How it started & how it’s going 💫 I have to reshare this video of me as a child, doing what I love & speaking with so much conviction & passion. Little did I know that I’d go on to do this exact thing as my full time career, but on a much larger scale…sketching up my own designs that are being worn by superstars & working with major brands. It’s pretty surreal to look back on with all that I’ve achieved now. It goes to show how our destiny is already written & can show itself from childhood. When I was at primary & secondary school, being a boy that loved drawing, collecting fashion dolls & was seen as more feminine compared to other boys, I became an easy target & was bullied quite harshly for just being myself. I sometimes still experience similar situations today as an adult, just going about my daily business. Even though I couldn’t wait for my school years to be over so I could focus on my true purpose, I never conformed to fit in. I stayed true to myself & was thankful to have supportive family that encouraged my talent & creative interests from very early on. The things that made me stand out & that I was bullied for back then, are what ultimately got me to where I am today…a self-made, fashion success story! I say all of this to encourage any young boy out there who can relate, who feels different, or that may not have the support system from their family, to never change who you are or let anyone stifle your self expression, passion & creativity. Go after all your dreams, even if you don’t have support. YOU can make it happen for yourself! I believe in you. If I can do it, so can you 🤗🩵

Paul Verhoeven on how the failure of 'Showgirls' (1995) affected his career & why he thinks a movie like 'Showgirls' can't be made anymore in Hollywood: "One of the most interesting, or the most terrible, and the most fascinating things to happen with 'Showgirls' (1995) was the reaction to it. I had not at all expected that I would be brutalized by the critics. Critics would say, “I had to leave the theater” because they had to throw up, it was so dirty, decadent — whatever description they gave it. That was astonishing to me. The feeling of total amazement that the film was received with an absolute full spectrum of animosity will never disappear. When my movie 'Spetters' (1980) was released in Holland in 1980, there was a similar reaction. But the big difference was that that movie had a very big audience. Here, all the reviews were terrible, but people didn’t want to see it either. The backlash, and the consequences for me in the Hollywood industry, are certainly not something I will forget. After 'Showgirls', nobody trusted me anymore, other than with the movies that had been working very well, which was the science-fiction stuff. I started with 'RoboCop' (1987) and 'Total Recall' (1990), but I tried to get away from science fiction. Then all the doors that were opened for me were all closed by 'Showgirls'. It made life more one-dimensional as to what I was able to do. That’s why I decided to go back to myself again with something like [WWII movie] 'Black Book' in 2006. I don’t think that it’s a movie that could ever be made anymore. Ever. Because n*d!ty is more taboo than ever in the United States. You see these movies and the s€x scenes are reduced to a couple of dissolves where you see a hand on a back, but there are really no s€x scenes in American movies anymore. There are exceptions, of course. But not many. Yet, 20 years later we’re still talking about the movie. You never see anything like it anymore, something so outrageous but very well filmed: the lighting, the sound effects, everything. There’s a lot of n*d!ty; but it’s not exploitative. It’s not a p0rn0 movie. I think the n*d!ty in 'Showgirls' is not done in what you would call a “dirty” way. For me, the female body is extremely inspiring and beautiful. When I was in high school in Holland, my art teacher said: "The breast of a woman is the most beautiful thing in the world." I never forgot that, and I’ve always felt that way. When I think of the movie, I see all these brilliant colors and of these beautiful movements — of the body and of the camera — and what stands out for me is the elegance. That sounds strange to people when I say this is a very elegant movie, but I think it is. It’s probably the most elegant movie I’ve ever done." My fellow Kenyans, In the spirit of accountability and civic education, I bring you my analysis of the Nyaribari Chache CDF. My analysis covered 2018-2022. Current MP is Hon. Zaheer Jhanda If you do not know him, please watch the first video attached, and the other pictures. These pictures are from his social media accounts. Please note that, the focus of the review is the CDF itself and not necessarily the politician. That is to say that I don't care when someone was elected. I am looking at the performance of the CDF vs intended purpose. When I do bring up the politician, I am discussing his or her fit for the job. Before we even get to the findings, I do want to ask you for your indulgence a little bit, to discuss something that I believe is related to the findings you will see below. And that is, "intellectual capacity". Or, "competence". Please follow me here. Let us assume that you are a wealthy individual. But you were not born wealthy. You started from below scratch, and now, you own several companies with annual revenues in the billions. One has annual revenues of KSH 17 billion, and let us call it KIAMBU CORPORATION. The other has annual revenues of KSH 40 billion. We will call this one NAIROBI