The most brutal part is not that China is using AI to sort garbage. It is that China has pushed waste management so far that the old problem has reversed. China used to worry about having too much garbage to process. Now some waste-to-energy plants are facing the opposite problem: not enough garbage. Previously sealed landfills may even have to be reopened, not because China failed, but because waste has become fuel, feedstock, data, and part of an industrial recycling loop. This is what China does best. It takes the ugliest, dirtiest, most ignored corner of urban life — garbage — and turns it into engineering, automation, energy recovery, environmental governance, and industrial optimization. Even trash gets absorbed into the machine. In many countries, garbage is where governance collapses. In China, even garbage becomes a system.

Blinken finally said the quiet part out loud: The United States cannot defeat China alone. So his solution is not to outbuild, outproduce, or outcompete China. It is to assemble Europe, Japan, South Korea, India, Canada, and Australia into a larger anti-China bloc—then disguise containment as “alliance coordination.” That is the entire strategy: America alone is no longer strong enough, so Washington wants to weaponize everyone else’s anxieties. But here is the darkest joke. While Blinken dreams of mobilizing the world against China, global opinion is moving in the opposite direction. Pew polling now shows China viewed more positively than the United States across many countries. Even in Europe—America’s traditional alliance base—China’s favorability has risen above America’s. So Washington has a structural problem: It wants to lead an anti-China coalition at the exact moment more of the world trusts China than the country demanding that coalition. Blinken calls this “working with friends.” China calls it what it is: An empire that can no longer win alone asking its clients to supply the missing weight. America’s alliances were supposed to prove its leadership. Now they increasingly reveal its dependence. China is competing with the United States. China is not what you think it is. China was created by America. In 1971 Nixon removed the dollar from the gold standard. The dollar was now worth nothing. So he needed to create demand for it. Two new hallucinations. The petrodollar — oil only sold in US dollars. And China — the world's factory, paid in US dollars. China didn't rise because of communism. China didn't rise because of hard work. China rose because America needed somewhere to park its dollars. China is a hallucination of a hallucination. And here is the problem with that. If the original hallucination becomes unstable — China becomes twice as unstable. Because it has nothing real to stand on. That is why China and America will always need each other. The dream only works if both keep dreaming it.
