Astrolab is gearing up to send its FLEX lunar rover to the Moon aboard a SpaceX Starship, marking a major step forward in lunar exploration. Roughly the size of an SUV, the rover is built to carry two astronauts while also being capable of remote operation from Earth. This is a giant-ass spaceship that lands on the moon. It's capable of putting 100 tons of payload on the moon, so a lot. We can go way beyond what was done with the Apollo program, where they just had a small lander, and they were on the surface of the moon for some number of hours, and then they got back in and took off. The Apollo program was not capable of building a moon base. But the Starship system is capable of building a moon base. It's designed to be capable of building a city on the moon or Mars. Thanks to some creative unfolding with design and test heritage from our FLEX rover, our stowed CLV-1 measures approximately 2 x 2.3 x 2.2 meters on its journey to the Moon and unfolds after deploying onto the lunar surface. Limbs are deployed into the driving configuration using actuators linked to the suspension assemblies. These also allow the chassis to be raised and lowered to the ground to make it easier for Artemis crews to get in and out. Fully unfolded, the rover sits approximately 4 x 2.3 x 2.6 meters.