CORPORATION. Finally - you have a start-up - and things are really tight there. You need to make sure the start-up succeeds. You need someone to help steer the start-up through some hard times, ensuring that the company is focused on its core competency, to develop it into a success story. The start-up is young, but has KSH 200 million in revenues annually. And you cannot afford to waste money. We will call the start-up Nyaribari Chache Corporation. You need to hire Chief Executive Officers ("CEOs") for these three companies. Among the people that have expressed interest in these positions, are: @MikeSonko for CEO of Nairobi Corporation. Sakaja Arthur Johnson for Nairobi Corporation. Ferdinand Waititu, aka H.E. Waititu BabaYao for Kiambu Corporation. And Hon. Zaheer Jhanda for Nyaribari Chache. You scan their resumes and other publicly available information, and here is what you find: @MikeSonko is a self-proclaimed "reformed fraudster" and conman. He once served a prison sentence, which he did not have the discipline to complete, in the coast for fraud. Has no known legitimate educational or professional background. Nothing that says he has even the average skills required to run - which is different from just holding the title of CEO - a company with KSH 40 billion in revenue. He is very flashy, and you can tell he adores cash by just visiting his Instagram account. But you have no idea where his cash comes from, although there are rumours that he may be involved in illicit business dealings. Sakaja Arthur Johnson - appears is born politician. He has never been accused of running anything - including a kiosk. Has never really worked anywhere where he could have learned any skills. But he has sent a diploma with his name from a "TEAM UNIVERSITY" - which, given that nobody has ever heard it, you googled to find out that it is a school in Uganda. That said, you have never seen anyone graduate from that school, and have absolutely no idea about the rigor of its academic programs. In any case - he has ZERO experience outside of politics. In other words - the only thing you are certain about with regards to him, is that he possesses dimples. H.E. Waititu BabaYao is equally enigmatic. You have listened to his interviews on TV, trying to gauge his acumen and competency. He does have a degree certificate from a school in India - but not much is known about his competency, abilities, or experience to run a company with KSH 17 billion in revenue. For Nyaribari Chache, Hon. Zaheer Jhanda wants the job, bad. His resume reads as follows: Educational background: Kenya Methodist University: Currently Seeking a Bachelor or Arts degree, having started in 2020. Outside of this, he has a KCSE certificate from Cardinal Otunga High School (1997). Work experience: BIG. FAT. NOTHING. Now, you have to decide if you are going to hire these people, to run a company with KSH 40 billion in revenues, 17 billion in revenues, and the start-up with annual revenues of KSH 200 million. And to be sure - there are hundreds of applicants for these jobs, with impressive credentials and verified work experience. Are you hiring H.E. Waititu BabaYao @MikeSonko Sakaja Arthur Johnson or Hon. Zaheer Jhanda for these jobs? The scenario I just gave you above is not a figment of my imagination. It is not a functional story am working on. These four people, sought and received positions to lead Nairobi City County Kiambu County Kenya. and Nyaribari Chache MP - on those records. Nairobi City County has a budget north of KSH 40 billion. Kiambu County Kenya. has a budget of KSH 17 billion. Hon. Zaheer Jhanda ran for office without any credentials or work experience, and the good people of Nyaribari Chache elected him. His basic salary is close to 1 million a month. The point is this. When we hire these people for these jobs, we are trusting them with the ability to use their "competency" to make very important decisions for us - about how to allocate very scarce resources. And, there are millions of people, whose dreams and aspirations rise and fall based on the decisions these people make, with those resources. For example, with a KSH 17 billion budget, Kiambu County is not supposed to spend more than 35% of this budget on salaries. If you look at most counties, and look at the number of people employed by the county, it is normally less than 1% of the entire county population. When people leading our government lack the requisite competency, and make dumb decisions, we pay the price. When Kiambu County Kenya. spends 61% of the budget in violation of the law (as opposed to a maximum of 35%), as it does often, this means that the county politicians have effectively diverted over KSH 4.5 billion in that one year, from serving you, to a few people. That KSH 4.5 billion is the difference between having a well-equipped and functioning hospital, and not. A good road, or not. In other words, the competency of people we put into these offices matter, people. It does. The question then is, why are our standards different in politics? If you could not hire these people for CEO positions to play with your own money, why would you elect them to lead jurisdictions with similar level of resources and complexity? That having been said, I digress. Back to Nyaribari Chache. Executive Summary: The audit reports for Nyaribari Chache Constituency’s NGCDF covering financial years 2018-2022 reveal systemic financial mismanagement, misallocation of funds, corruption, and governance failures. The audit findings highlight missing, unaccounted, and wasted funds amounting to Kshs. 292,609,418, affecting the constituency’s service delivery and public trust. Key Findings and Financial Irregularities Missing or Potentially Stolen Funds – Kshs. 79,677,585 1. Unaccounted school bursary disbursements totaling Kshs. 35,542,356 (FY 2018-2019). 