Back in the late 1980s, a friend gave me a single floppy disk as a birthday present. He told me it was something you could put games on and actually play, and I remember staring at it all day, wondering if something that magical could really be possible. I followed him to a computer academy, and that was the first time I had ever seen a computer in my life. As a reward for bringing me in, he even got a whole box of floppy disks. That was the moment I first stepped into a completely new world. And when I saw, just like in the video, games being copied onto a disk, inserted into a computer, and actually running… the shock I felt easily ranks in my top five moments of my life.

I was listening to a sermon recently from one of my favorite teachers, Tim Keller, who sadly passed from this earth earlier this year. He was talking about the power and meaning of the words “Peace On Earth”. I was deeply encouraged and challenged to consider the significance of those words, particularly what they meant when announced by the angels 2000 years ago, and what they mean to us in 2023. As I was reflecting on all of that in light of what’s happening in my life personally with family and friends as well as in the world as a whole, I started thinking about a song I wrote a few years ago with my friend Tom Douglas called “A Desperate Benediction (Peace on Earth)” and suddenly found myself rewriting some of the words of this song, specifically related to right now...Christmas 2023. I’m not even sure as a songwriter what the rules are on this kind of a thing, but I felt strongly that I wanted to share it with you…So here you go. Peace on Earth, Christmas 2023.

Elon Musk: I taught myself to code from a book, then sold my own games to buy better computers. “When I was about 10, I walked into a computer store in South Africa and saw an actual computer. I previously had some early sort of precursors to the Atari system, and then I got the Atari system, which I'm sure a lot of people here have played. But then I saw you could actually have a computer where you could make your own games, and it was a Commodore VIC-20. So that was the first computer I bought. Proudest accomplishment of 2023, I’ll go first. In the world of ultra running- this is not all that special. But in my world it was the full circle of the journey from boy to man. It’s the kind of thing that even as you commit to doing it, even as I laced up my shoes I didn’t know if I was ready. It just seemed so massive and daunting. When I first took up running I was a skinny kid with stick legs that couldn’t run for more than half a mile before I had to stop and walk. But I was so damn inspired to change my life. You can do pretty much anything if you’re too stubborn to stop. 2023 was the biggest year of my life so far in a lot of ways. But these 33 hours will be some of the best of my life til the day I die. No test. No testimony baby. Bring on 2024 🎉🎉🎉

It was Al Pacino's idea to remake the original 1932 version of Scarface. He saw the film and was so inspired by Paul Muni's performance, he wanted to recreate that iconic role in his own way. As he explains: "I had heard about Scarface for a long time because I was working on a play by Bertolt Brecht called Arturo Ui, which was very influenced by the American gangster picture. And I heard, even as a kid, I remember my relatives talking about Scarface and how George Raft flips the half dollar. And so I had heard a lot about it and never saw the picture. So I was one day walking along Sunset Boulevard of all places, and there was the — I believe it's the Tiffany Theatre now — and it was playing in a double bill with something else, I forget, was Scarface. And there was a few of us, so I said, well, why don't we just go and take a look at it? And we went in and it was, you know, an astounding movie, astounding. And the performance of Paul Muni was astounding and inspiring. And I thought after that, that I just wanted to imitate him. I wanted to do something. I was inspired by that performance. And I called Marty Bregman (Al's producer), who then put together some people and they started working on developing this as a film."

Jayson Tatum on his message of gratitude to the team yesterday: “It was one, just being vulnerable, showing my appreciation to the team, of how they have played this season, how they motivated me every single day. The joy and competitive nature that they displayed, I wanted to be a part of that. And I say it all the time, going through rehab and being injured is lonely. It's not intentional. I couldn't practice for a while, I couldn't be in the game. When they were on the court, I was in the weight room, having to do my own thing. So you feel isolated, in a sense. “But I just expressed that being around as much as possible, going to games, being on the plane, really made me feel like I was still very much a part of the team, and how thankful to the group for just being themselves. I was thankful to the coaches that extended their days a lot by helping me during rehab and on the court and pick-up games [for] my conditioning. So I really just kind of telling everybody in the room that they all played a part in essentially helping me get to this moment.”

This man was so powerful and influential as at that time, he was called king of boys, he was so popular and powerful that, if a governor wants to enter into power, they must first consult him, I only heard of his name and fame and have never witnessed the power he carries even though I am this kind of person that never believes in black magic until this faithful day....

