second rescue mission. To ensure she reached safety without delay, authorities created a 20-km green corridor from Bhatkhat to Rajghat. The rescue ambulance then covered 52 km in just 1 hour and 5 minutes before releasing her safely into the Rapti River. The Gangetic dolphin is India's National Aquatic Animal and an important indicator of the Ganga's ecological health.