2. Overpayments for construction projects exceeding contract values by Kshs. 7,696,229 (FY 2021-2022). Without rationale or support. 3. Unsupported expenditures on security projects of Kshs. 7,000,000 (FY 2021-2022). 4. Bank balance discrepancies, including unreversed stale cheques of Kshs. 2,027,111 (FY 2019-2020). 5. Irregular/illegal procurement of school buses without open tendering, totaling Kshs. 23,349,603 (FY 2018-2019). Wasted or Inefficiently Used Funds – Kshs. 134,136,599 1. Multiple stalled or incomplete school projects, including classroom, laboratory, and dormitory constructions totaling Kshs. 12,500,000 (FY 2021-2022). 2. Unfinished security projects worth Kshs. 34,500,000, with contractors abandoning sites (FY 2021-2022). 3. Procurement mismanagement, including unsupported sports equipment purchases amounting to Kshs. 3,497,000 (FY 2020-2021). Unaccounted or Unsupported Funds – Kshs. 78,795,234 1. Unverified/unsupported allowances and monitoring expenses amounting to Kshs. 8,900,000 (FY 2020-2021). 2. Undocumented expenditure on tuition block construction totaling Kshs. 13,688,879 (FY 2021-2022). 3. Lack of asset register documentation, with total reported assets of Kshs. 30,501,772 (FY 2021-2022). 4. Unreconciled bank balances, including Kshs. 17,291,514 in unpresented cheques that cannot be accounted for (FY 2020-2021). 5. My fellow Kenyans, In the spirit of accountability and civic education, I bring you my analysis of the Nyaribari Chache CDF. My analysis covered 2018-2022. Current MP is Hon. Zaheer Jhanda If you do not know him, please watch the first video attached, and the other pictures. These pictures are from his social media accounts. Please note that, the focus of the review is the CDF itself and not necessarily the politician. That is to say that I don't care when someone was elected. I am looking at the performance of the CDF vs intended purpose. When I do bring up the politician, I am discussing his or her fit for the job. Before we even get to the findings, I do want to ask you for your indulgence a little bit, to discuss something that I believe is related to the findings you will see below. And that is, "intellectual capacity". Or, "competence". Please follow me here. Let us assume that you are a wealthy individual. But you were not born wealthy. You started from below scratch, and now, you own several companies with annual revenues in the billions. One has annual revenues of KSH 17 billion, and let us call it KIAMBU CORPORATION. The other has annual revenues of KSH 40 billion. We will call this one NAIROBI CORPORATION. Finally - you have a start-up - and things are really tight there. You need to make sure the start-up succeeds. You need someone to help steer the start-up through some hard times, ensuring that the company is focused on its core competency, to develop it into a success story. The start-up is young, but has KSH 200 million in revenues annually. And you cannot afford to waste money. We will call the start-up Nyaribari Chache Corporation. You need to hire Chief Executive Officers ("CEOs") for these three companies. Among the people that have expressed interest in these positions, are: @MikeSonko for CEO of Nairobi Corporation. Sakaja Arthur Johnson for Nairobi Corporation. Ferdinand Waititu, aka H.E. Waititu BabaYao for Kiambu Corporation. And Hon. Zaheer Jhanda for Nyaribari Chache. You scan their resumes and other publicly available information, and here is what you find: @MikeSonko is a self-proclaimed "reformed fraudster" and conman. He once served a prison sentence, which he did not have the discipline to complete, in the coast for fraud. Has no known legitimate educational or professional background. Nothing that says he has even the average skills required to run - which is different from just holding the title of CEO - a company with KSH 40 billion in revenue. He is very flashy, and you can tell he adores cash by just visiting his Instagram account. But you have no idea where his cash comes from, although there are rumours that he may be involved in illicit business dealings. Sakaja Arthur Johnson - appears is born politician. He has never been accused of running anything - including a kiosk. Has never really worked anywhere where he could have learned any skills. But he has sent a diploma with his name from a "TEAM UNIVERSITY" - which, given that nobody has ever heard it, you googled to find out that it is a school in Uganda. That said, you have never seen anyone graduate from that school, and have absolutely no idea about the rigor of its academic programs. In any case - he has ZERO experience outside of politics. In other words - the only thing you are certain about with regards to him, is that he possesses dimples. H.E. Waititu BabaYao is equally enigmatic. You have listened to his interviews on TV, trying to gauge his acumen and competency. He does have a degree certificate from a school in India - but not much is known about his competency, abilities, or experience to run a company with KSH 17 billion in revenue. For Nyaribari Chache, Hon. Zaheer Jhanda wants the job, bad. His resume reads as follows: Educational background: Kenya Methodist University: Currently Seeking a Bachelor or Arts degree, having started in 2020. Outside of this, he has a KCSE certificate from Cardinal Otunga High School (1997). Work experience: BIG. FAT. NOTHING. Now, you have to decide if you are going to hire these people, to run a company with KSH 40 billion in revenues, 17 billion in revenues, and the start-up with annual revenues of KSH 200 million. And to be sure - there are hundreds of applicants for these jobs, with impressive credentials and verified work experience. Are you hiring H.E. Waititu BabaYao @MikeSonko Sakaja Arthur Johnson or Hon. Zaheer Jhanda for these jobs? The scenario I just gave you above is not a figment of my imagination. It is not a functional story am working on. These four people, sought and received positions to lead Nairobi City County Kiambu County Kenya. and Nyaribari Chache MP - on those records. Nairobi City County has a budget north of KSH 40 billion. Kiambu County Kenya. has a budget of KSH 17 billion. Hon. Zaheer Jhanda ran for office without any credentials or work experience, and the good people of Nyaribari Chache elected him. His basic salary is close to 1 million a month. The point is this. When we hire these people for these jobs, we are trusting them with the ability to use their "competency" to make very important decisions for us - about how to allocate very scarce resources. And, there are millions of people, whose dreams and aspirations rise and fall based on the decisions these people make, with those resources. For example, with a KSH 17 billion budget, Kiambu County is not supposed to spend more than 35% of this budget on salaries. If you look at most counties, and look at the number of people employed by the county, it is normally less than 1% of the entire county population. When people leading our government lack the requisite competency, and make dumb decisions, we pay the price. When Kiambu County Kenya. spends 61% of the budget in violation of the law (as opposed to a maximum of 35%), as it does often, this means that the county politicians have effectively diverted over KSH 4.5 billion in that one year, from serving you, to a few people. That KSH 4.5 billion is the difference between having a well-equipped and functioning hospital, and not. A good road, or not. In other words, the competency of people we put into these offices matter, people. It does. The question then is, why are our standards different in politics? If you could not hire these people for CEO positions to play with your own money, why would you elect them to lead jurisdictions with similar level of resources and complexity? That having been said, I digress. Back to Nyaribari Chache. Executive Summary: The audit reports for Nyaribari Chache Constituency’s NGCDF covering financial years 2018-2022 reveal systemic financial mismanagement, misallocation of funds, corruption, and governance failures. The audit findings highlight missing, unaccounted, and wasted funds amounting to Kshs. 292,609,418, affecting the constituency’s service delivery and public trust. 𝗣𝗮𝗻𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗮, 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗕𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺 Panorama spent seven months undercover in the Met. We've cut all of that down to 59 seconds: the journalist admitting he saw countless police officers doing an excellent job in the toughest of circumstances. Because that’s the reality. Policing is about extraordinary individuals doing incredible work in impossible situations. The police are the public and the public are the police. They’re not higher beings. They’re people from every walk of life who put in an application for a job. Yes, it’s a job with huge responsibility, but it’s still drawn from the same pool of society as every other workforce. And that means you’ll see the good, the bad, and the ugly reflected within it. The best vetting in the world won’t tell you what someone might say when they’re in a pub with a journalist asking leading questions. Not that that excuses behaviour shown in the programme for one second. What was said was shameful and beneath the standards of any decent human being, let alone a police officer. But every time something like that is aired, it makes the job so much harder for everyone else who still has to walk out the door and put on the uniform the next day. And of course, what you’ll never see is a journalist spending seven months undercover just to show you the good. You won’t see them filming officers comforting victims of domestic violence, or taking a neglected child to McDonald’s because they haven’t eaten in days, or holding the hand of someone dying in a road traffic collision, or knocking on a door at 3am to tell a wife and children that daddy isn’t coming home. You won’t see them filming a van full of officers, young and old, big and small, driving at midnight into the middle of a pub fight, knowing full well they could be hurt but going anyway so that others don’t. That’s the reality of policing. And it’s worth remembering, whatever the headlines, that the vast majority are out there trying to do good in a world that doesn’t often want to see it. Not that that excuses behaviour shown in the programme for one second. What was said was shameful and beneath the standards of any decent human being, let alone a police officer. But every time something like that is aired, it makes the job so much harder for everyone else who still has to walk out the door and put on the uniform the next day. And of course, what you’ll never see is a journalist spending seven months undercover just to show you the good. You won’t see them filming officers comforting victims of domestic