I love books, and I'm an avid reader, but I just have a hard time because of the way that I perceive. "I've had a great sort of - one side of me anyways - was really satisfied by art and drawing and sculpture and sort of visual expression. And I think that that started to, you know, was the thing that kind of made me feel un-frustrated. And also the way the system was designed, sort of not to support me when I was in high school at that time. "It was very difficult, you know, there was a lot of, you know, just, difficulty. My English teacher in high school was worried about what my career would be, and I'm like. He would be happy to know that I'm in the Writers Guild of America now. "But, I think that that all those things are, they're all... you can transcend all those things with perseverance and with interest and with with help. And I think that that's an important part of it. "And I just think I've had to adapt, and sort of... I have my own style of the way I write, I write all, you know, but I'm pretty prolific. I was bored one afternoon 5 years ago. Done my client work for the day and was messing around in After Effects. A few hours later this loop was born. I didn't think much of it at first but when I showed it to my wife she was mesmerized. Something changed in me after making this one. I decided to push myself further. To stop doing cute little things on dribbble/IG for likes and to make the stuff I dreamt of doing as a kid. Be an actual animator. Like a lot of artists I come from a world of emotional pain. My childhood was not the easiest to say the least. I lost my brother at a young age and dealt with a lot of shit over the years. I'm forever stuck in a loop of trying to find balance, but at least I'm finally happy with the art I'm making. Oh and I fucking love cats.

I was bored one afternoon 5 years ago. Done my client work for the day and was messing around in After Effects. A few hours later this loop was born. I didn't think much of it at first but when I showed it to my wife she was mesmerized. Something changed in me after making this one. I decided to push myself further. To stop doing cute little things on dribbble/IG for likes and to make the stuff I dreamt of doing as a kid. Be an actual animator. Like a lot of artists I come from a world of emotional pain. My childhood was not the easiest to say the least. I lost my brother at a young age and dealt with a lot of shit over the years. I'm forever stuck in a loop of trying to find balance, but at least I'm finally happy with the art I'm making. Oh and I fucking love cats.

“Because I think a lot of people are familiar with you know, pop stars have these alter egos on stage and then they're also a little bit potentially different behind the scenes. Can you talk about what the difference is between those two personas?” ROSÉ: I think, you know, like I started off as, my whole career started as Blackpink and I feel like it was so much fun creating this character on stage because I'm just from like Australia, like in my bedroom, but like it was so much fun creating this like pop star, like character. It was so much fun. And then I think creating my first solo album, it was my discover of like, you know, who am I? And like when I was naming the album, I really thought a lot about it. There was like options like, you know, number one girl. And then a lot of people did like, what about Rosie? And at first I was like, it seems a bit like narcissistic. I'm not sure. And then it slowly grew on me. And then, you know, just the idea of it being Rosie because Rosé has been such a big part of my life. And that's what we present ourselves as Blackpink, Blackpink Rosé. And I felt like this was very opposite. And so I noticed that it was closer to kind of introducing a different version of me, like because it combined all the stories I would talk about with my friends and family. And they call me Rosie at home. And of course, the online name that the company had made for me from at the beginning of Blackpink, I remember when it happened was like the day before they released my picture, profile picture, they were like, Rosé. And like the name got announced.

Robert Englund on how he was influenced by the performances of Klaus Kinski & James Cagney for his role as Freddy Kruger in "A Nightmare on Elm Street" (1984): "I saw the Klaus Kinski version of "Nosferatu the Vampyre" (1979, Herzog) with Isabelle Adjani, and I was so blown away by his work and I'm a big fan of Klaus Kinski's and so his freedom, his physical freedom in that film also influenced me to be freer and not be afraid to dance a little bit; to dance to Freddy a little bit or, as we say in the theatre, to wear the scenery a little bit. And sort of find my composition because so much of the scenery that Freddy is involved with is larger than life, it's surreal, it's the boiler-room, it's exaggerated, the set is mutating for whatever reasons and so Freddy, to kind of fill that frame, that rectangle, that picture frame, I wanted Freddy to be able to do that and kind of wear that scenery as if he was almost manifesting it himself in the imagination of whichever victim was hallucinating or dreaming it or having a nightmare in that landscape, so to speak. Yeah and that influenced me a lot and I would also use the hat a lot. I liked to use the hat to reveal the bald head - I liked to use the hat as silhouette and shadow and I liked to use the hat to hide behind. I could like literally hide my eyes from the light under the brim, and then at other times I could just barely lift my head and let the light in under the brim to catch my own eyes. So that was really informed part of Freddy, and then I think there was a little bit of Jimmy Cagney in there. There was a kind of a plant your legs wide, almost a little bit of Jimmy Cagney gangster thing. These are all like images that actors used, almost like having a bulletin board with scraps on them and they kind of inform you in your imagination and then they kind of manifest. I don't think anybody watching me would say Klaus Kinski or say Jimmy Cagney or say Bob Fosse or any of those things. But they did inform me a little bit. Because Freddy knows you're dreaming him, so it's almost like he's on stage. Freddy knows you're dreaming him and you're experiencing him as a spectre so I thought he would exploit that a little bit and milk it a little bit, you know."
