A pensioner from the Omutse-Gwondjamba village in the Omuthiya Constituency of the Oshikoto Region, Sacky Namgongo, is calling on Namibians, particularly the youth, to engage in pearl millet (mahangu) production as a means of fighting hunger and poverty while contributing to national food security. Namgongo, who has been cultivating mahangu for more than 20 years, says his field has remained a reliable source of income and has never disappointed him. His dedication and success in pearl millet production have earned him several accolades from the Namibian Agronomic Board. In 2025, he received a certificate as the Emerging Pearl Millet Producer of the Year. In 2024, he was honoured as the Outstanding Pearl Millet Producer of the Year in Oshikoto, and in 2017, he was crowned the Oshikoto Regional Mahangu Champion of the Year. Last year, Namgongo harvested 35 tonnes of mahangu, and this year he anticipates a yield of 45 tonnes.