violence, or taking a neglected child to McDonald’s because they haven’t eaten in days, or holding the hand of someone dying in a road traffic collision, or knocking on a door at 3am to tell a wife and children that daddy isn’t coming home. You won’t see them filming a van full of officers, young and old, big and small, driving at midnight into the middle of a pub fight, knowing full well they could be hurt but going anyway so that others don’t. They are walking away from the one inheritance that actually compounds, and the cruelest part is that they do not feel the loss as loss. You cannot grieve what you were taught not to want. That is the deepest cut of it. The lie does not only steal the thing. It steals the capacity to know the thing was stolen. A man can spend his whole life on the far side of a door he never knew was a door, mistaking the wall for the edge of the world. Because this beauty is not ordinary beauty. He comes out of a family older than the world, the eternal communion of Father and Son, the love between them so total and so alive that theologians dared to call it a third person. Before there was anything, there was a family. The deepest fact about reality is not a force or a law or a void. It is a household. It is begetting and being begotten, giving and receiving, a Father who is only a Father because there is a Son. So when Jesus speaks of joy made complete, he is not pointing away from family toward something higher. He is pointing toward the very thing he came from, the life he has known from eternity and came to share. His joy is the joy of belonging utterly to a Father and pouring himself out for those he loves. When you marry, when you bring a child into the world, when you wear yourself down in the small unseen labors of a home, you are not stepping outside that divine life. You are stepping into a small image of it. Your family is a created echo of an uncreated one. The love you give your child rhymes with the love the Father has for the Son. The exhaustion, the tenderness, the way a parent would tear the sky open to protect a sleeping infant, all of it is the heavens pressed faintly into flesh, the eternal household leaving its fingerprint on yours. That is why the joy is not merely added to family but completed in it. We were made in the image of a God who is, at his very root, relation and gift and generation. To found a family is to do the most Godlike thing a creature can do, to participate from below in the begetting that God does from all eternity. Your home becomes a window. Through it, dimly and imperfectly, you glimpse the country you came from and are going to. And now a word for the young people reading this, the ones who do not yet have children. I want to tell you what it is like from where I stand. When I am out somewhere, a restaurant, anywhere, and a large family comes through the door, the noise and the chaos and the small bodies of them, something happens in me on two levels at once. The first is joy. A pure gladness at the sight, the way you feel watching something good and alive. But underneath it, almost in the same instant, a sadness reaches up and takes hold of my heart. Because I know now, at my age, after my own years of waiting, that I will never have that. I will never know the particular fruit of a family that large, the fullness of that table, the weight of all those lives gathered under one roof. The door to it has quietly closed, and I felt it close. And I am telling you plainly, because I love you and have no reason to lie to you: you will feel this too. You will. designed to liquidate you. most traders are out here gambling with their rent money while the big players are using automated systems to harvest their liquidations. i know this because i spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on developers for apps thinking i could never code myself. i was getting wrecked by over trading and watching my accounts hit zero while i slept. code became the great equalizer for me because it removed the emotion that was killing my bankroll. i decided to learn to code live so i could iterate to success and now i have fully automated systems trading for me instead of getting liquidated by every wick. i just saw someone lose ten million dollars in a single month because they were trading by hand and got addicted to the screen. you have to understand that to compete with the big banks. they want you to stay stuck in the cycle of emotional trading and leverage because that is how they pay for their hamptons houses. but there is a specific reason why every retail trader is about to become obsolete unless they pivot right now. i am going to show you exactly why your current strategy is a mathematical death trap and how a single jump in technology just changed the game forever every time you sit down at your computer to draw lines on a chart you are entering a gunfight with a toothpick. the institutions have been using high frequency algorithms for decades while you are trying to guess which way the candle is going to move based on a feeling in your gut. it is not a fair fight and it was never intended to be. last year we were looking at models that could barely handle basic logic but now the intelligence has scaled to a point where the machines are finding edges we did not even know existed. there is a ghost in the machine that is pulling out strategies with sharp ratios so high they look like typos. if you do not understand how to harness this power you are essentially donating your capital to the people who already have too code is the great equalizer