Children aren’t born antisemitic. They aren’t born racist. They aren’t born with hate in their hearts. It’s something that’s taught. That’s learnt. There’s lots of things we need to do to stamp out antisemitism but what we do in education is a big part of it. Today we announced a number of reforms to teacher training, teacher resources and the national curriculum. We are also strengthening the powers and the penalties of the tertiary education regulator that oversees universities. To drive these reforms and recommend further actions to prevent and respond to antisemitism today we announced the establishment of the Antisemitism Education Taskforce. It will be chaired by David Gonski, a towering figure in Australia who knows the education system back to front.

This is what America and China are doing — building armies of skilled individuals. For Nigeria to compete with these great nations, we must take a page from their playbook. Scott Adams once said, “Every skill you acquire doubles your odds of success.” This is part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and our Federal Ministry of Education strategy. That’s why we are aggressively reviving our technical and vocational education and training (TVET) system. We aim to equip young men and women with “life skills” that will enable them to be productive members of their communities, while also improving their employability and career opportunities. TVET is one of the cornerstones of our 6-point agenda to reform our education system. We will be creating opportunities for our young Nigerians both men and women to give them life skills to improve their employability irrespective of their level of education — from basic education to tertiary institutions. A skilled workforce is key to President Tinubu’s vision for the nation. We will also be adding to our TVET curriculum life skills in Renewable Energy (Solar), compressed natural gas (CNG) and mechanised farming to also support PBAT’s agenda of ensuring food security in our country. We are working to build a better nation for the next generation.

Transforming Education from the Ground Up. Today, we took another important step in transforming education from the ground up. In partnership with eight universities, we launched the construction of three quality pre-primary schools in Buno Bedele Zone of Oromia Region, with an investment of ETB 43.5 million through the Summer Volunteer Service Program. We also planted seedlings and delivered educational materials for 1,000 students. These are more than school buildings. They are investments in our children, their learning, and the future they will shape. Once completed, these schools will provide young children with a strong foundation on which to build their lives. We extend our sincere gratitude to the people and administration of Buno Bedele for the warm welcome and generous hospitality. The transformation underway in pre-primary education is fundamental to improving the quality of our entire education system. Imagine the change if every child through out Ethiopia gets such opportunity, & it is possible if we work hard and prioritise. In the last five years, more than 34,000 have been built. Yet we need more to cover everyone. Hence let us join hands to build a strong foundation for every child and a better future for our education system.

There is still a long way to go, but with a little patience and hard work, we will build the best education system in the world.
