When I first saw this game in the arcade, I thought it was similar to OutRun. But instead of running on a fixed circuit, you follow a straight course, which makes racing really fun. It was only released on the Nintendo 64 in North America, so only NA gamers knew about it. It never came out in Asia, and the region code was different, so there was no way to play it back then. Nowadays, you can run it using EverDrive or code-free mods.

When I heard Daytona USA was coming to the Sega Saturn, I sold all my other consoles and saved up for it. Finally got the Saturn and Daytona running at home—total mind-blow 🤯. Sure, it wasn’t quite arcade-perfect, but just being able to play it at home was enough. By the time Dreamcast came around, the port was almost flawless. Fun fact: Saturn was almost done as a 2D machine, but after seeing PlayStation’s 3D power, Sega tweaked it late—3D performance ended up a bit lacking. Irony is, the same Sega that pioneered 3D with Virtua Racing and Virtua Fighter thought consoles weren’t ready yet.

Ever since I bought an arcade cabinet, I’ve become really interested in arcade games. Similar to console games, you can buy arcade game PCBs and run them by connecting them directly. Capcom games are a bit unique in that they use a six-button layout, so they require a separate connector, but aside from that, the setup is surprisingly simple. You can also play these games through emulators, but the feeling of enjoying them on real hardware is something else entirely. Super Street Fighter II was the first game for Capcom’s arcade system, CPS2, and compared to CPS1, both the graphics and sound were significantly improved.

Right now all i remember is happy i was but i cant remember what made me happy. You know what i mean right? Ppl who dream a lot would probably understand. I dont remember exactly. Just a happy kind of.. but it wasnt like we went to some country or anything, if it's in kr it wasnt like we were in a trip. The theme completely changed. Maybe because i play games a lot it's a scene from a game or i wonder if i just brought the hyungs into a scene from a game. So i think we really had fun there. But getting there wasnt easy. It was scary and frightening but we made it there in the end.

The reason I got into game collecting was the Neo Geo MVS arcade system. Around 2005, I came across an arcade game community where modders gathered—people who converted arcade games so they could be played at home on consoles. While being active in that community for a long time, I started collecting MVS games one by one. Eventually, that expanded into collecting console systems, PC games, and later even full arcade cabinets. I also began collecting Neo Geo AES from that time. Although I collect many kinds of games, the Neo Geo series is especially meaningful to me.

Arcade machines and the game boards inside them are quite old now, so without regular maintenance, they tend to break down more often than you’d expect. Game boards, in particular, weren’t built with durability in mind, so they’re even more prone to failure. (1/2)

Just days before the big step into Y2K, Gran Turismo 2 landed on the PlayStation (December 16, 1999). It was the main reason I bought a PS1 after seeing game at a friend's house. As a faithful PC gamer, racing games of that caliber were pretty much impossible to play on a PC. Everything about Gran Turismo 2 felt great to me: incredible graphics (for its time), cool sound effects (the gear-shift sound lives rent-free in my head), and most importantly, excellent gameplay - especially the option to buy new/better cars by winning races. Modifying and upgrading your car with better suspension, engines, etc. added a fun aspect, and the changes were actually noticable during the race. We still load this up from time to time when old friends come over and we plug in the good old PS1 again.

He told me it was something you could put games on and actually play, and I remember staring at it all day, wondering if something that magical could really be possible. I followed him to a computer academy, and that was the first time I had ever seen a computer in my life. As a reward for bringing me in, he even got a whole box of floppy disks. That was the moment I first stepped into a completely new world. Street Fighter Zero (Alpha) 2 was the most popular entry in the series. Compared to the first game, it had much better balance, and the additional characters made it far more appealing. Personally, I didn’t like Alpha 3 because it felt too complicated. I played it a lot in arcades, but I think I played it the most on the PlayStation 1. Do you like this game?

It was probably the first time I’d ever seen a Super Famicom game with a vocal opening, and it honestly felt groundbreaking back then. I also loved how the combat played out like an action game, and overall it was just a really fun experience. At the time, I never imagined the Tales series would become such a long-running franchise, but seeing new titles still coming out even now is pretty amazing. I’ve only played up to Tales of Destiny. Let me introduce Altered Beast, one of Sega’s classic arcade games. If you’re in your 40s and spent any time in arcades, you’ve probably seen it at least once—more likely many times. When you defeat the white wolf, it drops an orb. When you collect it, you hear the famous “Power up!” voice and the main character starts becoming more muscular. After the third power-up, he finally transforms into a beast, gaining incredible strength. That transformation is really the core of the game. Another fun part is that each stage lets you transform into different beasts like a werewolf, dragon, tiger, or bear. I had a lot of fun playing it in arcades back then. Later it was ported to the Mega Drive and also to the Famicom. But the Famicom version was a bit disappointing compared to what I expected. The transformation animation is one of the highlights of the game, but it’s missing there, so it doesn’t quite capture the same impact as the arcade version.

Back then, Konami was making a lot of belt-scrolling action games using various IPs, and this title was a huge hit. It was also ported to the Nintendo Entertainment System, and the arcade feel was recreated surprisingly well, which made it very popular. Even today, it’s still incredibly fun to play 👌

In Korea, there weren’t any dedicated Neo Geo arcade cabinets, so I didn’t realize until much later that you could actually select from multiple games like this. It feels like this system was designed less for large arcade centers and more for smaller venues that only had one or two machines but wanted to offer a variety of games. Come to think of it, it might actually be a great choice to have at home even today.