because it does not care where you came from or what school you went to. i got held back in seventh grade and my teacher told me i would not make it around here. that kind of talk is meant to keep you in your place but the computer does not have a bias. if you can write the logic the system will execute it exactly as told regardless of your background. we are living in a time where a kid in a basement can build a system that rivals a hedge fund because the big tech companies are subsidizing our intelligence. they are spending hundreds of billions of dollars on infrastructure and we are the ones who get to reap the rewards of their competition most people fail in this game because they fall in love with a single idea and refuse to let it go even when it is burning their account to the ground. they spend months or years trying to make one indicator work when the data clearly shows it is trash. you have to drop the ego and realize that your intuition is probably your biggest liability. the secret to winning is iterating to success by testing a hundred ideas until you find the one that actually sticks. i call it the rbi system which stands for research backtest and implement. if you skip any of these steps you are just gambling with extra steps and the house always wins in the end research is where most traders get lazy because they just want a magic bot that prints money while they sleep. they go to youtube and find some guy promising a ninety percent win rate with a rsi crossover. that is not research that is falling for marketing fluff designed to sell you a dream. real research happens when you dive into white papers and study what the quants are actually doing on wall street. you look for market inefficiencies like liquidation clusters and cross exchange discrepancies that are hidden in plain sight. by the time you finish this process you should have a list of ideas that are grounded in reality instead of wishful thinking backtesting is the filter that saves you from losing your life savings on a bad hunch. most people use tools that repaint or give them false confidence because the data is not being handled correctly. if you are using a basic charting platform to see if your strategy works you are likely seeing a version of history that does not exist. you need to use raw python libraries like backtesting py to see the cold hard truth of how your logic would have performed. when you see a drawdown of thirty percent on paper you realize that using ten times leverage would have deleted your account five times over. the math does not lie and it is the only thing that can protect you from your own greed the most dangerous drug in the world is leverage because it makes you feel like a genius right before it makes you a pauper. i have watched two billion dollars get liquidated in a single day because people thought they could predict the bottom with fifty times leverage. the exchanges can see exactly where your liquidation price is and they have every incentive to push the price there to hunt your liquidity. you are playing in a casino where the house can see your cards and they are actively trying to take them from you. the only way to win is to stop playing their game and start using limit orders to save on the fees that are slowly bleeding you dry it is funny how much money people will spend on food and entertainment but they will hesitate to invest in their own education. they will spend a thousand dollars on a weekend out but will not put that same money into learning a skill that could provide for them for the rest of their lives. money is just a tool of exchange and it always replenishes if you are providing value to the world. if you spend your capital on knowledge you are buying back your time and your freedom. i decided to live my life on youtube and build in public because i wanted to show people that a regular guy could do this. now i have fully automated systems trading for me while i sleep and i never have to worry about getting licked by a sudden market move again chasing the greats like jim simons is not about the money it is even if the day was red you have data that tells you why and you can use that to make the system better tomorrow. it is a process of constant improvement and refinement that never really ends. you are See, most machines are broken because the organizations that make them are broken. As an engineer, I would estimate that at least 30% of the parts of any given device exist only to correct for the design flaws in the other 70%. Works like this. Suppose I, an engineer, design a set of pipes and injectors to feed fuel to a combustion chamber at a consistent and controllable rate. Except in testing, there's some corner cases it doesn't handle well. Now, if you're an engineer, you understand this is normal. Nobody ever gets a design right the first time, unless it's so trivial that it's probably been done before. Your first design doesn't survive the wind tunnel, your first code doesn't compile right away, and if does, it segfaults. Your rockets blow up. And there's a flow problem with your fuel feed lines. It happens. Doesn't mean you're stupid. Means you didn't have enough information. But you have an even bigger problem. Middle management. Middle management is a special variety of hazmat suit, which is worn by the finance, sales, or market guys who run companies, so they don't have to touch the icky engineers. C-suite guys hate hate hate engineers, because it's a terrifying sensation to be dependent on someone you cannot understand, who doesn't appear to respect you much. (It