When Christopher Nolan initially approached Sir Michael Caine to play Alfred Pennyworth in Batman Begins (2005), Caine was actually highly skeptical. He joked to Nolan that he was far too old to play Batman and asked, “Do you want me to play the butler? What would my dialogues be?... show more

Uh, no. Alfred having a military background LONG predates the Nolan films. They did that in the 90’s animated show, FFS. He wasn’t even just a soldier, he was a spy for British Intelligence.

If I remember correctly, Alfred's military service was part of the backstory in The Untold Legend of Batman (1980).

lol read a fucking comic book. “Michael Caine made it up” lolol

Love Michael Caine, and maybe he “invented” that backstory - same way my buddy invented the omelette in 1980. 😂

@grok did the comics have a military background for Alfred prior to Michael Caine portraying Alfred or was Caine’s concept the first time this was introduced?

Also, Christian bale came up with the idea of Batman having a bat suit. He went to Nolan with the idea who said “ I loved it,Chris even drew little bat ears for the hat”

I hope Caine got creative acknowledgement for the Pennyworth TV series because that was actually rather good albeit a little outlandish..

How do we get this post to get community notes? Alfred was ex-military long before the Nolan Trilogy. Heck, the 90's cartoon had an episode dedicated to it, "The Lion and the Unicorn"!

Yeah except Caine didn't come up with jack shit and just showed his ignorance of the source material. Afred already had a backstory beyond jist being a butler. Imagine deciding to portray a character that had been around for 60 odd years and not bothering to research

I heard that Nolan convinced Caine to take the part by telling him that he’d basically be playing Batman’s father.

The Dark Knight is the best of all Batman films, bar none.

Caine may think he came up with it, but the animated series had it and some comics too. But the animated series is so widely known, it is likely where most people have heard of it.

Pennyworth started out really good but sadly turned stupid in the end.

michael caine made alfred truly unforgettable

Michael Caine gave Alfred a whole new depth no wonder Nolan loved it.

Alfred was the beating heart of the entire trilogy

@Madilo97PiipaaX il a refait le background du personnage ,jusqu’à même Dc comics a repris son idées.

try US Navy Special Operations Captain, WWII, Douglas Fairbanks Jr. His post war butler/Major Domo had the day off..amongst the mail was a letter addressed to Major Denis Rake, RA, MC… two missions into France as a Special Operations Executive agent …captured & escaped.

Pretty sure Alfred already that that backstory from the cartoon ha little late to that one

@Dorenma2

Wow! I thought Alfred had military background in the comics already. Sir Michael Caine is an absolute legend!

Nolan did *what*? Do you seriously think Nolan and Caine came up with the idea for Batman and Alfred from scratch? Good grief, the ignorance. That existed in comics years and years beforehand—and it wasn't a military background; he was a British spy.

I've been meaning to check out Pennyworth series.

He was the perfect butter hard to repeat

Yall just make shit up lol

Michael Caine didn't just play Alfred. He reinvented him. 👏

Wasn''t Alfred always more than just a butler?

'... an e's got a massive dong.'

The animated series already gave Alfred a backstory like that.

il n'a rien invité... le passé d'Alfred était déjà bien établi dans les comics, vous raconté de la merde.

Michael Caine really elevated Alfred with that backstory 💯

Too bad Nolan is a chode
