Unbelievable satellite view of the Middle East cyclone right now. It’s not very often you see something like this in the Persian Gulf region. Over 1,400 km to the SE of the low-pressure center, the most intense supercells of this entire system just struck the United Arab Emirates and blanketed the nation in exceptionally cold thunderstorms. Towering, electric cloud tops as frigid as -90 C (-130 F) moved directly over Dubai and Abu Dhabi, delivering one of the stormiest nights in recent memory for both of these desert metropolises.

This is leading to extreme rain over the Bōsō Peninsula, where urban flooding in Chiba and the surrounding cities is ongoing. As much as ~100 mm (4 in) of rain fell here in just a single hour. Jamaica has mountains over 5000 ft high… a peak over 7K. Besides winds forecast to be cat 4/5 intensity (perhaps over 155 mph at the surface) the rain is expected to be prolific, due to slow movement and lift from the mountains (similar to Helene in NC) especially IF #Melissa is a direct hit. When you combine cat 4/5 winds with 3 feet plus of rain, catastrophic is not an overstatement. For all those on #Jamaica who are reading this, please take this as a serious threat to your life. It may be, and this is not meant to sensationalize.

When a heavy rain shower is barely moving and winds are calm, the rain can come straight down, making for a stark line of rain on the ground.
