NEWS: SpaceX has released a statement after today's successful 11th Starship test flight. "Every major objective of the flight test was achieved, providing valuable data as we prepare the next generation of Starship and Super Heavy. The flight test began with Super Heavy igniting all 33 Raptor engines and ascending over the Gulf. The successful first-stage ascent was followed by a hot-staging maneuver, with Starship’s upper stage igniting its six Raptor engines to continue its flight to space. Following stage separation, the Super Heavy booster completed its boostback burn to put it on a course to a pre-planned splashdown zone off the coast of Texas using 12 of the 13 planned engines. Under the same angle of attack tested on the previous flight, the booster descended until successfully igniting all 13 planned engines (including one that did not relight during the boostback burn) for the high-thrust portion of the landing burn. The booster successfully executed a unique landing burn planned for use on the next generation booster. Super Heavy hovered above the water before shutting down its engines and splashing down. After completing a full-duration ascent burn, Starship achieved its planned velocity and trajectory. During flight, Starship successfully deployed eight Starlink simulators and executed the third in-space relight of a Raptor engine, demonstrating a critical capability for future deorbit burns. Starship re-entered the Earth’s atmosphere and was able to gather extensive data on the performance of its heatshield as it was intentionally stressed to test the limits of the vehicle’s capabilities. Why the C-17 will never take off from an aircraft carrier—it’s not about power, but the complexity of the design and physics involved. The C-17 Globemaster is among the largest military aircraft ever built. Its wings span about 52 meters—longer than an Olympic pool—and it weighs as much as roughly 50 cars. An aircraft carrier’s deck is only about 300 meters long, while a C-17 needs nearly 2 kilometers to take off. Even with a catapult, it couldn’t reach the required speed. Its landing gear isn’t built for carrier landings, and its wings don’t fold like naval aircraft. It’s essentially like trying to launch a truck off a balcony—simply not possible.

A Japanese Air Self-Defense Force F-15J fighter jet made an emergency landing at Naha Airport in Okinawa after its left main landing gear failed while returning from a scramble intercept mission. The aircraft, F-15J 22-8809 of the 304th Tactical Fighter Squadron (304 Hikotai), skidded on the runway, rotated approximately 180 degrees, and came to rest with its left wing touching the runway. Fortunately, the pilot was not harmed and exited the aircraft safely.

Passengers sometimes hear an odd, rhythmic “thumping” just after takeoff, when the gear is retracted. Particularly if seated near the front. That’s the nose gear, and the wheels being stopped once they get into the bay. Unlike the main gear, which applies some brakes before pulling in the wheels, the nose gear has no brakes installed. So, to stop the wheels, it pulls the gear up until the tires come in contact with “snubbers”. These are flexible strips w/ a bit of rubber mounted to them. As the tires come in contact, the snubbers slow & stop them. In the picture, you can see some rubber gets flung around the nose gear bay. Anyway, contact is not always perfect, so you sometimes get a rhythmic thumping as the wheels slow. Other times you may hear it as a constant sound for a few seconds that seems to slow down & change pitch…and slowing down is exactly what’s happening. Anyway, now you know what the sound right after takeoff is. We generally retract the gear immediately after confirming we have a rate of climb. “Positive rates (of climb), gear up”. Hope that helps!

Higher approach speeds mean a very narrow flare window, increasing the risk of a late or ineffective flare. Many MD-11 hard landings involved bounced touchdowns and porpoising. In this aircraft, excessive vertical loads could overstress the main landing gear and wing spar — in extreme cases leading to structural failure and rollover. By 2012, the MD-11 had the highest hard-landing rate among large Western-built airliners: 5.63 events per million flight cycles. Contributing factors cited by the NTSB: • High landing speed → tight flare timing • Cockpit far ahead of the main gear → reduced touchdown awareness • Automatic thrust reduction in the flare → delayed corrections during high sink rates • Long-haul cargo ops → fewer landings, reduced proficiency This old video is of an Alitalia MD-11 with a very rough landing into Kai Tak.

Most likely they have only the laser emitter and not the classified controller, but that is still valuable. China can now compare it to its own system and help design missiles invulnerable to this.

Honestly, that was impressive first flight for ZQ3 A flawless ascent, the second stage made it to orbit, a successful re-entry burn, stable descent, and all that went wrong was an engine failure on the landing burn No other reusable booster has got this close to a landing on its first flight I wouldn't be surprised if LandSpace can sort out whatever destroyed that engine by the next flight, and then a successful landing would seem pretty likely
