What is a differential?

A differential is a mechanical system that allows driven wheels to rotate at different speeds. It prevents tire slip and mechanical stress during turns while transmitting engine torque.

Great explanation! I had locking differentials in an older Toyota truck. If you locked them on pavement they'd chirp and hop around corners.
