WHEN CITIZENS QUESTION THE ELECTORAL SYSTEM, ACCOUNTABILITY MUST ANSWER The question raised by advocate Mahmood Pracha in this video goes to the heart of democratic accountability: Who is accountable when citizens believe their right to vote is being compromised? Pracha calls for sustained public mobilisation over the Election Commission,... SIR, voter-list changes and the electoral process. He argues that citizens must defend constitutional rights through lawful democratic protest and demands answers from those responsible for administering elections. Some of his statements in the video are political allegations or demands and should be understood as such—not as established judicial findings. But there is a documented issue that deserves scrutiny. The Indian Express reported that Election Commissioners Vivek Joshi and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu objected to changes made to Form 6, describing the change as “illegal” and “unauthorised.” The disputed change required new voters to answer questions connected with earlier SIR electoral rolls. That makes transparency more than a political slogan. It means citizens deserve clear answers: Who authorised the change? Why was it introduced? Why were objections raised internally? What safeguards exist to ensure that eligible citizens are not excluded? Pracha has also announced a 10 October Jantar Mantar mobilisation around EVMs and SIR. Independent reporting confirms that such a protest has been announced, although its exact scale and arrangements remain subject to permissions and developments. A democracy does not become stronger by silencing questions. It becomes stronger when institutions can answer difficult questions with documents, procedures and evidence. Protect the vote. With what many people have described as a joke in the name of an election in Ekiti State, I hope Nigerians are truly preparing for the 2027 elections. From what we are seeing, it appears that not only are many Nigerians unprepared, but our electoral system is also not inspiring the level of confidence that citizens expect. If we want credible elections in 2027, we must start paying attention now. We cannot wait until election day before demanding transparency, accountability, and integrity from all stakeholders. Democracy only works when the people are vigilant and when electoral institutions earn the trust of the citizens they serve. The time to prepare for 2027 is now.

With what many people have described as a joke in the name of an election in Ekiti State, I hope Nigerians are truly preparing for the 2027 elections. From what we are seeing, it appears that not only are many Nigerians unprepared, but our electoral system is also not inspiring the level of confidence that citizens expect. If we want credible elections in 2027, we must start paying attention now. We cannot wait until election day before demanding transparency, accountability, and integrity from all stakeholders. Forlini met with all of his local clerks and they identified a huge problem- major discrepancies involving voter-registration information that included both fraudulent and duplicate voter registrations. I asked straightforward questions about government decision-making, lobbying, and conflicts of interest involving the Premier. Instead of answers, I was met with interruptions, insults, and repeated attempts to shut down the discussion. Watch closely. Ask yourself: Why was this question so difficult to answer? And why were they so determined to prevent it from being asked? Since this exchange, Albertans have witnessed controversy after controversy involving sole-source contracts, procurement practices, government appointments, and questions of transparency and accountability. The Presidency appears to be upset because the presidential candidate of the NDC, Peter Obi, called for the resignation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. It is important to understand that many of the criticisms being made today are not new to Nigerian politics. Similar criticisms and demands were made by opposition figures, including Bola Tinubu himself, during the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan. It is also important for Nigerians to remember that the current President was one of the leading figures of the opposition movement that challenged the government of the day and ultimately contributed to a historic political transition. That is why we must continue to speak up, peacefully and lawfully, in pursuit of a better Nigeria. We should not allow those who exercised their right to criticize previous governments to deny others that same right today. A healthy democracy thrives on accountability, constructive criticism, and the freedom of citizens to express their views without fear. The journey toward a better Nigeria must continue.

Instead of mandatory door to door verification by BLOs, people are being herded together like a public gathering and voter verification is being reduced to a farce. This is not SIR. This is an organised subversion of the very purpose for which SIR exists. The Karnataka Congress government appears more interested in protecting its vote bank than protecting the sanctity of electoral rolls. When individual verification is abandoned and mass exercises are encouraged, suspicions of facilitating illegal or dubious entries become inevitable. Democracy cannot function on political convenience, selective scrutiny, and appeasement. The Election Commission must act without delay, cancel every such compromised SIR exercise conducted across Karnataka, and order a fresh, transparent, and strictly rule based verification process. The people of Karnataka deserve clean voter rolls, not an electoral circus orchestrated for partisan gains.

It is not harmful to democracy to allow the investigation into the technical issues to take place. On of the major changes is how the ANC manages the candidate selection process is that there are new requirements, the criteria we use now is much more stringent to ensure that those we send to contest elections are qualifying and wanted by their communities, both in ethical conduct, skills and competence. What that means is that ANC processes of candidates selection are very laborious and we are the first to admit that they are laborious because we involve over a period of time many stakeholders including the community, to those who say why we left things to the eleventh hour we can say categorically we did not. We want to assure our members and communities that those communities and municipalities affected we are dealing with this issue and do find justice in the process and that they will exercise their democratic right. That is why we are asking for a constructive solution with the independent electoral commission and we do believe they will open the door to engagement, it is a Chapter 9 institution it is duty bound to find a solution as long as that solution does not break the law. We are not asking for any changes in our list, we are asking for that portion that was kicked out to be investigated.

From internet restrictions during political events to arbitrary arrests of journalists and disruptions affecting political communication, the pattern is difficult to ignore. When access to information is restricted and criticism is met with intimidation or prosecution, it is not only individual expression that suffers. Public participation suffers with it. Political rights do not end when a person goes online. For democracy to function, people must be able to speak, question, criticise, organise, and access information without fear.