does not occur to them that it is also extremely frustrating to have your work paid for, and thus controlled, by someone who cannot understand what you do, who doesn't appear to respect you much.) The primary role of middle management is talk to engineers so C-suite guys won't have to, and the primary qualification is to be a member of the right social class, and to hate engineers. This qualification is dressed up in secret handshake buzzwords like "management experience", as used in the sentence "I know you have been an engineer for twenty years and the other engineers all come to you for advice and leadership, but you don't have management experience, so I am going to hire my golfing buddy's 23 year old kid, who just graduated business school." So the fact that the fuel lines lines are not working quite right isn't your problem. That's part of the normal engineering process. Your problem is that your manager hates you and everything you stand for, and doesn't trust you or take your word for anything. He think his job is to keep you in line rather than help or empower you. So when you say "the fuel feed lines need to be redesigned", he says "we already spent six months and seventeen million dollars design the fuel feed system, we can't let you do it again." He thinks you are telling him seventeen million dollars worth of work needs to be thrown away and redone, and he cannot be told otherwise, because he cannot be told anything. So he says "you have two weeks and fifty thousand dollars to fix it". So you add another turbopump. What else can you do in two weeks? Now there's a new part. And if something goes wrong with that, another new part will be added to fix it. Because the company's actual priority isn't what you are responsible for — the design. It's what middle management is responsible for — the schedule and the budget. You have to play the villain so they can play the hero. What middle management doesn't understand, is paid to not understand, is what engineering actually is. Engineering is the process of making mistakes until you run out of mistakes to make. So when you spend six months and seventeen million dollars, and ended up with a design that doesn't quite work right in all cases, you weren't throwing away money, you were burning through mistakes. You've gotten a lot of them out of the way and won't make them again. But you have to get rid of some more before the design is actually right and doesn't require extra parts. The work of engineering isn't making the thing. It's teaching yourself to make the thing. Once you've done that, you can make the thing with minimal effort and time, because you know how to make the thing. C-suite financiers would hate this idea if they understood it. Why? Because it's unpredictable. Financiers like safe investments that make money. Not knowing how long something will take or how much it will cost is terrifying to them. So they train engineers to lie to them, by hiring a middle managers who try to force them to lie, and just interpret every guess as a promise if engineers still refuse to do so. But lying to yourself doesn't make the truth go away. The truth is that engineering projects take as long as they take, and cost as much as they cost. And that no one knows how long or how much they will be, because no one knows how many mistakes are waiting to be made, until they actually make them. The only thing you thing you can do about this is hire really good engineers, who catch more of their mistakes on the white board, leaving fewer to be caught in the wind tunnel, and this makes engineering faster... but it doesn't make engineering more predictable. Gantt charts are nothing but a collection of lies that corporations have taught themselves to tell themselves, lies that middle managers try to make true by enforcing them as promises. The ultimate reason that machines are 30% unnecessary parts is that the corporations that build them are 30% unnecessary people. This is what's different about Elon Musk. It's not that he's a better engineer. It's that he's a better manager. He understands engineers and engineering, and he doesn't hate them because he is one. He understood all along that green-field design is full of unknown-unknowns, and that there is absolutely no number-crunching, pie-chart, MBA magic that can eliminate this risk... it can only be hidden from view. The critical understanding is in the video clip below, where he says that SpaceX only had a 10% chance of success. You cannot say something like that unless you get it. Well, when you say to yourself, "This project has a 10% chance of succeeding", you've already confronted the pain of those admissions, which means you have already conquered the fear. The fear that makes you try to treat a prediction as a promise. The fear that makes you insert an extra turbopump, when what you really need to do is get busy redesigning the pipes, even though you have no idea how long it will take or much it will cost. Even when your rockets blow up. The SpaceX Raptor engine isn't just, or even primarily, a triumph of engineering smarts. It's a triumph of character. It's about an entire team with virtues MBAs lack: self-awareness, persistence, courage, humility, and, ultimately, hope. Because that's what it takes to pursue the best design, the RIGHT design, not even knowing if it exists to be found, much less whether you'll find it before you run out of money. Great things are not accomplished by middle managers with spreadsheets and Gantt charts. They are accomplished by teams of experts with passion and vision.
