"Good evening, Professor. I see you have driven here in your Ferrari." If I had to pick one intro that blew me away more than any other, it has to be the one from Another World. This is as close to perfection as it gets. The pacing, the camera work (gliding through Lester Knight Chaykin's body and then seeing him from behind - pure genius), the subtle sound effects, the tension rising in perfect sync with the music, the way he casually sips a soft drink like a boss while running a particle acceleration experiment - and then gets blasted out of this world into… well, another. Éric Chahi created this game almost entirely by himself. That was 35 years ago now, and anyone who played games back then still remembers it. True greatness.

People (media obviously) have taken Ronaldo’s interview out of context by saying he called the World Cup a 7 game tournament, when that was never true. Piers asked him if he thought winning the World Cup would define his career as one of the greatest and he replied by saying it shouldn’t. Define his career with 14 or 41 years in the game and not by playing 6 games. Of course you people understand, but agenda sells more.

Stop whatever you’re doing. This is simply a must-watch. Please take the 14 minutes to watch this in its entirety. This is the impassioned and powerful monologue by the quite sublime Sharri Markson of Akeem who covers the current tsunami of hate and evil that has plagued the entire world for over a year. Kids are even being used to spout and promote the hate. The depravity and insanity you’ll see footage of in this video is simply shocking. And worst of all, the world’s leaders have allowed it to rage without consequence. Jews around the world have been subjected to the worst wave of hate and antisemitism in modern history, and our world leaders have encouraged it. My heart truly breaks watching Sharri having to call out the most horrific acts of hatred targeted against Jews all over the world. The world is lost😔 We all need true leaders to rise up, take control and put an end to all of this extremism.

Raise your hand if you were a fan of this one. Some games excelled at storytelling with minimal or even no dialogue. Another World comes to mind, but Flashback (Delphine Software, 1992) did it extremely well too. It’s a great game, often mistaken for a sequel to Another World. However, the two are unrelated, and Éric Chahi was not involved. It was created by Paul Cuisset, who had previously worked with Chahi on Future Wars, which may explain the similarities in gameplay and design. Like Another World, Flashback was highly cinematic and story-driven for its era, relying mostly on short animated cutscenes and very brief text-based dialogue. The story unfolded primarily through stunning visuals that still hold up well today. The game was very well received and sold nearly a million copies, a great number for the early 90s. If you were a gamer back then, chances are you played Flashback. I enjoyed it, but it didn’t have quite the same "wow" factor that Another World did when I first played it. Maybe the expectation was unfair, since you naturally cherish the "original" more, I suppose?

Heart of Darkness (Infogrames, 1998) was supervised by Éric Chahi, and you can certainly see the resemblance to the much older Another World. It didn't quite capture me the same way, but maybe that's because it wasn't my peak gaming era anymore. What remained were the rather tough death scenes; pretty full-on for a 1998 game. Considering that the main character is a little boy, combined with how "gory" some of the death scenes were, I am surprised that the game didn't get a lot more "PG only" ratings in certain markets. I know, compared to today's standards it all seems pretty tame, but remember this game is now 27 years old. Also, just like Another World, this one was very tough and you simply had to be patient, learn (by trial and error) and get the timings right.
