There's a reason the Keepers called Korbessa “our little frog”. Whether she’s lounging in the bush or lazing in the mud bath, she likes to sit with her legs splayed out. It’s not a position usually preferred by elephants – but Korbessa is no ordinary elephant! Rescued from a well near Meru National Park in 2023, she arrived tiny but full of character and immediately established herself as Kaluku's undisputed mini-matriarch. We will care for her until she is ready to reclaim her place in the wild – a process that takes upwards of a decade. Korbessa was once one of the tiny trunks. How times have changed. We rescued Korbessa from a well in Meru National Park in August 2023. KWS rangers found her at first light, alone at the bottom. She was so exhausted the vet teams gave her fluids, glucose, and water at the scene, and she slept on a mattress while teams tried to find her herd. When she arrived at our Kaluku Neonate Unit, she became a coveted baby of the herd. Two years on, Korbessa is now Kaluku's mini-matriarch – on the young side for the role, as the Keepers say, but she "unequivocally runs the show." Tiny Wangalla here is the new baby, and so the circle continues. Start following Korbessa's journey today:

Kaikai was a girl on a mission. She slunk away from the mud bath with one thing in mind: more milk. The empty bottles hadn’t escaped her notice and she had clearly been plotting ever since. Her belly was already full, courtesy of the now-empties, but she thought they might just bear a surprise extra serving. Kaikai isn’t quite big enough to hold her own bottle, but she has fully grasped the technique. It was fascinating (and impressive) to watch her problem solve her way through the situation. Not that it stopped her acting like she was the boss – hence the nickname: little Queen. Now, with the arrival of three younger orphaned calves, she’s become a big sister, shepherding them about the bush. Our once-little firecracker is relishing the role, growing more maternal by the day. Adopt our Kaluku big sister and support her journey back to the wild:

Epiya believes that milk should be enjoyed at maximum speed, and who are we to deny her. She andKeeper Walter have come to an agreement! As he remarked, deftly filming-while-feeding, “Epiya loves her bottle without the lid, so I have to adhere to her request.” Now a happy, feisty elephant, Epiya was once a traumatised orphan who we rescued in 2022 after her mother succumbed to the drought. Rafif broke the medicine bottle so she wouldn’t have to take it. Every time she gets sick, giving her medicine becomes a painful struggle— she simply cannot accept it. Today, Rafif broke the medicine bottle, and I was forced to go back to the same place I went to yesterday to find a replacement. Rafif’s condition breaks my heart, and I cannot bear to see her sick and exhausted. Please keep her in your prayers— she truly needs them.

This young lady was fired from her job. Her manager has always given her a hard time and likes to harass her and the other workers, so she gave her a piece of her mind and that’s why she was let go. Now whenever she tries to go and get her final check, the manager gives her the run around, she says it will be there later but refuses to give a time, or she will say it’s at another location. Is the manager retaliating against her now, how else can she get her check, what would you do?

You have to look hard to find the scar. When we rescued Lamuu in January, her front foot was fully encircled by a deep wound left by a snare. Five months on at our Kaluku Neonate Unit, the wound has healed. Even the Keepers who clean it daily say you have to look closely now to see where it was. She remains shy though. The Keepers say the memories of those months alone and the trauma of her injury are still raw, and we are giving her the time she needs to process everything. After all, trust takes time to build. Her elephant friends are helping: her best friend Subi keeps her company and Korbessa, the older mini matriarch, has taken her under her wing.
