At our stockades, surrounded by each other and the Keepers who watch over them, our orphan elephants can truly rest. We have now met 94 babies born wild to orphan elephants we rescued, raised and rewilded. In a wonderful demonstration of the lifelong bond they form with the Keepers, many of our ex-orphan mums return to our reintegration units after giving birth to show off their babies to the people who raised them. We have even witnessed several mothers returning to give birth at our units! Every rescue carries this possibility within it. At our Umani Springs unit, we are watching a new generation of elephants enter the world. What began with two elephants in 2014 – Murera and Sonje – has grown into a family herd already featuring four wild-born babies, with more on the way! Wondering how our Keepers became elephant guardians? It’s not anything one would find on a resume. While many of our Keepers have shambas or raise livestock back home, none have worked professionally with elephants before. Over the years, we've found it best to include the orphans in our recruitment process: they are quick to identify the ‘X factor’ that makes an excellent Keeper, which is why we ultimately put recruitment in their capable hands. New candidates join the orphan herd on a trial basis, and if they are embraced by the elephants, they are hired as a full-time Keeper. Keeper Jackson passed the ‘interview’ years ago, and has been a vital part of our team since. Our logic is that each person, with their diverse background, opens a whole new dimension to the role. This strategy has the added bonus of fostering conservation awareness across the country. Keepers become vital ambassadors within their own communities. Over the years, many orphans have been saved by ordinary people who developed empathy for elephants through a Keeper who is a father, uncle, friend, or neighbour.

What's the difference between raising elephants and rhinos? We went straight to the expert: Keeper Justus. He has been a parent to his own children alongside countless orphaned elephants, giraffe, and rhinos over the many years he has been with us. He says: "Rhinos need small feeds, they sleep a lot, and they are all about scent, senses and hearing – and they are content alone with their Keeper. Elephants take a long time to feed, do not sleep a lot during the day, and they are action-oriented and very social." They also, as Mwinzi shows, get jealous too! He adds: "I have my two-footed family and my four-legged family. I think it is making people back home appreciate elephants, rhinos, and other animals through the stories I tell."

Elephants can form over-attachments to any one individual and if their presence is missed, and orphan can fall into a deep depression and rapidly lose condition. It's why we have a whole team of caregivers caring for the orphans (that and it takes many hands to feed the orphans). It gives our Keepers extended time at home with their own families, and it means every orphan comes to know every Keeper, so that any one Keeper's absence is understood as a break, not another loss.
